Eelus 3D Lenticular "Not Everything Is So Black & White", by d.r. perseus on Mar 25, 2016 5:26:05 GMT 1, Bollocks! Eelus didn't sign a contract with anyone who purchased the first print release. Seems the true fans would be overjoyed with the lenticular release! Seems from the above Instagram post, that Miss Bugs are about to release another edition of Mother. I own the original orange on paper. I'm not upset about it. I'm wanting the new Mother! Doesn't matter to me if the new edition makes my Mother less valuable on the secondary market. Because she isn't going anywhere! Obvioussly Eelus didn't sign a contract, or there would be recourse, but that doesn't change the fact that many fans will be upset by this release. You seem to be confusing your own lack of interest in what art is worth with what you expect from everyone else. Unfortunately thousands of years of art disagree with you that price doesn't matter. I think true fans would rather the artist continue being creative than pumping out more of the same. Although you have no interest in what your art is worth or sells for, clearly Eelus does have an interest in the dollars. SEE: Andy Warhol

Eelus 3D Lenticular "Not Everything Is So Black & White", by tab1 on Mar 25, 2016 7:51:35 GMT 1, Every signed and numbered print (by any artist) is quite literally a signed contract between the artist and buyer. it's not quite literally a signed contract. Every signed and numbered print is just that, a signed and numbered print - it is NOT a contract. I can't believe people are arguing about what an artist should or shouldn't do - they can do whatever they want.
They will be arguing how to set a sales pitch next

As an example, I personally will not be very happy if I spent silly money on an original painting and later the artist went on to create another similarly looking piece because he thinks a new material should be incorporated into the work, or because a second buyer sees it, likes it and ask him to do a piece for him.
Maybe not a contract, but a commitment to the first buyer. Of course, nobody can stop an artist from doing what he wants with his works...

Haha if we shouldn't discuss whether people should or shouldn't do something on the grounds that they have the ability to do it, then we pretty much should never discuss anything.

I've been trying to wrap my head around why people are so upset when other more popular artists do this all the time and no one seems to care. But I think you post captures its nicely: it comes down to money. Specifically, money not well spent. People who have spent around 3k for the original print have made a poor investment, pure and simple. I don't think anyone with even a cursory knowledge of art history will argue that this print is going to be worth huge money in 5-10 years. Its just simply not going to be. But, people paid Banksy money for it because they love the art. Theres something kind of awesome in that people would forgo a Banksy for a piece that doesn't hold even a fraction of the investment value because they love the image (I'm comparing Eelus to Banksy simply because the stencil styles are somewhat similar and I assume fans of one are typically fans of the other).
Hence, Eelus's re-release of this print hurts on not only a financial level to these buyer but also an emotional one. They choose to support the lesser known artist and feel personally slighted buy this release. Am I close or just speaking out my ass?

People wont suddenly sell loads for ยฃ2k cause of this one. It may actually have the opposite effect. My post isn't referring to immediate devaluation, but long term investment. The factors that go into artwork price appreciation are to long to get into here in a post, but it is typically the frontrunners of any artistic movement that remain valuable years after the movement has ended. Here, we have a situation where people have spent 3k, a price that could get you a good choice of banksy prints the past few years, on a print done by a lesser known artist. Its not a knock on Eelus's art, just a fact. He will not be remembered like say Banksy or Shepard Fairey. Correspondingly, his artwork will not hold the same value. Sure I could be wrong, but history is a good indicator of these things.
Once again, I think its awesome that when people choose to spend their 3k they choose an image that resigned with them over the safe investment of a Banksy. Its that decision, one that is rarely made by us collectors, which is what I think is causing people to be so upset with this release.

Eelus 3D Lenticular "Not Everything Is So Black & White", by kevkevkev on Mar 25, 2016 17:07:00 GMT 1, Espo milked a few prints dry. Shep too. Banksys are never going to make you a fortune if youre buying now. One thing i have learned about art is you cant predict anything. Maybe it will hurt short term, maybe it will create more fans of e. And make these even harder to find. Personally i do think this should have been smaller. But if he was doing this with say, raven haired nobody with give a damn.

Eelus 3D Lenticular "Not Everything Is So Black & White", by Poster Bob on Mar 25, 2016 20:22:49 GMT 1, The value will drop, guaranteed. There will be an additional 104 copies of this print available next week, 100 of which at only a third of the current asking price. The price will plummet. People may decide that not selling is in their best interest so few may hit the market but the prices will drop regardless.

Maybe not a "fortune" but the prices certainly don't seem to be moving down over the last 12 months. And if you are buying now you've likely already paid a relative fortune. Even increasing value 20% of ยฃ15,000 to ยฃ30,000 over the next several years is a good deal of money to most. ...Not to make this about Banksy.

Eelus 3D Lenticular "Not Everything Is So Black & White", by fishandchips on Mar 25, 2016 21:24:18 GMT 1, I think people are upset because even though an artist might create an image and essentially own the right to do what they want with it, it's the fans that elevate a piece to its iconic status and of course the inevitable increase in value that follows. This intangible aspect is created by the fans and if you're a lucky owner of the piece, you want to preserve it. This reinvention of NEISBAW is purely designed to exploit the ongoing commercial success of the original but as I have said before no more than ATR or WTNU were designed to do... It would seem this time however he risks the integrity of the original and perhaps himself.

These will have to be shipped flat as well! Also keep in mind Fart Republic can't ship for shit! I just want to see what all the different versions look like in a nice long YouTube video? Is that too much to ask? Also will this look like a Mike Everatt print that he regularly produces? Will it have the wavy lines in it?

Eelus 3D Lenticular "Not Everything Is So Black & White", by Someones Brain on Mar 26, 2016 11:28:02 GMT 1, I don't want to make a prediction on whether the price of the prints will rise or fall. I have a strong assumption but it doesn't matter for what I want to say: if you cannot deal with new versions or slightly changed reprints, don't buy prints. If you want something truly unique and original, then buy exactly that: an original.

Somehow street art sanctioned by an oppressive government loses a bit of the fun. Then again, I'm sure it pays better than risking your life to paint something meaningful in say Palestine.
