Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by cannaebefannied on Dec 20, 2007 14:44:02 GMT 1, Gutted, it was beautiful, a real shame it's gone but got to see it in the flesh. We were looking for the donkey being ID'd, couldn't find it at first then spotted the black shining through freshly painted whitewash, i touched it and it was still wet, was gutted we missed that one.

You are lucky to have seen it in the flesh!

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by corblimeylimey on Dec 20, 2007 14:52:45 GMT 1, Shame, but I see their point, it's obviously made some Palestinians feel that they're the Ass, when of course the true meaning was meant to depict the Israeli security forces as being over zealous.
I can see their point about the sling shot rat too.
We've at least got the photo's, and the Dove (probably the most important one) is staying.

I can see how it might rub some people up the wrong way but surely the presence of it would have done more good than harm in the long run.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by m@san on Dec 20, 2007 15:30:49 GMT 1, It's street art ... it gets painted over ... thats the nature of things.
I can understand that the locals don't want to be portrayed as rats or donkeys.
Its the same as people who buy a goat from Oxfam as a gift for some third world village. These people have their dignity and aspire to the same things as you and me. They really all want a Wii for Christmas but we patronise them and tell them that they should stay in their place and accept their life as subsistence farmers.
I'm sure the Palastinians don't want our pity and the Wall is there every day reminding them of their situation. They don't need some smart arsed artist shoving it in their faces.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by dmandpenfold on Dec 20, 2007 15:42:32 GMT 1, i dont believe for an instant that anyone was portrayed as a rat or donkey, the point of the image was lost on those that felt offence.....where would you plug your wii into in your third world village....and of course the telveision to go with it?? some people have a little more on their mind like where the next meal is coming from...
The art was meant to show support for the palestinians and rub israeli faces in the wall....and if the art gets removed, painted over well that's the nature of things gone in an instant same as your life and your freedom if you don't keep a watchful eye over those who might want to harm you, what we have in that sense is very valuable, our rights were earned through constant vigilence and we need to continue to earn them and never be complacent

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by dmandpenfold on Dec 20, 2007 16:20:04 GMT 1, put it this way, it wasnt a pisstake of the palestinians was it? If it was it'd be in very poor taste...and i would have to send my banksy back for a refund.. the reason the art isnt on the Israeli side is because the artists would have been locked up before you could say 'banksy'.
But that is purely my opinion

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by dime683 on Dec 20, 2007 18:02:14 GMT 1, i have been thinking alot about this and read the majority of the post. it hard to grasp. on one hand you have a bunch of very talented artist going out of there way to help an area. but at the same time it is a bunch of foreigners coming in an changing their environment and community. yes, what pow and laz has done is great it has opened up my eyes and many more peoples, to the problems going on over there. putting money back in the community is great. but reading that article made me think, you and i know that banksy did not intend for them to be portrayed as a rat or a donkey. but if thats what they feel then yes it should be erased. f**k off about all the talk about how much its worth. respect to the people of bethlehem one for allowing santas ghetto to happen and two for standing up for their community.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by goffy on Dec 20, 2007 18:32:22 GMT 1, "For allowing Santa's Ghetto to happen"!! whatever that means. Some people took the images the wrong way, maybe that was bound to happen. Maybe it wasn't explained to the locals that it was in fact supporting them. But let's face it you can't please all of the people all of the time. At least they didn't want to execute him like the teacher with the teddy.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by BK83 on Dec 20, 2007 18:51:54 GMT 1, Who else thinks Banksy and co. did this themselves?.... He is the best self marketing genius I have ever seen. I wouldn't doubt that now that the ghetto is winding down Banksy and POW/LAz decided to squeeze a little more publicity their way. I mean who else would be feeding that story to the international press.....(?) I work in PR so if I am coming across a little cynical, I apologize hahaha.....

absolutely no idea, but someone on flickr mentioned it might be so the gret man can put some touch up work in himself, whilst still keeping his id intact, its on private land so should have nothing to do with the council.
but your guess is as good...

Pretty elaborate just to hide him at work but I guess you never know Could be a really detailed piece to go up that will take some time to get finished.
