Eelus 3D Lenticular "Not Everything Is So Black & White", by Hairbland on Apr 4, 2016 13:03:59 GMT 1, As with pretty much all lenticular ( or as it has often been referred to in the States as vari-view, after the VariView company that invented it in the 1930's), it has a charming novelty look. VariView coined the name "lenticular" to describe their liner images, "Winkies" to describe their popular blinking eyes, and "Magic-Motion" to describe any lenticular image containing motion. Quite the craze in the 40's and 50's, from campaign buttons to prizes in Cracker Jack. While I tend to agree with Coach as to the twee aspect the original seems cherished and valuable. It seems like the "umbrella" is another trope, that was my thought when this release was first available. Yes, Renoir did it early, as did Magritte...and the father of much of this Banksy turned it inside out. The Beatles made it amusing in the Eleanor Rigby scene from Yellow Submarine. An umbrella put Rhianna on the map. Allowing for Eelus to utilize said trope, one would hope any aspiring urban artist would put the umbrella away. Just a thought for conversation. Just a thought for conversation? Do you you know the meaning of the word "trope" and if so how are the artists that you have quoted linked? Why not throw in a few more random works that feature umbrellas! In what way is Eelus utilising "said trope"? More conversation. I'll help you out with this on a few levels...
1 - asking me if I know the meaning of the word "trope" is condescending, and would serve to impact conversation in a negative way. As with many words, it has multiple meanings, for this conversation we'll go with the easily found definition "a common or overused device". For me a recent example would be the conversation my gf and I had while watching Daredevil on Netflix, how the familiar tropes of comic books have been made interesting by the quality of the writing on this show.
2 - my use of Magritte, or Renior, has meaning within the context of past threads on this forum, where fans of the new (for example, maybe, Martin Whatson) as their defense throw out comments like "Well, Warhol did that too", or "what about Picasso?", as if one could include someone barely established within an art history conversation. Further breaking down my context, what with there being Beatles fans on this board the wonderful scene depicting a wonderful song from an interesting movie would warm the souls of those interested in the conversation - trying to make a point on this site by attacking is rude and tends to shut down dialogue. Hence the comical bonus of mentioning Rhianna, which of course has nothing to do with the conversation.
3 - in the case of the umbrella (or grenade, butterfly, police shield, painting on magazine covers or classic art images) once it has been done and has received acclaim any artist should give serious thought to including said "trope" in their work. Banksy did it in 2008, Eelus in 2010. One could claim that with Eelus it was not yet established as a trope so a reinterpretation could be in order.
Here is a scholarly discussion on NOLA, I thought it interesting: scholarworks.uno.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1005&context=awards
And here are 2 things on Not Everything...appears Eelus did face some criticism but says he had his idea before Banksy, and the ArtNet site I posted as it gives a bit of an artist statement as to what he is bringing to the art table: iamdevbo.wordpress.com/2010/08/12/not-everything-is-so-black-and-white/ www.artnet.com/auctions/artists/eelus/not-everything-is-so-black-white
4 - finally, there has been much written about "Multiple Discovery", or artists (scientists, musicians, etc) having the same idea at the same time. The most recent example I know of is two DJs from different parts of the world coming up with relevant new versions of Tracy Chapman's "Fast Cars", seemingly oblivious to the other. For me, as an art fan I would give Eelus the benefit of the doubt, as Banksy deals in surprise...although 2 years is a bit of time. Being respectful of this board and its members, I personally have no issues with the Eelus piece as I imagine it would look great framed in a room and I think if you add his piece to the Banksy piece then ANY "Artist" utilizing umbrellas within their work would be ill-advised, or need to completely reinvent the wheel.
Recent examples of using tropes as to new artists posting here would be Tabby and Dr Artistic, both of whom might be talented artists but need to find their own way. There are some lovely driftwood paintings which make me think of Barry McGee. Further searches on your part will discover these "tropes". Start with googling "graffiti grenade".
Hope this helps!

If anyone wondered about the appeal of this "re-hashed" version, I guess that is your answer! I expect this will have a similar value to the "original" print edition - which I suspect we will mean we see a few more of these pop up for sale when they land in people lap`s. (Still if anyone is looking to sell)

(Still if anyone is looking to sell) aye it would appear so. I get the fact it's not everyone's cup of tea (format/image wise) but then again you can say that for pretty much anything any artist has done imo. This image was a grail piece for me as mentioned many times on this board so i'm glad i can tick it off the my top 3 wants for 2016. A Harring & a Banksy come next hopefully this year
I hope you manage to get one fella at a reasonable price, good luck with your search

Taking the sale off eBay when this high to avoid fees not uncommon. Not easy, as they try to nix any attempt at sharing email, but allows often for in person sale, no shipping, paypal gift etc.

Eelus 3D Lenticular "Not Everything Is So Black & White", by Goooogle Male on Apr 5, 2016 16:12:00 GMT 1, I got a colour variant from the AR in person sale (was a bit of a bun fight in the shop - there were no pre-orders or guarantees whatsoever, just arrived and thrust credit card at counter and got lucky with the last one available). There were 6 of each type (the shop ones) and they were all framed and sold at ยฃ1250 each.
I've tried really hard to get good photos/video but doesn't show it off nearly well enough - i'll keep trying but you HAVE to see it in the flesh to see how it pops. Even just looking at it straight on (withuot the 'moving' effect, the 3D works exceptionally well and no 1980's ruler type stripes. The 3D/colour move is also graduated rather than just jumping from 1 image to another like old skool lenticulars. it is a great piece and after a few days I'm really happy I took the plunge.
I have the full set (NEISB&W, ATR, WTNFU) and this is a great accompaniment to them but very distinct from NEISB&W print in its own right - not least because it is substantially smaller, and the colouration is so different. I defo wouldn't see it as a replacement.
Was also really cool to see Eelus and Eine together having a right old chin wag and more than a few beers. Spoke to Eine for a little while - he's now fully based back in the UK for anyone who might be interested.
2 not great phone pics from the night -

Its a nice thin black metal frame. No glass (none needed - I think having glass - even museum - would really detract). Works really well - adds another touch of depth to the image without drawing your eye away all. EDIT - IT HAS GLASS!
Not sure a trad wooden frame would work at all with this one - god knows how you'd attach it either as the lenticular is quite thick - defo not a 'print'.

Isn't it possible on eBay to make up/change the location? So, it really proves nothing having an eBay seller saying where they live. It does though take someone quite special to whack a print they don't have in hand from some obscure place like Llandowbrevy without changing the location first.

Eelus 3D Lenticular "Not Everything Is So Black & White", by cyberkid on Apr 5, 2016 17:15:36 GMT 1, The framing by AR looks pretty simple suppose it doesn't detract from the image in any way. I'm awaiting their call to discuss possible framing options , not heard anything since the drop. Wonder when they will get them shipped? Its a nice thin black metal frame. No glass (none needed - I think having glass - even museum - would really detract). Works really well - adds another touch of depth to the image without drawing your eye away all. Not sure a trad wooden frame would work at all with this one - god knows how you'd attach it either as the lenticular is quite thick - defo not a 'print'. without glass ? hmmm....whats about protecting this lenticular media against sunlight ??

Looking again there might be a UV perspex layer over the lenticular. I never saw one unframed so its hard to tell (the framing is very neat and flush to the lenticular).

But i wouldnt call that framed. Shame mr frameman couldnt be used buy them at source but then i guess that would eat into their profits.

Stood here with it in front of me the framing is absolutely perfect. It just needs a very thin border, nothing else - they've thought it out really well. I use MFM nearly all the time but for this one i'm very happy with the AR framing indeed.
