Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by monstris on Dec 3, 2007 23:44:23 GMT 1, Poor lad seems to have marked everything as Banksy.... no worse than some of the news channel photos, who've also tagged most photos as Banksy
Ha ha ha ha. Just waiting for a random man in a keffiyeh to be called "Banksy" by some news outfit after an exclusive. Heard that Julian Manyon from ITN turned up and, after being told that Banksy wasn't there, said "No Banksy, no story". His boss then phoned the organisers in an apologising grovel begging for any handouts they may be supplying...sadly for ITN, there are no handouts. You wants the story, you puts in the sweat.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by funster on Dec 3, 2007 23:44:46 GMT 1, The pr that has been gained out of this event is priceless, ok so the money is going to the kids from the store sale ,but as it says in their blurb "this is one of the most contentious places on earth" so most contentious translates to me to most newsworthy, after they have given the kids the money, packed up, and come home they will still be riding high on the publicity. If it is all about the kids what about all the inner city kids in this country? ohh wait a minute, not such good pr, If they really wanted to make a statement how about Sudan? If you really wanted to see this country why not just get a flight and see it ,why does there have to be something other than reality to make it worthwhile. I hope the kids get loads of money, but i do question the motives of holding it in Bethlehem. Don't scrooge POWs christmas present to us here that want it. Fu ck all you negative cun ts that can't see a good thing. I was in a good christmas spirit all day til the usual negativity started to pop up here.
Eddie chill, there are hundreds of examples where PR for a company and doing good things for a community work hand in hand (ie Tesco comps for schools), just look at the corporate generosity that happens around the world. Without doubt exceptional coverage has been brought to the middle east to people who may not have taken notice before AND for the people who already knew all about the middle east they now also know about POW And just to show ya some extra love I'll + you too x

I was in a good christmas spirit all day til the usual negativity started to pop up here. my mistake, i thought they'd done it to promote themselves. at least that's the impression i got when i opened the times this morning and there on P3 was a full page exclusive. (with the santasghetto website attatched) yeah POW are doing this for totally altruistic reasons.............IMHO i think they are exploiting a struggling people to gain massive press exposure of their event and subsequently their business.
I have to disagree when you mention exploitation. It must be great for the local artists taking part. lets also not forget the Palestians are people like you and I with hopes and aspirations. It gives them something to look forward to - to come and see world famous art on their doorstep.
For an artshow taking place at Bethlehem and all proceeds going to charity is a big thing. For those that are crying and moaning about PR I'd like to see you put your hands in your pockets and equal what POW will raise. This is probably the best method for artists to support a cause and get some exposure - those that do attend will not be staying in a bubble - they will witness the hardships and stuggles the Palestian people face every day.
Its just goes to show the power of art - People will travel across the globe for this.
Also I would say Banksy and POW are definately 'keeping it real'. It seems the message of consumerism has been replaced with consumerism in recent years. The synics please give Mr.B and POW some credit where its due.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by alsbabar on Dec 4, 2007 0:05:00 GMT 1, So RBR, you wont be buying any works then that are released online?
I think it is a great PR exercise and opportunity, and one that will forever stick in your minds. As far as I am concerned it couldnt have happened in a better place at a better time. ++++1 to POW, Banksy and all the bold/brave artist who are prepared to make such a statement.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by Ron Goldsurfer on Dec 4, 2007 0:05:59 GMT 1, POW is doing a good thing for people that are struggling for survival and there is comments about them doing it only for their own gain... but hello, what the fuck! They could easily have done the same fuckin show in London, get well paid, and stuck the money in their own pockets without a single argument against it.
There will always be arguments that you try to emphasize yourself and gain money on other peoples disasters when you try to help out. You must more or less kill yourself and donate your body to be trustworthy. And even after that some will have doubts ...
Ok, my english is sadly not on the level to do me justice, but at least I have tried to bring my thoughts forward.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by mievin on Dec 4, 2007 0:08:04 GMT 1, I think they chose the location as it says on the site 'It's opposite the Church of the Nativity (where Santa Claus was actually born)'. For a Christmas art show this is the ultimate location...Sudan doesn't really make sense. I also think that as it is their show it's a bit unfair to criticise where they give the money.
On the news on TV I have seen, the emphasis has been on the fact that Banksy has painted the wall (even though they are showing other artists work too). I' d rather see great art on the news (with a political twist) rather than the fact the Spice Girls concert has just begun. The news programmes I have heard aren't really focussing on the fact that someone may be able to flip a print or mentioning POW but mainly on the art side and you can't deny that bringing a number of artists (including local artists) to paint the wall at the same time is a good creative gesture and putting something back.
I do also like the fact that there have been threads on here discussing travelling and the issues of how your passport (and also which airline you fly with) can effect how you are treated. Having travelled there in the past it was a real eye opener seeing how people are living day to day. Anyone who flys out there to pick up a print will definitely get an experience over and above just purchasing art.
Just wish I could afford to go out there. My uncle is there at the moment but his mobile phone is switched off and I can't leave a message (Doh!).

