Is Art School Only for the Wealthy?, by dreadnatty on Apr 20, 2015 20:21:16 GMT 1, Is Art School Only for the Wealthy?
The Cooper Union, a free institution since 1859, has stirred controversy by announcing a decision to begin charging undergraduates to attend. (Photo: Wikimedia Commons)
If you think that art school might be an affordable option for higher education, think again. College tuitions have hit unprecedented highs across the U.S., Canada, and U.K. And some institutions, like the University of Londonโs Central Saint Martins, are trying to balance the books by cutting foundation courses, yearlong programs that prep prospective students for rigorous full-time study.
At CSM, students have been protesting the schoolโs decision to cut 580 places in the foundation course over the next two years by first occupying the schoolโs lobby, and now marching outside the Royal Courts after CSM took out an injunction against them. (Last week, the Guardianโs Suzanne Moore penned a response.)
CSM isnโt the only high profile art school thatโs made headlines recently for turning a longstanding mission on its head in the face of financial woes. New Yorkโs Cooper Union, originally founded in 1859 as a free institution, has come under fire for its decision in 2013 to begin charging undergraduates to attend. Since then, there have been student protests, investigation by the office of Attorney General Eric. T. Schneiderman, and most recently, the school offered let its current president go.
The concern that art school is fast becoming only accessible to those who can afford it is best evidenced by the staggering tuition costs of many of leading art schools. This is not a problem that belongs to a select few. Below, a sampling of the most recent tuition prices at some top art schools in the U.S. and U.K.:
$53,484 โ Columbia University School of the Arts $47,562 โ University of Southern California $45,810 โ School of the Art Institute of Chicago $45,530 โ Rhode Island School of Design $44,680 โ Parsons The New School for Design $43,400 โ California Institute of the Arts $34,300 โ Yale University School of Art (8,755/22,350 GBP) $13,024/$33,250 โ Slade School of Fine Art, University College London* (9,000/20,000 GBP)$13,389/$29,754 โ Goldsmiths, University of London * (4,280/10,280 GBP) $6,367/$15,293 โ Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London * $23,465.00 โ University of California, Los Angeles
* U.K. schools include tuition for EU residents and non-EU residents
โArt schools are at the forefront of the sustained attack on humanities,โ writes Ms. Moore. โLanguages, humanities, social sciences and particularly arts are subject to huge losses in funding and are expected to do just this: become businesses. This is the only model that our politicians understand.โ
She directly challenges the popular notion that STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) subjects are most financially valuable, arguing that โreal innovation is coming from the crossover between science and arts. Artists visualize what science models.โ

Is Art School Only for the Wealthy?, by South Bound on Apr 20, 2015 21:30:29 GMT 1, I am paying through the nose for my student loans from Art School.
While I am a firm supporter of Art Schools, I am essentially strapped for cash for the foreseeable future and my loans are nowhere near what some others pay.

Is Art School Only for the Wealthy?, by Deleted on Apr 21, 2015 3:03:22 GMT 1, There are certainly inexpensive alternatives. An atelier system is a good way to study under masters for a small fraction of what it costs to attend a private university art program.
It's also worth noting that many of these schools offer generous financial aid packages, so the full sticker price may apply to fewer than half of the students attending.

Is Art School Only for the Wealthy?, by Deleted on Apr 21, 2015 11:40:18 GMT 1, I never went to art school.
What exactly do they do there?
Considering hat art today is in the buy of the beholder
Maybe art school is good for making connections and all that stuff.

I heard they drink red wine and talk deep stuff like "who does the art belong to" and learn strategies how to keep sane in an insane world?
"Art School" is like any other school...you increase your awareness and unless receiving scholarships you end up with bills. Going to "Art School" doesn't make you an artist, much like going to Juilliard doesn't place you in the Philharmonic. I have a number of friends with MFA's that are earning a wonderful living in the art world although maybe not as "artists", of which only a rare few succeed and many are wannabe.

Is Art School Only for the Wealthy?, by Happy Shopper on Apr 21, 2015 13:57:40 GMT 1, In the UK you now pay for all University courses, pretty much the same. Art school or not, you're still paying. But as others have said, you don't pay until you earn over a certain amount, after you finish.
So, all higher education puts you in dept, which is obviously easier for the wealthy pay, but shouldn't stop poorer students any more than a free system would... in theory.
It was free in my day, and I wish it still was !!

Is Art School Only for the Wealthy?, by freezy on Apr 21, 2015 16:31:23 GMT 1, If considering paying a small fortune to go to Pratt or Parsons... One would be better off investigating the options at F.I.T. It's a state school. Even for out of state students, it is a bargain compared to other art programs in NYC. Rutgers in NJ has Mason Gross School as well which is a great art school and more reasonably priced than most. There are ways to do it without owing money for a decade.

I asked the RA if they are a public funded or private funded outfit and they never replied.
