Banksy HMV Print, by mla on Jun 1, 2017 20:00:44 GMT 1, Does it work like that though?
You're describing a group that has a budget and a group that doesn't. I'd bet on the latter for growth. Well actually, I'd bet on the group that buys original works right now, but they are a subset of the latter group as well.

Both are spenders and art lovers though

Banksy HMV Print, by Deleted on Jun 1, 2017 20:25:41 GMT 1, Ok... If you want any banksy just to own a banksy, go have a good hard look in the mirror. Buy the image not the person.
Do you really think so?
I think we pretty much always buy the person don't we, especially if we are looking to spend over say £1000
I wouldn't buy an image because i like it if it was over £1000 without knowing the person behind it.
Maybe i misunderstood your point?
I read it again, and i think i did misunderstand
xx

Banksy HMV Print, by mla on Jun 1, 2017 20:34:41 GMT 1, You own an unsigned Banksy, correct? You're telling me when you spent the money on that, you weren't buying, to at least some degree, the person behind the image, rather than the image itself?

Banksy HMV Print, by Black Apple Art on Jun 1, 2017 20:50:06 GMT 1, Pointless, pedantic, irrelevant question is it? i am interested in the answer i would have thought they should just by the nature of them being a smaller edition go up more Take a Reaper, edition of 300 against a Flying copper, edition of 750. the reaper should be worth more than the signed Copper, shouldn't it? Reapers are absolutely a rarer piece than many others with both signed and unsigned editions. While it is one of my personal favorites, it still scores close to the bottom of the "wall friendly" scale which ultimately has a big impact of demand and therefore price as well. Look at CWSB, another one of my favs, and with a single signed edition of 82 should be at the very top of the print price scale if price it was based on rarity alone. But it's that "wall friendly factor" that is an important counterpart to the edition size. IMO both CWSB and Grin Reaper both are still undervalued even considering the images. Many just don't want to be reminded of death or the flaws and hypocrisies of their religion, so for at least the time being, these factors keep the prices of such pieces suppressed. I don't think this will always be the case as things progress IMO because after all, it's tackling precisely such subjects that is a big part of what makes Mr B who he is.
P.S. - Just realized this is a sales thread so apologies for straying off course.

Banksy HMV Print, by no walls on Jul 12, 2017 12:41:13 GMT 1, Apologies in advance for such a lengthy sombre post(!) - I just wanted to offer up some advice to anyone in the market to buy a Banksy print.
I’ve already emailed every dealer I can think of, but wanted to post something here as well. Some of you will know this already, but if this prevents just one person getting conned, it’s worth the post.
Firstly and most importantly, I can’t emphasise enough the importance of checking with Pest Control before buying a Banksy print. There is no doubt that there are stolen Banksy prints out there in the market, with certificates to accompany them. Without checking with Pest Control before buying something, there is a chance that you’ll end up buying a stolen print. I’ve always found Pest Control to be helpful and no doubt they’ve saved no end of people from falling into the trap of buying stolen prints over the years. All it takes is one quick email to them.
To fill you in - when I was still running No Walls, we had a Banksy HMV (529 of 600) fraudulently purchased from us. We lost the print and were stung by Amex (this is another story) with having to refund the person whose card had been fraudulently used. At the time we’d just paid for and launched an expensive new website and couldn’t afford to lose the print, let alone the chargeback. It was an absolute killer.
The print was immediately registered with Pest Control, the Police and Action Fraud as being stolen. I then came across a story in the press about the exact same thing happening to another dealer and spoke with the police force concerned, in the hope that they may have recovered this print, but to no avail. I then figured that was it, never to be seen again and put it out of my mind.
It’s only now that I’ve discovered the extent to which this has happened and this has prompted me to post this. From what I understand, several dealers have been hit with the same crime, some for vast amounts of money and there must be multiple stolen prints, along with this one, floating around in the market.
Thanks to my HMV print being reported to Pest Control as being stolen, it has surfaced again and I’m in contact over email with the person who has it. I don’t know much about them, or what will happen from here, but for all I know they may now disappear. I just wanted to post this as now, knowing that it has been stolen, there is every chance that they try to offload this print on the cheap to one of you unsuspectingly.
If anyone is offered this particular print, feel free to let me know. My email is james@114churchstreet.com.
Thanks for reading.
All the best,
James

Banksy HMV Print, by Balboa on Jul 12, 2017 14:03:00 GMT 1, Two or three years ago I bought a signed Toxic Mary privately. Pest Control gave it the all clear and then two or three months later contacted me to say it had been purchased from a gallery using a stolen credit card.
Ultimately I had a worthless print until the gallery settled with their insurance, which took some months. After they had done this and contacted Pest Control to say as much, Pest Control released the block on the print and officially recognised me as the legitimate owner.
It was a stressful time though.

