Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by hypovalaemic on Dec 5, 2007 16:07:18 GMT 1, +1 nuart. am speechless, nothing more needs to said really. It sums it up really doesn't it. While undoubtedly tugging at the heart strings, this video certainly does not sum everything up. It is classic propaganda and only shows one side of the story. In order to sum everything up it would also need to include scenes such as the aftermath of suicide bombings on israeli busses and cafe's etc. There are 2 SIDES at WAR here and war is always f**king horrible and it's always the innocent that suffer most. peace
+1 Spirit
Thank you

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by bob1 on Dec 5, 2007 16:18:48 GMT 1, Top post Bob as well. Won't bother to comment as I'd be way out of my depth. Except to ask: I take it it's distributive justice that brings about the peace and not the retributive kind?
Equality Freedom of movement Withdraw to the 1967 UN resolution 242 agreed borders supported by both Fatah and Hamas (only 22% of historic Palestine) Right of return or compensation for those families or relatives of those forced to flee from there homes. Self determination and respect of elected government End to all illegal settlements peppered in and around the West Bank Bring down the wall that aims to further imprison the population of Palestine from the outside world as well as annex more territory. (both the wall, settlements, checkpoints and Israeli only roads bring the originally agreed 22% of historic Palestine down to about 13%) Control of industry, water, electric, etc.
The list could go on.
What we have in Palestine is not direct fascism and of course it is in no way near the scale of the Holocaust, but to believe that such parallels don't exist is to be blind to oppression.
A state founded by forcibly evicting the native. A Jewish state where Israeli Arabs are second class citizen's who live in a high rate of poverty and get paid a third of what there Jewish counterpart gets paid.
A state that has poisoned water supply's to Palestine land in order to try and make men infertile and stop the growth of the Palestinian population.
A state where any person of Jewish origin can come and live and be subsidized to live in an illegal settlement in luxury. Settlements that sit on hills and tower over Palestinian towns often robbing there water supply's, whilst Palestinians who original fled there homes may never return. Where millions are refugees not even allowed to return to the West Bank or Gaza. Where Palestinians every movement and action is dictated, restricted and controlled by the Israeli state rubber stamp.
Palestinians are not only cut off from the world but from each other, If you don't have the right ID card you may never be allowed to leave your little town, checkpoints are everywhere and settlers or soldiers will constantly stop you in the street and demand your ID if you cant show it off to jail it is.
Innocent Palestinians are killed every day, the excuse that "we do not target Innocent lives" is redundant when the state seems to kill so many of them.
The use of human shields whilst raiding houses
the massacre at Jenin, where tanks and Apaches had a field day leaving hundreds dead and which UN officials were not allowed to visit.
Constant Curfews, raids and incursions, theft of property and the bulldozing of homes.
Star of David's (hijacked in the name of Zionism) graffited around the old city of Hebron ( a once vibrant market place now a ghost town) where 2000 soldiers protect 200 illegal settlers in the middle of a city of 130,000 Muslim and Christian Arabs.
I just want to share the lyrics of an American Jewish Rapper named Remedy with you. It is from one of the most powerful tracks I have heard and its called "Never again"
"Never again shall we march like sheep to the slaughter, never again leave our sons and daughters, stripped of our culture, robbed of our name, raped of our freedom and thrown into the flames."
When I listen to this track I cant help but see the similarity's:
Human blood is human blood Death is death Oppression is oppression Inequality and racism is..... I could go on.
Palestine is not South Africa but parallels can be made, Palestine is not Northern Ireland, but parallels can be made. Parallels and historic understanding with guidance is what's needed if we are to come out of this in better light. We must not make the same mistakes and learn from history what our fathers failed to see.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by numusic on Dec 5, 2007 16:24:13 GMT 1, +1 nuart. am speechless, nothing more needs to said really. There are 2 SIDES at WAR here and war is always f**king horrible and it's always the innocent that suffer most. peace
Presumably people are intelligent enough to research the subject themselves and come to their own conclusions. Images of dead and injured children isn't "classic propaganda", it is what is it.. pictures of the innocent caught up in a conflict that they have no possible way of comprehending. Like you say, it's always the innocent that suffer the most, and in this case, it's the Palestinians. I guess we'll fight our battles regarding an unjust occupation and the subjugation of a people and others will fight theirs. We can only inform and act as we see fit. Fact is, an occupying force is always going to come under attack, whether with bricks and stones or bombs and guns. I just chose a video

