Beastie Boys - License to Ill - Album Cover Stencil, by Sanscript on Jun 3, 2016 11:35:32 GMT 1, So this is my first art post (go easy on me) – it’s about a project I have been working on for a while. I thought of it quite a few years ago, and the idea of it always made me smile so I figured I would give it a go.
I think stories make art – it’s nice when art has a reason. I like it when I find out what it was that made an artist create something. So I feel I need to tell a story. I might have to write it in bits as I’m not so good at this forum posting business........

Beastie Boys - License to Ill - Album Cover Stencil, by Sanscript on Jun 3, 2016 11:38:47 GMT 1, So my art story revolves around the Beastie Boys. I grew up listening to the Beastie Boys. I was 10 years old when they released their first album ‘License to Ill’. Their songs were part of the soundtrack of my youth.
Approximately 10 years ago I started to revisit their music, and had a period of trying to stencil and paint scenes from the ‘Sabotage’ music video, with Cochese and the crew.
Approximately 5 years ago I decided that I wanted to paint the ‘License to Ill’ album cover, just the front sleeve; but stencil it, not free paint it.

Beastie Boys - License to Ill - Album Cover Stencil, by Sanscript on Jun 3, 2016 11:41:41 GMT 1, When I paint on paper, the paper forms a big part of my thought process, for me it’s the start of the project. The project begins when I find that perfect paper; It’s all about the arrangement of the piece, landscape or portrait, the texture of the surface of the paper, the colour of the paper, its weight, deckled edges or not, and so on. The paper is the backbone of it all. As Banksy famously wrote.................’The key to making great art is all in the compositi’..........

Beastie Boys - License to Ill - Album Cover Stencil, by Sanscript on Jun 3, 2016 11:45:37 GMT 1, So, I discovered a paper, a paper that I felt would make a great background to my planned artwork. I set about my project. I took the ‘License to Ill’ cover and broke the image down into 12 layers. I decided on 8 shades of grey, black, white, red and blue. I re-drew each layer, and put in a good few hours each week, when and where I could, but this process still took me 6 months to complete the image (I am a bit of a slow working artist though). I printed the layers on A3 paper, prepared the stencil and made myself ready for the cutting process.
However, I then moved house and also moved workshop and the artwork was lost and forgotten, until this year, when I discovered the printed sheets amongst my piles of paper and art supplies. After a break of something like 2 years, I decided to revisit this piece. I set about making the cuts, I set about finishing this stencil.

Beastie Boys - License to Ill - Album Cover Stencil, by Sanscript on Jun 3, 2016 11:49:11 GMT 1, I finished cutting a couple of weeks ago. I aim to paint it soon.
During the making process, I filmed bits and pieces along the way. I have quite a lot of footage of my journey, but I decided to trim it down and make a video to fit the play length of the song ‘License to Ill’ from the same album.
I don’t know why I felt the need to write this – I guess people don’t always know what goes into making a piece, what provided the inspiration for the piece, how long it took, and what the artist went through during the making process. All we really see are artworks for sale, with no story behind them, no meaning or feeling, no reasoning why.........
Anyway, I’m just an artist of an average skill level, but I like it when art makes me smile, or has a story...........It is quite amazing how art can affect you........I figured that people might be interested in seeing the video, don’t beat up on me though......it’s just a bit of fun.

Beastie Boys - License to Ill - Album Cover Stencil, by Schrödinger's Chat on Jun 3, 2016 12:18:07 GMT 1, I found it interesting - and had never noticed the Eat Me before, love the Beastie Boys.
Aroe did an amazing street piece of the Licensed to Ill cover just after MCA passed.
Look forward to seeing the final result.

Beastie Boys - License to Ill - Album Cover Stencil, by Hairbland on Jun 3, 2016 13:38:46 GMT 1, I ran a record store in the Chrysler Building when this record came out, well familiar with the "boys" as they had the buzz in NYC. We all knew about Eat Me at the time, wouldn't have expected less from them! By the way, I've won a number of vinyl spin offs by kicking things off with Fight For The Right To Party - gets the room up in seconds to this day.

Beastie Boys - License to Ill - Album Cover Stencil, by annar50 on Jun 6, 2016 14:11:03 GMT 1, Whats the point of doing this .. waste of time if you ask me annar50 I'm surprised at a comment like that from someone so knowledgeable who has been around this scene for as long as you have, it's because it makes him smile, it's because he wants to, it's because he can. Some of us make art, some write blogs about it, some fill their instagram accounts up with photos of beer bottles, What's the point of doing those things? Because we can, because it makes us happy.
I find the art on beer labels more interesting than lot of the crap im seeing these days ..
