Donald Trump, by Deleted on Nov 10, 2016 15:26:11 GMT 1, Hilary got the majority of votes It's funny because the electoral system was intended to prevent a bad candidate from becoming president. It's ridiculous and outdated and annoys me because I'm essentially only voting for who wins my state, not the election. My state Clinton won and my vote was all for nothing because the popular vote doesn't matter. Which is also a huge reason many people don't vote, I knew Trump had no chance in my state. After this and Gore losing the electoral vote versus Bush who I'm sure all agree was a disaster maybe they'll take a more serious look at that. I get your arguments but on the other hand, why would someone from the smaller (poorer) states even go and vote when their economic and social situation is only 'worth' a fraction of the situation of that of someone from Cali or NY in the total election numbers?
Could anyone suggest a solid read that isn't extreme left- or rightwinged but offers a clear view on the pros and cons of the system of having an electoral college?

Donald Trump, by cornholio on Nov 10, 2016 16:52:32 GMT 1, With income inequality increasing lots of people feel betrayed by the system. Why thay think they will be saved by a billionaire who is proud of not paying the taxes, I don't know. But under Obama income inequality has gotten even worse. Why anyone could think Hillary will fix it when Obama didn't is crazy. But maybe Hillary should have paid more attention to blue collar and middle class workers and less attention to special interest groups?

Donald Trump, by cornholio on Nov 10, 2016 17:11:11 GMT 1, This ^ is absolutely disgusting garbage. An elitist who assumes moral authority and spews out vitriolic opinion as if it were beyond question. A rebuke of this kind of stuff is exactly what this election was about. Elitists who write columns for the New Yorker may be book smart but are completely devoid of the capacity to understand philosophical differences between classes and religious people. They believe their opinion is paramount. And their inability to comprehend opposing viewpoints means simply deride it as the opinion of racists and sexists or some other kind of ism or ist.
So smart yet so stupid to see how insulting this is and how dumb it is to make blanket assumptions about others.
If you looked at every media article for the past 6 months, there was never one real serious hint that she would lose. A couple of weeks ago she and the media were so puffed full of air they started to threaten the traditionally conservative states as being potential flips. If you google 'Clinton Goldwater Landslide' you get 75 thousand hits. That's how sure they were that they were not only going to win but thought they would do it in landslide fashion. ... And yet Hillary lost almost every single battleground state. This doesn't show just how out of touch Hillary was but how out of touch the media was.

Trump has made all these horrible racist, sexist, stupid statements, and been supported publicly by some very dubious people, yet still people voted for him! Change was maybe needed/wanted, but not THIS change. The masses have been duped by a con man.

Donald Trump, by cornholio on Nov 10, 2016 18:55:16 GMT 1, What this article is saying though is still true... Trump has made all these horrible racist, sexist, stupid statements Is that not your opinion but a fact? Who makes you the arbiter of such decisions?
yet still people voted for him! Yes people did, in fact about 30% of Latinos did and 13% of black males did. Not what you'd think based on what the media was telling us. www.cnn.com/election/results/exit-polls
The masses have been duped by a con man. Nobody has been duped, everyone is acutely aware of his faults. He still provides a kind of alternative that we may have never seen before. If he doesn't deliver he will be gone in 4 years.
And I repeat - I am no conservative. If we were to go down a list of issues I'm going to side on the liberal side at least 80% of the time. I voted for Bill Clinton and I used to attend leftist political rallies. Some of the things on Trump's agenda I am completely and absolutely 100% opposed to.
But then again I am disgusted by the holier than though - I'm right you're wrong - attitude being pushed by the left. As if they must have Clinton. They are the deciders of who is allowed to be president. I can only imagine what the media would be saying if Clinton were elected and conservatives took to the streets en masse protests. Going to DNC rallies and assaulting people. The lack of tolerance for opposing opinions from the "tolerant" left is horrific.

Pretty sure that's a fact and not just opinion. He has said some terrible things, and on camera. Of course morality is an ever moving thing, so perhaps it's acceptable for politicians to say those things about Mexicans and Women!?
It's a also a fact though that people want change and see him as their last hope. And that's the saddest thing, which is what I think that journalist is saying. There should be a better alternative than Trump.

Do you imagine Trump will become a wealthier person now he is president or do you think he will do the right think for the country and close the loop holes he has exploited.

I can't quite understand how you can support someone with zero experience, mocks disabled people, saying 'black lives matter' is trouble, sexist, wants to block all Muslims entering, build walls, and DOES NOT BELIEVE IN CLIMATE CHANGE, wants closer ties with putin, should be made the most powerful man in the world, is quite worrying.
Neither was the best candidate, but the worst certainly won (and polled fewer actual votes).
Do you support the various views espoused? Or think it's 'political correctness gone mad'? Ok to impersonate disabled people and want to deport 11 million? And leave 20 million without healthcare? Grope women using power and stature? Defensible for anyone?

As a rightist, do you like being lumped in with supremacists, fascists, etc. I'm sure not. So perhaps tone down the rhetoric when referring to left wing people eh?

Donald Trump, by Daniel Silk on Nov 11, 2016 1:13:00 GMT 1, Watching the news on TVs and it's the same as after Brexit, with the media and people in power who thought they knew everything suddenly realise, or actually still not realise how out of touch with the majority public opinion they are. Hilary got the majority of votes Yeah, same problem in the UK when Labour got in, while Conservatives got more votes.
The voting system just doesn't represent the people well.

Donald Trump, by Daniel Silk on Nov 11, 2016 1:23:14 GMT 1, I think Hilary represented beliefs of what parts of America wanted to be, while Trump represents more of the reality of beliefs that America actually is, and that's how he won.
Hilary tried to be everything to everyone, and I just don't think that style of politician succeeds in today's media world.
Same as in the UK and the Brexit vote, with remain painting a picture of what they wanted the beliefs of people to be, rather than representing a true reflection of people's opinions.

Donald Trump, by Daniel Silk on Nov 11, 2016 1:24:20 GMT 1, Yeah, same problem in the UK when Labour got in, while Conservatives got more votes. The voting system just doesn't represent the people well. It actually does. Otherwise a handful of large cities would decide everything. Yeah true it's a tricky one, and I don't know if it can be solved.

Same as in the UK and the Brexit vote, with remain painting a picture of what they wanted the beliefs of people to be, rather than representing a true reflection of people's opinions. While that may be true to some extent, I think in the end it was choosing the lesser of two evils (which were extremely close to each other) and the majority of the people just didn't believe Hillary was trustworthy. Additionally, the media here in America primarily CNN and most other networks bit it all hook, line and sinker. Pretty much all the media portrayed Hillary as the favorite. I have never seen so many people out of touch with having their finger on the pulse of this country. It was very obvious here in California, but this is such a liberal and different state so I understand that we don't represent the rest of the nation and truly are a minority in our beliefs and views. It seems that as a nation we are very separated by anger and we need to get a handle on that and come together on some level otherwise we will sink ourselves. I myself am tired of career politicians running this country. Although I did not see either candidate as being a viable choice for the job of running this country and did not vote myself, I am glad to see that democracy still is alive and well here in America. I am hoping for the best in the next four years.

Donald Trump, by Coach on Nov 11, 2016 9:33:15 GMT 1, With all due respect to my American friends on here, I do find it both irritating and conceited when your fellow Americans refer to your president as "the leader of the free world". He's the leader of America. And what is meant by "the free world"? It used to mean non communist countries during the Cold War. What does it mean now? And assuming that the uk is part of this free world, I can assure all Americans that I don't consider trump my leader.
