Gavin Turk ๐ฌ๐ง Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by mcnuts on Nov 12, 2008 17:43:24 GMT 1, Does anyone know if they are just regular bricks that are signed, or were they produced by the artist then signed? it makes you think... if it is a store bought brick, then all you are really paying for is a signature. if the brick was created by the artist to look like a brick, and then signs it, then its art!
what if they were quarters, and the quarters were not made by the artist, would it still be art ?

Gavin Turk ๐ฌ๐ง Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by pezlow on Nov 12, 2008 17:49:28 GMT 1, Ok I'll try and put the point of view across about why emin is where she is in the art world just for Heavy Consumer
Emin's work is uniquely personal. She displays her hopes, her fears, her insecurities for everyone to see. Her artwork is, in a sense her.
Take the unmade bed that was so ridiculed in the tabloid press. This wasn't just any old bed with a random number of things chucked on and around it. It was tracey's bed. She was showing us something which is very personal to her. If you know someone is coming to your house and they may go to in to your bedroom I guarantee there is every chance that you will tidy up and make the bed. Tracey showed us an unmade bed a snap shot of what was going on her life at that time. She exposed her own personal rawness for the world to see, knowing that a large number of people would pour scorn on it.
Then take "Everyone I have ever slept with". This of course was exposing another very personal side of Emin's life to the casual viewer. But it wasn't just a list of people she slept with. She put those names into a tent - an enclosed space - the viewer had to crawl into it and, by doing so felt that they were sharing a much more intimate experience with emin.
Of course people may argue that this is not art but I would suggest that the emotions they provoke in some are likely to be much more significant than a pretty oil painting of some flowers for example, however well painted that may be.
And like it or not that is a talent.

Gavin Turk ๐ฌ๐ง Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by Daniel Silk on Nov 12, 2008 17:55:08 GMT 1, I guess it come down to knowing that its Art before you see it. Like Pez was saying about Emin's bed, if you did not know it was art before you saw it you might not look at in in the right way, and truly think about its meaning to the Artist and then your response to it.

Gavin Turk ๐ฌ๐ง Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by Deleted on Nov 12, 2008 18:03:42 GMT 1, I think it's safe to say if an Artist presents something it's represents Art to them.... it's then up to the viewer to decide if they're willing to look into further or take it completely on face value...the beauty of Banksy is it can be 'got' in 5 seconds as u pass it....for alot else you do have to take some time...for me Art can be almost anything that provokes a reaction, a song, a speech, a cake, almost anything why limit what you enjoy etc

Gavin Turk ๐ฌ๐ง Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by edcase on Nov 12, 2008 18:19:09 GMT 1, Besides the commentary this piece gives in its own right, which I think personally is fantastic and relevant, you have to look past 'aesthetics' of individual pieces of art and appreciate the work in context with the rest of the artists body of work. You don't necessarily have to like every piece or indeed any piece of work an artist produces, just like film directors, musicians or videogame designers, but 'great' people in any of these spheres build a reputation and profile based on a progressive body of work.
I think Turk has already done some amazing groundwork and will have a stellar future as another British artist with a global following and reputation at the highest level.

Thank Pez for taking time out as usual, you're a true gent'..
I see your point clearly and it's one that's been presented to me in the past. I respect the aspect of subjectivity and the element of expression in her work. I love the way so many artists are questioning the value and meaning of art, which was a major aspect of my taking some initial interest a while back(ie: Morons and Neate's street pieces). However, when I see a photo out of focus , an unmade bed, a list of ex-lovers etc, I struggle to find the artistic merit in it.
This is perhaps very hypocritical of me, as I myself have also extolled the virtues of many an artform based on the emotional response it evokes in the beholder. I've grown up in an environment where expression was encouraged and have been taught to always honour emotions in order to understand and accept them and achieve personal progress. If this is Emin's methodology of doing the same, I admire her for finding what she needs within herself to achieve peace and progress in life. However I still have a tough time seperating her from the other six and a half billion people on the planet and calling her a talented artist for having a slightly eccentric means of self-expression. I struggle to see how it brings pleasure into the lives of others or evokes a strong emotional reaction in anyone who doesn't know her personally. I always seem to find myself unmoved by her work and it's more this reason I dislike it. Maybe that makes me cold and insensitive, but it's a sincere reaction.

That's the whole point. Turk has entered urban art, once, and for good, and this is how he has chosen to represent himself. Pure CLASS!

Gavin Turk ๐ฌ๐ง Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by griffermans on Nov 12, 2008 21:17:28 GMT 1, Is it me or are people thick? This is what it is. Turk at his best. He basically rips its out art concepts and now he has turned his attention to us! Hats off I say, Come on! Auction Sab, how did you pull this off.
For what it's worth I think Turk came looking for auction Sab because he wanted to comment on the scene!
I can also safely say with glee that we will never see one of these on Ebay!

Gavin Turk ๐ฌ๐ง Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by edcase on Nov 12, 2008 21:19:28 GMT 1, Mine will be going in a nice purpose built glass presentation box.
I can honestly honestly say this is one of my absolute favourite purchases of the year. I totally appreciate that people may not a) like it b) understand it c) care or even d) all of the above, but I have to say some people on this thread would do better to spend the time it takes to write a post on the thread to instead research Turk and his work before commenting.
To answer the earlier question, no I wouldn't have bought it if it had been a Banksy release, as the whole power and sense of the piece is made in context with the rest of Turks work and ethos. It's the kind of piece I would look at in a major gallery / exhibition and be very impressed with, so the thought of actually owning it and having it on display in my house makes me very, very happy!

Gavin Turk ๐ฌ๐ง Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by bmjt on Nov 12, 2008 21:20:37 GMT 1, Recipie for truly great art:
1. Remove artistic value, meaning, heart, soul and skill. 2. Add future financial incentive. 3. Allow to stew for a few days on artistic forum of choice.
Done.
- In retrospect I do appreciate the message, as alluded to by Pez, but I still feel uncomfortable with it; he's still making money off a signed brick.

For me very wise words, although if Banksy had pulled an similar stunt, although its not his style, I would still have bought it! What a tiny edition though! Not Hirst like at all!

It's the kind of piece I would look at in a major gallery / exhibition and be very impressed with, so the thought of actually owning it and having it on display in my house makes me very, very happy! For me very wise words, although if Banksy had pulled an similar stunt, although its not his style, I would still have bought it! What a tiny edition though! Not Hirst like at all!

Gavin Turk ๐ฌ๐ง Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by griffermans on Nov 12, 2008 21:28:41 GMT 1, I find it quite ironic that IMO potentially the greatest commentary/piece relating to urban art has been composed by an outsider if you like!

Gavin Turk ๐ฌ๐ง Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by edcase on Nov 12, 2008 21:29:12 GMT 1, To be fair, Banksy is probably the other artist that could have pulled this off (I'm thinking also about some of the sculptures from Bethlehem last year) but I almost like this more as it can partly be interpreted as commentary *on* Banksy, i.e. people literally taking down walls to sell, the whole issue over the CCTV kids piece etc. as well as the broader commentary on street art and all art in general.
