Eelus print contest - "Baby Shot Me Down", by kaotek on Feb 24, 2016 1:51:02 GMT 1, Great contest idea, and some amazing collections posted. Only have been collecting a short time, but Eelus is definitely one of my favorite artists. Here is a pic of most of my pieces minus 2 snub nose invites I forgot to add. Recently got the approval from the better half to put all of them up in the room we are currently working on so these will be off to the framers soon.

Eelus print contest - "Baby Shot Me Down", by Ken Hashimoto on Feb 24, 2016 3:43:43 GMT 1, With all due respect to the owner, who I hope is very happy, does this type of framing not alter the artwork, by changing the composition of the piece in a way unintended by the artist? This type of framing is shown on here from time to time, and I think the same thing each time. If an artist self frames a piece and does something like this, then clearly the frame is intended to form part of the artwork itself, but not when a framer does it. Personally I tend to be of the opinion that a frame should be to display the art, not to become part of it. While I agree with you, I think if I were the artist, I'd just be happy knowing it's framed and on someone's wall as opposed to flat filed, or worse, tubed. Agreed. Aesthetic opinions can vary greatly, and who's to say what's right or what's wrong? If the collector is psyched, that's the most important thing. I'd assume that most artists would be happy to see someone so passionate about displaying the work.
On a bit of a side note, I know a lot of museums with Barry McGee works on paper are having a serious dilemma on this subject as Barry tends to use found frames, which usually don't contain archival materials. Re-framing these works can be important for conservation, but against the artist's intent. Dilemma!

Eelus print contest - "Baby Shot Me Down", by reef on Feb 24, 2016 5:05:04 GMT 1, I know my opinion on here probably doesn't matter as I am new to the forum as well as collecting art, but i find this competition fairly interesting. The point of this was to take prints from flippers (resellers) and give an opportunity to people who will enjoy the art and not profit on it. I feel like there are more prints in folders in this tread than there are on walls. For the people who have prints years old that are in folder is this because your framing list is so long it goes years back or is it because most of these prints are valuable (ATR, ect) and you are holding onto them because of their value and not to frame them. If it is for collector purposes and as an investment to eventually resell i feel as though all those should be excluded from this contest. I missed out on this print and would definitely frame it and put it on my wall. Every print i have purchased is on my wall except my two kunstrasens which are recent that i haven't had time to take to the framers. I find it to be a shame that these may be given to people who are going to put them in a folder, or even buy them at cost to put them in a folder, just hoping to make a profit in the future. And if that is not anyones intension I hope i didn't offend you. Like I said I'm new here and just seems to be what I see, not what I know. If I am completely off, please correct me and explain to me how this works. thanks, reef

Reef, I can't speak for any of the members that posted framed along with pieces in folders. However, as a Miss Bugs fan, I have over 25 pieces of their work. More than half are framed. I've had many more. I've sold a few, I've traded a few. I plan to frame more of them in the near future. Point being...it doesn't make me less of a fan because I do not have every MB piece I own framed. I could say the same thing about my Charming Baker collection....

I think that is a fair observation by a new member and s conclusion that people would naturally come to but the reality is (speaking for myself and some others who I've 'got to know' is that we buy far too much art we like and not enough walls to put them on!!
There is no doubt a folio priority list and when a new piece comes along, it will sometimes push a former favourite down the list! The cost of (professional) framing is also a factor of course and tend to be selective of which pieces warrant this expense. Some lower value work I just love will sometimes go in an off the shelf frame just to get on the wall.
The other reason for portfolios of prints, is as you state, keeping them in the best condition - why wouldn't you after spending various amounts of hard earned cash!! It's always preferred (relaxes the paper fibres and more space efficient) than having 100's of tubes stacked up! We'd all love to keep everything we buy but the reality is that some greater will always come along and if you don't have an endless amount of cash, then funding it through your collection is n obvious route. Let's not kid ourselves, everything has a value and as humans (not all!) we always want more, betterment to some degree.....
Work should be for the wall and not the folder but as outlined above, it's just not always practical!! So on that note, the competition should be open to all...only the individual knows whether they are a true art lover or just trying to make quick cash and on here (and sometimes the 'bay), they are shown for what they are very quickly!
Right, time for breakfast

Eelus print contest - "Baby Shot Me Down", by chads007 on Feb 24, 2016 10:11:23 GMT 1, I agree with your general sentiments reef. I don't own a folio as I don't buy prints every week or month due to limited space / cash (or rarely prints anyway only originals), and have limited wall space. Everything that gets bought goes straight to mfm (he has 4-5 bits at the moment), or framed imminently. I can understand why people have folios, financially (can't afford to frame straight away or waiting to resell), or otherwise.

