I mean if you are talking about pretty pictures of kittens sitting in boots then no there isnโt going to be a political dimension but if you are talking about Art then it cannot help in being political.
Art is about making new ways of saying things, breaking down old barriers and ways of thinking in order to build something that allows you to see the world in a different light. Art is about telling stories and creating new myths with which we try to make sense of the day to day mentalness of being alive. This pursuit is necessarily political and if something isnโt striving to do any of these things then it probably isnโt Art.

I guess that's what a lot of art has become, so I wonder has it always been that way? I mean did art a few hundred years ago have so much political meaning of messages behind it?

Mary Shelly came up with frankenstien in 1816 at the same time that Turner was changing what it meant to be an artist. we like to think of our selves on the peak of some cultural scientific wave but, as william gibson points out, everyone in the past has thought the same thing.
