Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by jam on Dec 3, 2007 22:36:32 GMT 1, graeme... I agree 100%. I am not able to get away to fly over, and the trip for me from the US would cost 3k for me alone and 5k for my wife to go along. I would rather pay POW three or four times the listed print cost and have the full amount go to charity, than pay airline ticked prices for last minute travel and have that money miss going to something more deserving.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by dotdot on Dec 3, 2007 22:39:57 GMT 1, So who is actually going to Bethlehem? ;D and who's gonna be the first person to get back and post some pits of the show ;D It would be nice if one of the news channels had given us a bit more footage of looking round the show Cant see Brad and Angelina making the trip can you? ;D If I never had any commitments I'd leave in a flash. I just think it would be great just to be there and a perfect excuse also for some site seeing in a distant land but hopefully I'd be bringing back a rather different souvenir to most of the other tourists. Saying that, I'd probably find a ticket, get through customs and security, find the Ghetto and 'Ma Barker' will probalaly say ' youi ain't coming in'!!! That would be classic huh!
i can imagine the reverse happening...(in a murphy's law kind of way..)
you'd just bought something special ...on your way cautiously back they say - you have what in there (pointing at your bazzoka tube) ? "what do you mean don't open the tube!"
this has got to happen to someone !
let's hope they get through it - to the other side ....
to those who go - good luck and be careful - i have heard many stories some about a land of epic proportions - it might just change your life.
- a trip worth taking ?

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by barry cilit on Dec 3, 2007 22:40:49 GMT 1, i've mainly just been reading bits and bobs this evening but i must say i think there is something a little bit dis-tasteful about this years ghetto. if they put on a show for peole to go to to highlight the problems that exist in the west bank then great, but to play the game the way they know it exists is in poor tatse a little and i think it is somewhat exploitative. anyone who ventures over there from anywhere further than an hour or so away, is going purely for the exclusive wares, not to go on a fact-finding mission, or to attempt to see life through the eyes of an everyday palestinian. sure, if it's presence alone encourages a few to go and open their minds to how much of a struggle these people have to go through on a daily and weekly basis, then that surely must be a good thing. to me, it looks like the commercial side of the operation is totally out of keeping with the so called message they are trying put across. put on a show, let people come - for the right reasons - and raise some money for local causes. when you combine the two, in the same place i think you have a serious conflict of interests. to add, the gold flag is a reject print, the trolley is on reject paper and that pigeon is just crap. no doubt the masses will be all over them like flies round s hit but i would still have my reservations even if the art was class, the fact it is pretty lame makes it all the more tragic. the print sales should be an aside, a by-product of the work on the wall. sadly i think it will end up that the wall will be a by-product of the print sale.
WOW! it's like you typed what I was thinking EXACTLY! apart from i would never have made all those words make sense! you saved me a job. p.s I also find it a wee bit patronising towards the local artists.
+1 from me

cheers barry, i'm for parts of it, ie local kids benefitting etc but the emphasis will get toally lost by the time this thing finishes IMO.
jam made a great point, sell the art high, online, and give more to local charities. this should happen though once the event has finished. get people over there to see the wall, to get involved and to spend some time amongst the locals. all pow have done is to commercialise their event in the exact same way as the annual festival they so lovingly make a mockery of.
massive props to banksy though, one step ahead as ever.

Just as an alternative thought RBR, and not disagreeing with you as such, earlier I thought to myself "what a great opportunity to go and see somewhere I'm constantly reading about but never thought I'd visit". If my diary/finances were just an iccle bit different I could really see myself jumping on a plane and checking it out myself. On the otherside though having seen the 6 'o' clock news about Banksy I hope it wasn't just a PR stunt using Bethlehem as an excuse.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by loucastel on Dec 3, 2007 23:17:37 GMT 1, The pr that has been gained out of this event is priceless, ok so the money is going to the kids from the store sale ,but as it says in their blurb "this is one of the most contentious places on earth" so most contentious translates to me to most newsworthy, after they have given the kids the money, packed up, and come home they will still be riding high on the publicity. If it is all about the kids what about all the inner city kids in this country? ohh wait a minute, not such good pr, If they really wanted to make a statement how about Sudan? If you really wanted to see this country why not just get a flight and see it ,why does there have to be something other than reality to make it worthwhile. I hope the kids get loads of money, but i do question the motives of holding it in Bethlehem.

my mistake, i thought they'd done it to promote themselves. at least that's the impression i got when i opened the times this morning and there on P3 was a full page exclusive. (with the santasghetto website attatched)
yeah POW are doing this for totally altruistic reasons.............IMHO i think they are exploiting a struggling people to gain massive press exposure of their event and subsequently their business.