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by nickc on Dec 5, 2007 16:28:15 GMT 1, Blimey, you go out for a jacket potato and suddenly all this kicks off. Not sure where to start other than I think the situation is all a bit far too complicated to be resolved on a few pages of a forum. It's clear that both sides perform terrible atrocities and it will take a lot to get them to offer an olive branch to the other. We must remember that this conflict has been going on for centuries not just since the creation of Israel as an independent state. I, in now way condone the actions of either Israle or Palestine in their acts of war but I can also, in some small way, understand why each party goes to the extreme. My MD is Jewish and has many friends and relatives who have suffered at the hands of suicide bombers and mortar attacks in their home country. However, I also have arab friends who have clearly pointed out the persecution they and their families have put up with for many, many years. We must try and remember that the vast majority of both arabs and israelis want to live in peace and do not want the threat of airstrikes/suicide bombers on their doorstep. Sadly the rantings and actions of a few is what gets the press coverage rather than the real issues on the ground. Someone earlier posted about the Turkish invasion of Cyprus but there is real hope there that a resolution can be found and the momentum from the public is pushing it forward. The fact that a new generation of Cypriots and Turks are able to live side by side shows hope for the future and we can only pray that the same can be found in the Middle East. However, the wall is a shining beacon of doom in that never becoming reality. Whilst that exists then Palestine will continue to be a breeding ground for what the Israelis (and a lot of Palestinians) hate so much - terrorists/freedom fighters. I remember walking through Eastern Europe just after the wall came down and saw what the poverty and desperation was like. Although the main wall in Berlin had come down, there were still mile upon mile of fencing that was impossible to be cut through with regular wire cutters. The villagers there still felt trapped for many months / years afterwards because of this. When people feel trapped/imprisoned they want to break out and damage their captors. It is a natural instinct.
And as a final point, comparing it to the holocaust is abhorrent. My fathers mother was a polish Jewwho managed to escape and come to England in 1942. She was the only one out of her family who survived the war. The rest of them ended up in Auschwitz and were never seen or heard from again. Sadly, millions upon millions suffered the same fate.
And one last point, off topic, what's happened to J-Boy? Not quite sure what all the bullying is about but I'd appreciate it if he came back to me about my wedding invites rather than getting all shirty on people!

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by lesbianwednesdays on Dec 5, 2007 16:30:17 GMT 1, Its called breaking the silence. Just reading the reverse (they gave me an english copy) - you can find more info on www.breakingthesilence.org.ilI should make clear that this is an excellent piece and in no way is trying to demonise Israel. It has support in Israel because people like to know what they are sending their children into - are they defending the country? Whats involved? Its easy to bring up specific video clips or events on both sides with emotional human stories - we would be here forever. Seems that journalists do this all too often. Not too long ago i was watching a news report with a journalist holding a dead child in her arms and crying. That is not journalism. Anyway, if this link works or you can find a copy, it is top stuff.
cheers mike, i've just watched a couple of the clips on the site, i'll have a look for the film and see what i can find. thanks for your help.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by johnerotten on Dec 5, 2007 16:53:20 GMT 1, things that make you go hmmmmn.
absolutely amazing. i feel so dumb for not learning more about this conflict before. in a sea of information it's so easy to get lost/distracted.
if i had money now i would hop on a plane but i don't. i will however be visiting Bethlehem in the very near future. i never felt an urge to go but now its top on my list. i want to see what everyone is fighting and dying over. how f**king real is that? a lot more real than reality tv.
thanks doesn't go far enough to everyone involved in putting on the Ghetto this year. simply amazing.
cheers from Hollyweird!

Equality Freedom of movement Withdraw to the 1967 UN resolution 242 agreed borders supported by both Fatah and Hamas (only 22% of historic Palestine) Right of return or compensation for those families or relatives of those forced to flee from there homes. too true.. seems royateel that your 'givofuckometer' was faulty in that post. should have been way over to gives a fuck..
here follows some of my random mutterings
In my opinion it is understandable that the Jewish people would want/need their own land. But the way in which this has all come about seems so wrong. One can also understand why they (the Israelis) are ruthless in their attempts to stop terrorism- they have been under sustained attack from day 1 just about. A more persecuted nation is hard to find- impossible some would say. But why have they been under attack in the case of Israel/Palestine?
To me this is the same as saying that the apartheid gov in South Africa had a right to be so ruthless in their effots to stop the 'terrorist' attacks of the ANC. But why were the ANC and other parties rising up against their oppressors?
I don't condone suicide bombings and killing of innocent people- ever. But surely people can see that the Palestinians are left with very little to fight back with.
As a british / south african- I can see many parrallels between the two countries (SA and Palestine). Unfortunately a very large similarity is the involvment of Britain in both histories.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by stuey09 on Dec 5, 2007 18:18:59 GMT 1, greeneny +1 Great to see the forum tackling the big picture from all sides. Makes the question of will I/won't I get the new Banksy print seem a bit shallow. This is in essence exactly why moving the ghetto to a more contentious location is a master stroke. Awareness, debate, humanitarian aid et al. It may be a small gesture but I feel it's simply been done with the best of intentions. Now how about having Santa's Ghetto in Chenobyl next year and then we can tackle the environmental issue?
You could have it in Teeside on that premise, there's very little difference
