Gavin Turk ๐ฌ๐ง Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by baznyc on Nov 12, 2008 21:44:18 GMT 1, Quite an interesting thread, with a particularly well articulated point made by 'Pez'.
I can sympathize with Silkys comments earlier. I'm sure his remarks were not made out of malice, but purely made from innocent ignorance. If you don't know anything about Turk, or this type of art, then such disparaging opinions are understandable. This piece of art should not be judged on its aestheics, but purely in its concept and when this criteria is used, you can begin to appreciate the intelligence of Turk's work.
Well done to Auction Sabateur for bringing work from such a class artist to the ordinary punter. A coup indeed.

If this is the greatest piece of commentary on this scene, I will eat cabbage. It is kind of funny that there is all this talk about a brick and reading the different things that are read into it, but I can't help but think that people who love this are buying into a brand rather than the concept. Honestly, if that was released by a cheap/less famous artist would you want it? or is that the concept. I am completely fucking confused. How did a brick do this to me?
The brick is a work of genius.

Gavin Turk ๐ฌ๐ง Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by s-editions on Nov 12, 2008 23:39:32 GMT 1, Right. Earlier this evening we had a very pleasant telephone conversation with Mr Pud, who has kindly agreed to show his brick at The Babylon Academy in December. We have also bought one of Mr Turk's bricks, and we will be displaying both bricks together. We have put a lot of thought into what to call the new work which will be created when the two individual sculptures are combined. After much argument we have settled on the title "Two Bricks".
Many thanks to both artists.

Gavin Turk ๐ฌ๐ง Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by artyfarty on Nov 13, 2008 9:34:52 GMT 1, I need more than irony or a concept for me to like a piece of art. It needs an emotional response, a connection. Somebody taking the piss or qustioning what art is or commentating on our obsession with the artist rather than the art, I mean, come on, is that it? The best art that also questions art is not just an intellectual exercise. Picasso, Pollock, Rothko, Bacon all shocked and pushed the boundaries of what constitues art and are all equally uncompromising as many of the Sensation group of artists, but boy do you FEEL the art. It is moving, disturbing, upsetting, sad, horrific, depressing and so on. Art has surely got to be more than just a concept, a clever take on contemporary life or an intellectual statement. Just what exactly can you get from a single brick?

I agree but all those artists you quoted are painters. Maybe for you personaly painters work and conceptual art doesn't. Of course that is what life is like - we all connect with things in a different way.

Now that might not be a bad idea, if everyone who has ever bombed a wall somewhere put a mini 'Tag' on a brick and brought it to the exhibition and slowly built an exhibit! Class idea my friend!!!!!!

We like the purity of "Two Bricks" and do not want to add to it. Apart from anything else, Mr Pud's Mum is looking forward to seeing it. Mr Turk's mum probably couldn't give a damn, but we will try to get her along to the show anyway.
However, we do love the forum tagged brick idea and will organise something. Bring a tagged brick, swap it for an exclusive of some sort. Watch this space...

Good idea but for this show we will just ask people to bring a tagged brick along and swap it for a gift. It will have to be a London brick though.

Hence the ยฃ105k price tag.

Gavin Turk ๐ฌ๐ง Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by Poppy Sunshine on Nov 13, 2008 12:17:21 GMT 1, Just a rumour I heard from another artist. Despite numerous emails Turk has neither confirmed nor denied his purchase of the Pud 105k brick. However, another rumour I heard from a nice lady at the bank was that Gavin Turk had been in to arrange a bank transfer for ยฃ105,006.99 ( I assume this includes postage). This lady at the bank is very reliable having previously told me last year that interest rates were going up to 5% just 2 hours before they actually did.
