Advice needed: Drymounted print, by cmodart on Aug 26, 2015 3:53:50 GMT 1, I had a pretty hilarious experience recently. Took a flyer and bought a police kids that was dry mounted to foamcore. I paid about $2000 US. I thought I would try to have it conserved and if it were unsuccessful I would just put it in a frame and keep it. I took it to a recommended conservator and it was going to take several weeks. I took it to another guy that had a pretty good reputation, and he said he would work on it. He called me in a week later and said he was having some trouble and I should come by and look. He totally butchered the thing. He was using the heat press to try to make the adhesive let go, And he basically cooked it until the inks browned and the paper was literally singed. ultimately, I had him file an insurance claim and collected about $4500. Was sorry to see the print destroyed....

Always a good idea to take them a less expensive piece first just to test their skills. However, glad this worked out in your favor. Not that yours is, cause I know it's not but think of this, a new inside business opportunity for fraudulent claims on destroyed Banksy prints. Hmmmm. I myself want no part if it. Things that make you go, hmmmm.

Advice needed: Drymounted print, by Andy'77 on Aug 26, 2015 7:31:33 GMT 1, Graham removed a Happy Choppers from dry mount for me and it is now in mint condition. I guess it depends on how it was mounted in the first place. Good luck.

Advice needed: Drymounted print, by londonfx on Aug 26, 2015 9:13:23 GMT 1, Has anyone got any before and after photos? Would be interesting to see the difference.
How does it work if a framer damages your print? Do you allow them to work on your print at your own risk? Or do they have insurance to cover the value of the print?

They aren't trustable as a framer if they just messed up your print. And they sure as hell aren't a conservator now are they. Make them pay for the restorer instead.

Advice needed: Drymounted print, by cmodart on Aug 26, 2015 12:29:37 GMT 1, I think it is important to make sure they understand the value of the print and make sure they have insurance. It absolutely depends on what kind of adhesive was used. There are reversible dry mounting processes, and there are irreversible. Clearly the experience I had was partly due to an irreversible adhesive, and partly due to an incompetent person.
