Having dealt with artists with aliases unknown to the public (and I haven't been in the buying game very long) which I know their real names, I would assume 100s (maybe more) of people know who he is and remain silent as they are part of a club. People have met him. People know the suspected individuals and link the two easily. So I think no. If anything he would release stuff under another name (in the same vein of releasing what appears to be knock offs) as a statement on his name being a selling point, but I suspect the savvy nature of his fan base would know its him.
He does release stuff under another name, and another body. It's called mr brainwash. I would bet a lot that he still takes a huge cut out of every brainwash sale.

So many Artists in the scene have been using their "Street Names" in releasing prints, but it now seems to be the trend to start putting things like Silky aka Daniel Silk. So do you think Banksy will ever get to that point with hiding his real name is no longer needed? Also do you think Some Artists might also have gone off their street names and wished they had just started out under their real name in the first place?

My two pennies says no. It will never happen (even if Banksy wasn't "Team Banksy" now). If we put the truth that Damien bought Gunningham out, took over the brand, tried and failed (on several occasions) to copyright his extensive catalog of works, and a bunch of other madness - using his real name (or the members of the team's names now) would do nothing but kill the mystery - which drives the entire Banksy market. It would be a suicide move.

The recent copyright cases donโt seem to be going well for him and the GDP plan didnโt appear to make any difference to that situation.

He could probably still be arrested for past misdemeanours. For others they might not want the celebrity, they just enjoy creating art or like the money. Could also be to try and avoid copyright issues or mr taxman. Lastly there are those that thought it was the in thing to do being a trendy urban artist. Or the forum name came first and stuck. Kind of like Daft Punk. They've watched themselves get awards from the audience and sent up friends as them since no one knows who they really are (I mean some people do, but the vast, vast majority do not). It's possible Banksy has greeted you at an event as someone else, or even served you drinks just to see what people think of his stuff while not being noticed. Anonymity allows for those kind of "secret shopper" opportunities that named artists and individuals can't have since they likely get brown-nosed all the time.

I met them in Miami when I was a hotel manager. They came in as ultra-VIP guests and used their real names, right after Discovery came out. I didn't know Guy Manuel de Homem Cristo and Tomas Banglater were Daft Punk so I took them to their rooms. Before they checked out, I was reading the sleve of Discovery and saw their names...my blood pressure dropped! haha Needless to say, I am a huge music fan of theirs, but as people they were pricks. |