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by dave313perry on Dec 4, 2007 0:29:53 GMT 1, I disagree with the comments about POW doing this for the wrong reasons, to shake things up and bring a sense of realism to many people who buy a Banksy as a status symbol for a collector...its the ferrari of a car finatic.
ok so im gona put this straight down the line.....
If your going to bethlehem your going there to better yourself - status wise as a collector or to try and make some money on a seriously rare Banksy..... anyone claiming to go for a love of art i would seriously doubt it.
Much of the art there is not exactly ground breaking nor is many of it new, in content or execution. infact much of the work is recycled and techniques that these artists have shown at exhibitions over the last 12-18 months. So if your prepared to travel thousands of miles to view the exhibition for its simple aesthetics you seriously need to widen your eyes, and what better place to do that for someone who is obviously encapsulated in the trend of Banksy and co.
What i think POW is saying - is that if your stupid enough to idolise a movement and a small selection of artist to the point of travelling to one of the most hostile places on earth then you need to take a step back and question your own motives for such a trip. what better sense of realism is there than buying a print for a price that would feed a family of 10 for f**k knows how long!
hope you understand what im getting at - but if your going there or even considering going - and your not a millionaire, why the f**k are/were you??? for a Banksy or for your 'love of art'
i would love to know.....and eagerly await a counter argument!!!

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by morrissey1 on Dec 4, 2007 0:59:42 GMT 1, I got into a couple "debates" earlier, so I will leave much of it alone for now, but I think one major mistake that POW are making with the Bethlehem SG is the fact that the site is going to be a bigger story than the art, and in the past the art has been the story....so when the store makes bigger headlines than the products, you got yourself a bit of a weird problem....but again, for the record, Im not knocking the art (as I will happily buy what I can)...but unfortunately for the artists this time, the art is not the story

To be honest I think that is part the point - the situation is the biggest story, holding a Ghetto to make people more aware a slightly smaller story and raising money an extra. On reflection I'm with Dave, fine you see first hand the situation which knocks people out of complacency and may make them think twice about what other things could be done with the money they spend on the art, or the art is a little reward for being arsed to go and see first hand. I'm still confused to be honest. Don't want to sound all negative but would people go if nothing was for sale? That is a question we all need to ponder!

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by dave313perry on Dec 4, 2007 1:12:00 GMT 1, indeed there is something there to tempt you over in faint hope you may get an extremely rare Banksy - but your more likely to be strip searched scowled at and interegated passing through security check points, and get alot of unwanted attention from locals...
sort of like sitting in a piss filled alley - thorugh night and day - witnessing someone get their head stamped on - and a pisshead talking utter bollox to everyone in the que, who stank also stank of piss!!! not to mention - not attaining the object of the days events!!!
sound familiar? reality check no.2

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by morrissey1 on Dec 4, 2007 1:13:35 GMT 1, I think that what the artists are doing is commendable, amazing work that probably will have a very real impact on the people and on the place they are visiting--that isn't my issue with it--that is the good that will come out of it...I just think it's questionable, at least questionable, that POW are hocking their wares at the same time..that's the conflict of interest for me....but like I said, I have my own conflict of interest in all of this, because I too want the prints (or originals, yeah right), so that is contributing to the very thing that turns me off the whole thing....I guess there's no right or wrong here, just artists creating art and businessmen creating business.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by kiy on Dec 4, 2007 1:36:41 GMT 1, I am going to Palestine for the Love of Palestine. I think it will be a great trip; I will get the opportunity to pray in the third holiest place for Muslims on Eid. If I get to buy some art at the same time that would be great but not the sole reason for going. I must admit tho, it was the Ghetto that gave me the added inspiration to make the trip. I don't think it will be easy to buy anything worth buying and I am not going to queue for days....
I think itโs great that major artists have seen the plight of the Palestinians as a worthy cause to support. This is an oppression not seen anywhere else in the world and is the cause of all Major tensions in the Middle East. There have been over 65 UN resolutions condemning Israel for its actions against the Palestinians, yet no actions/sanctions are taken against Israel. I donโt know who chose the location for the Ghetto but undoubtedly the Artist involved had a say. Unfortunately we live in an unjust world, everyone should stand up for any injustices even if it does not directly affect them. This is the only way to better the world we live in. Will POW be able to make a difference? On a small scale, YES. It will bring attention to a part of the world that many know nothing about. This can only be a good thing.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by BK83 on Dec 4, 2007 1:37:17 GMT 1, Still don't know what I think about this.... On the one hand it supports a great cause. On the other hand i'm a cynical bastard and it has all the irony of my mom calling me a son of a bitch.....

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by gtf on Dec 4, 2007 1:42:31 GMT 1, Since seeing www.flickr.com/photos/chevali/ I'm now looking at going, and I hadn't up to them.
Chances of me getting an original while there = 0 since I don't have the cash. I'll be too late for the Banksy prints so that is not my reason either. Chances of being in the process of travelling and missing the online prints = high
I just think it will be a genuinly life enriching experience even though I will end up with nothing for my walls as a result. Basically I've got a choice of going there or buying some art, can't do both and I know what I would rather do. Only problem is persuading the boss, missus and getting the travel organised...........

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by gtf on Dec 4, 2007 2:01:49 GMT 1, I got into a couple "debates" earlier, so I will leave much of it alone for now, but I think one major mistake that POW are making with the Bethlehem SG is the fact that the site is going to be a bigger story than the art, and in the past the art has been the story....so when the store makes bigger headlines than the products, you got yourself a bit of a weird problem....but again, for the record, Im not knocking the art (as I will happily buy what I can)...but unfortunately for the artists this time, the art is not the story To be honest I think that is part the point - the situation is the biggest story, holding a Ghetto to make people more aware a slightly smaller story and raising money an extra.
I'm thinking of going and can't afford the orginals so there might as well be nothing on sale.