Really wish I recognised this quote. It's brilliant, but sadly I have to concede ignorance. To find out who said it, I'd need to cheat by doing a Google search โ and that would be unsportsmanlike.
Anyone else here know?
Now my turn with a different quote. It's also beautifully inane, although perhaps more well-known. 20 points to the first person who identifies the author. And no Googling allowed:
"I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some, uh, people out there in our nation don't have maps and, uh, I believe that our education like such as in South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, or, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future [for our children]."

Eelus print contest - "Baby Shot Me Down", by lifeonwalls on Feb 24, 2016 16:11:19 GMT 1, Collections stashed away in sleeves shouldn't eligible for this type of contest.
One (one!) framed and on the wall is better than 10 stashed away in sleeves.
I get wanting to have a bunch of one artists work (I was the same way with Keyes but thankfully grew out of the phase). I also understand the "well I get to enjoy the 25+ prints I have from one artist whenever I want to by opening up the portfolio" argument as well. But that isn't the same as passing something in the hallway each day that brightens your mood. A split second is all it takes on your way out the door or an image that welcomes you home. That feeling is impossible to get with something stashed away hidden from view - full stop. Art should be enjoyed effortlessly standing in front of it, not by flipping through it page by page.
And for disclosure, I do have an EINSBAW on the wall, I can't upload the image but here's a link for those curious. flic.kr/p/bXchLt

Eelus print contest - "Baby Shot Me Down", by Deleted on Feb 24, 2016 16:17:52 GMT 1, Haha, it was Ms. Nebraska or Tennessee, maybe South Carolina. I can't remember without googling. A total deer in headlights moment for her.

Eelus print contest - "Baby Shot Me Down", by dreadnatty on Feb 24, 2016 16:30:54 GMT 1, Fantastic, and great idea for a new game. Really wish I recognised this quote. It's brilliant, but sadly I have to concede ignorance. To find out who said it, I'd need to cheat by doing a Google search โ and that would be unsportsmanlike. Anyone else here know? Now my turn with a different quote. It's also beautiful inane, although perhaps more well-known. 20 points to the first person who identifies the author. And no Googling allowed: "I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some, uh, people out there in our nation don't have maps and, uh, I believe that our education like such as in South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, or, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future [for our children]."Sounds like Bush Jr to me. No way thats W

Eelus print contest - "Baby Shot Me Down", by met on Feb 24, 2016 16:33:19 GMT 1, Haha, it was Ms. Nebraska or Tennessee, maybe South Carolina. I can't remember without googling. A total deer in headlights moment for her. Close enough. You win. It was Miss South Carolina Teen USA 2007.
In fairness, she was only 18, and it wasn't an easy question to respond to off-the-cuff in front of cameras and a live audience.
EDIT: Video added

Eelus print contest - "Baby Shot Me Down", by kaotek on Feb 24, 2016 16:34:14 GMT 1, I know my opinion on here probably doesn't matter as I am new to the forum as well as collecting art, but i find this competition fairly interesting.
As I am fairly new to collecting (less than a year) I am constantly learning. Initially I was taking the prints to be framed as soon as they arrived. At the time I was selecting frames and matting for each piece individually. This led to having different looks to each piece. I've since learned that I prefer a more consistent look for work that is in the same room or area. My local framer doesn't keep records of each piece they have framed, so I found it easier to have them flatten out for a bit, then take all of the pieces in that will displayed together. It helps to keep a consistent look without the headaches of trying to determine if I'm selecting the right shade of black for the matting etc.

Eelus print contest - "Baby Shot Me Down", by t3c on Feb 25, 2016 12:06:06 GMT 1, I've got 7 up on the walls, Eelus is probably the artist i have the most work of. Will get the pics posted but some of them are on not so friendly wall spaces so reflection and angles have proved tricky..

Eelus print contest - "Baby Shot Me Down", by pokodogo on Feb 25, 2016 16:29:10 GMT 1, This is a great gesture Ken, and I wish other artist galleries would follow suit. It may cushion the 4 true Eelus collectors who it pains to see his worked flipped immediately after release.
After missing out on the drop last Friday, Heres my collection, with a bit of a story....
I got these for our twin girls (10 months old now), so when they are older (leave home) then they can decide between them who has which on their walls ... I was wanting a NEIABW but If I got the 'Baby Shot Me Down' then a happy Dad would have his own Eelus! (sorry to anyone who has seen these pics before)!
Thanks again & Good Luck to all Eelus collectors.
