Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by Dead Elvis on Dec 4, 2007 2:03:32 GMT 1, I just think it will be a genuinly life enriching experience even though I will end up with nothing for my walls as a result....
Never choose materialism over something that could turn out to be a life-changing experience. If you can afford it, go! To walk along the wall, physically touch it, while taking in the smells and sounds of the city should be all the motivation you need! ;D

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by arcam on Dec 4, 2007 2:25:04 GMT 1, I think one major mistake that POW are making with the Bethlehem SG is the fact that the site is going to be a bigger story than the art That's the whole point and why it's brilliant.

+1 from me. It can turn into a bit of a habit...I first went over 4-5 years ago and can't get enough. Even took up learning Arabic.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by robertlondon on Dec 4, 2007 2:46:58 GMT 1, I'm normally the most cynical person around but I do feel that the POW decision to open up in Bethlehem was done with the best of intention first and foremost.
Banksy has a history with that wall. Had he never been there before, and POW just decided to go there then it would have been fairly exploitative. But, given the past history, I feel its done with the best of intention.
Also having seen the flickr pics of the Ghetto, it feels great to think that a whole load of young kids who would never normally get a chance to experience anything like this, now get an event which we've been lucky enough to have in the past. Hopefully they'll love it as much as we've done in previous years.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by robertlondon on Dec 4, 2007 3:04:05 GMT 1, Banksy Ghetto Prints:
Please note: In the store you will get a voucher for your purchase and payment/shipping will be arranged at a later date.
Am I right in thinking they're just going to give away vouchers then ask for payment later?... if so, the news will soon get round that these vouchers are worth a fortune. I wouldn't be surprised if the population of Bethlehem are queueing round the corner, all the way to Foyles by the morning.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by finsburyparkranger on Dec 4, 2007 3:04:35 GMT 1, The ghetto itself always was an organic piece of art. A moving space that challenged the chaos around it. Having Santa's ghetto at Bethlehem is a great piece art in its self. Giving Profits to local kids charities is a great act of kindness. Taking a load of street artists and tooling them up to hit the apartheid wall is an act of war .... on apathy.
The really beautiful thing is that its all about situation, something that banksy is becoming a genius at ....

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by goffy on Dec 4, 2007 4:43:19 GMT 1, And here is my two cents worth. Santa's Ghetto in Bethlehem is a publicity stunt but a worthy one. I applaud POW and the artists involved for doing this and giving the profits of the sales to the various children's charities. If as I believe that the artwork is mostly originals with a couple of Banksy re-do's then I believe that they will be out of the reach of the local people. According to the reports 70% of the local community is unemployed and I believe that the last thing they will want to spend their money on is art. If they sold cheaper prints at local rates then maybe they would buy some, maybe even buy some to flip, who would blame them? At best I'm sure that SG will be no more than a curiosity to most locals and at worst offensive to a lot of muslims as basically Santa is associated with Christmas which celebrates Jesus' birthday. And while they believe he was a prophet of Islam (God) they are no big fans. The good part in all this is that the art work on the streets and walls with Banksy's name attached has hopefully brought good publicity to the area and it's problems. But this could have been done without SG being in Bethlehem. I think that maybe the fact that they have now got an SG online store means that either they are still in the business of making money or, if those proceeds also go to charity then they will make a lot more from their usual customers to pass on to the children of Palestine.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by hlarmy on Dec 4, 2007 7:53:08 GMT 1, I personally think that what POW have done is somewhat of a masterstroke as it exploits the rising reputation of a number of artists who are increasingly grabbing the headlines. and helps to use them to raise awareness of the Israel / Palestine conflict. It has come around at the perfect time and offers so much more than if it was based in the heart of London.
I know very little about art but have been drawn to it by the work of Banksy (at first, others since) and the messages behind his work; this is the case for many young people who have, if you like, jumped on the Banksy bandwagon. So why not use his growing status to raise some awareness of the situation in this region? On a personal front, I was aware of the problems that exist but have become somewhat immune to the frequent news bulletins that we watch on the News at Ten. SG will help to both raise awareness of the situation to those who hadn't given it much thought in the past and will also help to re-ignite the interest of those like myself. I'm certain SG being in Bethlehem will change very little in terms of peace and political alignment but if it helps re-ignite interest and also highlights the situation to the younger generation it has served its purpose. The fact that much of the proceeds will also filter into the local community is also a massive bonus. Good luck to POW; I truly hope the next month is a huge success for POW, for those travelling out there to see SG firsthand and, most importantly, for the people of Bethlehem and the surrounding region. I look forward to watching it from afar and hearing the stories and seeing the photos on here in the next couple of weeks / months.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by pezlow on Dec 4, 2007 8:14:36 GMT 1, What a bunch of cynics there are on this board. How many other businesses do you know who would donate the entire proceeds of their most profitable venture of the year to charity? If they get publicity out of doing that then every single last bit of the publicity is extremely well deserved in my book.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by veralynn on Dec 4, 2007 8:44:12 GMT 1, Couldn;t agree more Pez - the cynic in everyone can see how this event will get huge publicity but not just for POW, for the general situation also. To donate a huge amount of money (and its not just the till receipts, its the 'time' in organisation also) is a huge gesture so well done. No one slags beefy off when he goes on his charity strolls, such things have kept him in Shredded Wheat for years and got him a medal and personally I dont see a massive differential here. Well done POW, no doubt you'll be off to meet her Maj soon, lots of art at her gaff judging by last night's TV.

Yep, logged off yesterday cos the posts just fucking depressed me, guaranteed the haters and cynics have done fuck all for anyone ever, "we all want prints, we all want money" types.. cynics seem to like to project their "self interest" philosophy as a means to not doing anything themselves.. Banksy and co just spent 6 months setting up a show in Palestine at Xmas as well as creating an amazing amount of street work, to highlight some important issues and raise awareness of our behaviour at Xmas. ..and people are still bitching that they're in it for the money or PR.. ha ha..
It's an amazing piece of situationist art in itself. More reason than enough to go see it.
Anyone going ?

Although I'm sure that a little event like this wont change anything it is like playing your part.
I can re-cycle and donate to charity.. Companies have a responsibility to use their power over people to highlight issues and concerns worldwide
Fair play POW

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by Harveyn on Dec 4, 2007 9:47:16 GMT 1, Well done POW and all the artists involved.
An absolute fantastic way to raise awareness of the issues in Palestine and what a magnanimous gesture to donate all proceeds directly to those most in need. What a perfect way to use art to its maximum effect and what a great way to get across a message. "Art is revolutionary or it is nothing".
We should all be humbled and slightly ashamed at are own materialistic attitudes. I do not think anyone can say they have not been guilty of that.
It is a truly beautiful gesture.

I've not got a lot of time for reading and posting this week but I agree with all the above. One quick point, there seems to be some whinging that POW might be making money off their online sales, yeah so what, look at what they're doing with their profits highlighting political situations and focusing the gaze of the media where it should be. Makes me even more pleased to have bought their expensive posters.

Ditto, ditto that. I know that you never gonna please everyone. But it feels like people will only to stop moaning if the POW will sell them Banksy for 4X below market value so they can immediately flog it for that much profit...then these people will praise the POW as being the best.
