Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by mike hunt on Dec 4, 2007 22:43:15 GMT 1, Was northern Ireland easy to sort out? Certainly, it was a less complicated situation. Once you are there and hear all sides of the argument, you understand that it is anything but simple to sort out. Also, not to take away importance but the situation in Sudan or Zimbabwe for example, is a lot worse. And before anyone says 'on yer bike', thats exactly what I will do, because I have boycotted Oil due to the Saudi human rights abuses and turkish delight because of the oppression of kurds (though I don't like it that much so its not so difficult).

lol myloker I was just doing an anti-occupation slogan that can't be construed as Anti-Israel.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by loucastel on Dec 4, 2007 22:50:41 GMT 1, Does anyone on here know anything about the history of this conflict? If not take a look on Wikipedia, as for living with constant searches etc perhaps thats something to do with living with the constant threat of suicide bombers, remember what happened with the London bombings, the way people felt and that happened once, In Israel it was a daily occurance. Nothing has been said about the suicide bombing of inocent women and children. lets not lose sight of both sides of the story and if it makes you feel good to boycott stuff from Israel and not eat the advocados so be it, at the end of the day they are all human beings who deserve to live in peace. check out the history, great job and good luck to the artists out there.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by valeha on Dec 4, 2007 22:55:59 GMT 1, hey lou,
remember many of these searches take place in the west bank so even walking from ones home to the post office can sometimes go through 3-4 checkpoints, I'm not exagerrating, I've seen itfor myself, and the way I felt after two weeks of having a gun in my face at each checkpoint I went through was awful, I just can't imagine how it feels to go through that everyday.
Also I could never condone the killing of any innocent person, but do you think if the Palestinians had the military fighter jets that Israel do that they would suicide bomb...I don't.
Peace.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by loucastel on Dec 4, 2007 23:01:10 GMT 1, Respect what you are saying Valeha, I still think that living with the constant threat of suicide bombings would make anyone feel just a bit paranoid. If the Palestinians had the military power Israel would have been wiped off the map years ago, after all it is a tiny country with a population of only about 7 milion surrounded by enemies.

now there could be a whole other argument................about who funds the israeli army etc...and why?.......i have very little knowledge of post-war history so i'll stay out of this but it might be worth thinking about where all this negativity could end up. like has already been said, it's not black and white and with the greatest respect, it's bigger than this forum, bigger than banksy/POW and bigger than art. it's life and death.

Oh for fucks sake.. The Israeli's are tanning themselves on the beaches of Tel Aviv whilst illegally occupying another country. They're in the process of making a massive colonial and illegal expansion into the West Bank under the pretense of "security measures". They're well on their way to building the worlds largest prison, thus depriving tens of thousands of a means of making a living from their own land. Imagine, a 400 mile equivalent of the Berlin wall, 400 hundred fucking miles !!! They're annexing all territories west of the wall (it intrudes more than 10 miles inside the green line), in effect creating a series of Ghetto's, (They should fucking know better). They have a very clear policy/strategy of ethnic cleansing in Jerusalem, continue to deny the legal right of return for Palestinian refugee's, consistently break international law and UN resolutions whilst violating the human rights of Palestinians on a daily basis. They propose that the Palestinian state or territory be constructed from the remnants of their occupied land left after the construction of the wall, in effect, a series of walled Ghetto's with machine gun towers.
The Israel government commit these crimes with the tacit support of America and others in the West whilst actively intimidating anyone from mentioning it. I sincerely hope that one day, the people responsible for this wall, will be held accountable for these and other crimes too numerous to list, and hopefully one day soon.

A very good point Rupert, +1. It's easy to put the world to rights via a pc (or Mac).
The situation in the Middle East is soooooo convoluted and it extends way beyond that particular neck of the woods into global politics. I have enough trouble sorting out Manchestermikes argument with Crackawacka with regards Torres, so I'm keeping out of this particular thread.

Their would be no Israel if every surrounding country had their way. It was a huge struggle just to become a country. They are trying to protect themselves the best they can. They arent murdering innocent people. People fail to realize how much hate their is towards Israelis all over the world. Even with the media on their side.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by loucastel on Dec 4, 2007 23:51:23 GMT 1, the State of Israel was proclaimed on May 14, 1948, one day before the expiry of the British Mandate for Palestine.[52] Not long after, five Arab countries – Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq – attacked Israel, launching the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.[52] After almost a year of fighting, a ceasefire was declared and temporary borders, known as the Green Line, were instituted. wonder why they eventually built a wall?

I advise watching Death in Gaza...it may enlighten you on the idea that no innocent person has been killed.

lou the wall is around the west bank, it isn't there to protect Israel from an attack from Egypt or Syria etc...it is there to annex even more Palestinian land and cut them off from their means of survival.

ICJ Ruling, International Court of Justice, 2004 (Keep in mind this is our court, not the Palestinians, not my opinion, but some of the worlds leading legal minds)

B. By fourteen votes to one, Israel is under an obligation to terminate its breaches of international law; it is under an obligation to cease forthwith the works of construction of the wall being built in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including in and around East Jerusalem, to dismantle forthwith the structure therein situated, and to repeal or render ineffective forthwith all legislative and regulatory acts relating thereto, in accordance with paragraph 151 of this Opinion;
C. By fourteen votes to one, Israel is under an obligation to make reparation for all damage caused by the construction of the wall in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including in and around East Jerusalem;
D. By thirteen votes to two, All States are under an obligation not to recognize the illegal situation resulting from the construction of the wall and not to render aid or assistance in maintaining the situation created by such construction; all States parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War of 12 August 1949 have in addition the obligation, while respecting the United Nations Charter and international law, to ensure compliance by Israel with international humanitarian law as embodied in that Convention;

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by valeha on Dec 5, 2007 0:07:58 GMT 1, ricos - if i went to your house and chucked you out at gun point, could i keep your house?
and if i gave you your toilet...but only your toilet back, would you be grateful?
I recommend Israeli historian Avi Shlaim's The Iron Wall - a definitive history about the birth and survival of the Israeli state.
Avi shlaim is a self confessed Zionist by the way, but this is a very insightful read.
