Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by lesbianwednesdays on Dec 5, 2007 15:14:36 GMT 1, bunnyboiler, i read that piece, very interesting. i take it that very same ariel sharon went on to be israeli prime minister? shocking.
there are some parts without citation but it's still an awful, harrowing event.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by valeha on Dec 5, 2007 15:15:05 GMT 1, cheers CBL.
to be fair I am glad to see some political debate on the forum, it has in the past been met with hostility, but Banksy has obviously worked his magic and this has allowed us to have a fair debate about a very serious issue, that of the need for a viable Palestinian homeland, don't hold my breath for Tony Blair sorting it out though....who the hell made him Middle east Peace envoy? I'm still waiting to hear...April fools...we gotcha didn't we, of course he's not a peace envoy he's a lunatic!
hehe

no asterisks here, perhaps you'd like to consider the subject more than the langauge?

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by spirit on Dec 5, 2007 15:19:21 GMT 1, I'm really starting to wonder if getting everyone to focus on and debate this issue is actually a good thing. For the most part it seems to make people take one side or the other, focus on their differences and then start arguing with and insulting each other.
The fact is, both sides are right and both sides are wrong. Both are the victims and perpetrators of injustice and atrocity.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by robinbanks on Dec 5, 2007 15:20:27 GMT 1, I think it's great that this thread has opened up a debate about a very serious subject that I for one knew very little about - and I feel my eyes have certainly been opened. Although I still don't feel ready to make any judgment or comments of my own on the matter.
That said - does anyone else feel that this interesting and worthy debate should be moved to a different thread?
This thread was after all supposed to be about the Ghetto and the wonderful art and artists they have over there.
*bracing myself for mass neggage*

Yeah, that's what I was meaning about moving this thread. Seems to be a lot of bitching going on now.

The only real way of resolving conflict is to talk. Just try make it not personal. I'm very interested to hear views from both sides. Especially real personal experiences or ideas for a solutions. Anyway who's seen the new camel graf on the wall, it looks great (the one with two kids under on santasghetto.com). So nice to see the local people actually enjoying the experience of new art in their home town.

While undoubtedly tugging at the heart strings, this video certainly does not sum everything up. It is classic propaganda and only shows one side of the story. In order to sum everything up it would also need to include scenes such as the aftermath of suicide bombings on israeli busses and cafe's etc. There are 2 SIDES at WAR here and war is always f**king horrible and it's always the innocent that suffer most.
peace

Anyway who's seen the new camel graf on the wall, it looks great (the one with two kids under on santasghetto.com).
Real experiences summary: went to the territories, met some very nice people who didn't give a damn about the politics/beliefs of their leaders, they just wanted to get on with lives without that crap. Met some other people in the territories who threw rocks at me (and they didn't even get to know me first!) Went to Israel, met some very nice people who also just wanted to get on with their lives, and others who were terrified of the future if they compromise. Got a better understanding of the issues from both sides. Met a soldier who served in Ramallah, and released a DVD of his and his friends experiences - it went all over the world, including C4 and the beeb. Was purely observational and non-judgmental - just a factual account of how the whole situation messes up the minds of everyone, no matter how liberal or left wing you were before. I got a copy and its fascinating. The reality is so different.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by valeha on Dec 5, 2007 16:02:16 GMT 1, mike it seems our experiences were somewhat juxtaposed. got to the Isreali border from Jordan, got my bags ripped open, presents ripped open, clothes strewn over the floor and camera broken, shortly after got strip searched, still the most humiliating experince of my life, held there for 5 hours and asked questions about every private aspect of my life. eventually let out and then called back to check my bags yet again!
then went to Palestine met some of the most beautiful people on earth who have been tormented by 200 odd settlers, protected by approx 1000 IDF. Met a child who was kidnapped by the IDF and had his fingers broken by them, met a child who told me about the Jenin massacres, the sadness was in his eyes constantly.
saw a flat that was bombed to smitherines and where a man died having a heart attack after seeing his home destroyed.
then went to Israel, where children seemed pretty happy, houses were upstanding not piles of rubble, people were nice, I have nothing against them...but there is a BIG BIG difference between life in Isreal and life in Palestine.
but we all have different personal stories I guess.
Can't wait to hear the stories from those who are out here now at the Ghetto!

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by mike hunt on Dec 5, 2007 16:02:33 GMT 1, Its called breaking the silence. Just reading the reverse (they gave me an english copy) - you can find more info on www.breakingthesilence.org.il
I should make clear that this is an excellent piece and in no way is trying to demonise Israel. It has support in Israel because people like to know what they are sending their children into - are they defending the country? Whats involved? Its easy to bring up specific video clips or events on both sides with emotional human stories - we would be here forever. Seems that journalists do this all too often. Not too long ago i was watching a news report with a journalist holding a dead child in her arms and crying. That is not journalism. Anyway, if this link works or you can find a copy, it is top stuff.