Is the lesson here to check with PC that the person you're buying from is the registered owner? I'm guessing whoever steals prints just sells them quickly without registering in their own name.

Banksy HMV Print, by Poster Bob on Jul 12, 2017 14:20:00 GMT 1, Since Pest Control don't handle change of ownership quickly people don't register prints. In order to avoid fraud Pest Control don't want to deal with multiple changes of ownerhsip on the same print in a short period of time.

Banksy HMV Print, by no walls on Jul 13, 2017 13:37:48 GMT 1, From talking to people these last couple of days, I'm surprised how many galleries and dealers this has happened to. I had no idea.
I'd just say to do as many checks as you can. Definitely check the registered owners name with Pest Control - if the person you're buying from isn't the same name as the registered owner, that should ring alarm bells. If that is the case, ask more questions. There's no reason why someone wouldn't go to the effort of registering a print in their name. All it takes is an email or two and it's done.
I'd also say to anyone that if this happens to you, report it to Pest Control straight away. If a print has already been registered as stolen with them, I'm sure they'd say. Maybe the gallery you mention didn't report it straight away Balboa? Good to hear you got it sorted in the end though.

Banksy HMV Print, by Poster Bob on Jul 13, 2017 14:01:01 GMT 1, Pest Control frequently takes up to a year to change ownership. Prints frequently change hands in less time than that so people often don't bother.

Banksy HMV Print, by Deleted on Jul 13, 2017 14:57:08 GMT 1, I have a print I've not registered.. maybe I should! depends on if you want to sell it or not. There will be plenty owners out there without COA's and with prints not registered in their own name, infact probably not registered in anyone's name !
If you intend to sell then it'd add a bit more assurance to potential buyers if it was registered in your name.

I know this has been discussed extensively elsewhere, but I would get all prints registered as soon as possible. In the case of duplicate edition numbers (both being deemed genuine), I would much rather have the one that doesn't have the 'dn' penciled in...just my opinion.

No issues with that and probably prudent thing to do but if you'd bought a print direct from source back in the day, no COA, not registered in your name, no intentions of selling, why bother ?

Banksy HMV Print, by dwight on Jul 13, 2017 17:01:53 GMT 1, It is possible, especially with older prints, that there has already been a duplicate numbered print registered. Therefore, your print (from the original edition and purchased directly from pow) could end up being the 'dn' notated print even though the other print was the one that got out the door and registered.

Therefore, your print (from the original edition and purchased directly from pow) could end up being the 'dn' notated print even though the other print was the one that got out the door and registered. In that case I'd be better off leaving my print on my wall numbered as it is without the DN.

Banksy HMV Print, by Deleted on Jul 13, 2017 17:14:46 GMT 1, Ultimately, its up to you, but that would be my reason for getting it registered. It helps POW keep track of prints which benefits owners. POW did such a good job of keeping track of prints that some have to get DN on them and they lost the job to PC.
That's a small joke on my part.

Banksy HMV Print, by Poster Bob on Jul 14, 2017 0:32:44 GMT 1, Since Pest Control don't handle change of ownership quickly people don't register prints. In order to avoid fraud Pest Control don't want to deal with multiple changes of ownerhsip on the same print in a short period of time. Pest Control have always handled change of ownership extremely quickly for me. Good for you. I know people who have been waiting for two years and have had subsequent emails ignored. I think that makes not bothering understandable.

Banksy HMV Print, by Born Again on Jul 14, 2017 2:28:25 GMT 1, Thanks for all the info. I don’t, unfortunately, own a Banksy but never knew you had to do all this. Will keep it in mind for future reference (when I steal one)

Banksy HMV Print, by securityman on Jul 14, 2017 8:02:10 GMT 1, I know this has been discussed extensively elsewhere, but I would get all prints registered as soon as possible.
In case pest control stops issuing COAs and my kids, kids cannot sell it all.

Jeez ... been waiting 7 months so far for my change of ownership to go through ... guess i'll have to be a bit more patient
