Retna โข Say My Name, So You Can See Me , by pippyt75 on Jan 24, 2017 1:19:11 GMT 1, To me the Warhol and haring comparisons don't stand up. Partying and free love are quite obviously cool, domestic violence isn't. Anyway I'll say no more about it as maybe I don't know all the facts and would t want to speculate if I don't. As you say, back to the art!

Halo, I seem to hear it frequently, that this board has gone to shit. I've only been on here for a year and wonder what it was like before. What was it like before? And is there a way to bring that magic back?
From what I've seen so far, there are many helpful and generous members around. There are also those who seem to generally in a crappy mood and love to piss on all of the art that's put forward. There are those who chime in only when it comes time for a giveaway or secret santa, then skirt away without so much as a thank you.
UAA is certainly a lot more informative than ExpressoBeans, whose conversations generally center around flipping giclees and strange looking posters, using acronyms and words that I can't seem to decipher. Drymounting this and drymounting that..."lulz" and some happy face drinking something repeatedly. It feels more American and juvenile on there for some reason, even though there are many crossover members between here and there.
The discussions here seem to be 40% about scoring drops, waiting for shipments to arrive, when the next release is going to happen, 20% accusing and berating members for being flippers (probably higher), 25% complaining about cliched artists, 10% complimenting one another on framing choices, and 5% discussion about art/ideas.
In looking at both boards, I'm starting to think that the true art lovers might really be the ones who buy museum posters and art books, and the rest who seek numbered, signed editions with COAs, with hand-deckled edges, are in it for another reason entirely.
Nevertheless, I still do like coming here, the highlights being MET's college dissertations, quips from Dr. Plip, seeing pictures of everyone's personal art collections and visits to openings/exhibitions, notice on the rare drops (like the Hockney book), learning more about artists that I never thought I would like a year ago, the sharing of information like upcoming documentaries/youtube clips, reading dodelicquot's posts (which I never completely understand, but generally get his point - I love that there's always something lost in the translation), and I honestly get a kick out of hearing some British sayings that I only hear on Thomas the Tank engine in the US (chuffed, gutted, etc.). I also liked hearing nordicstar's raw frankness and sarcasm - it's a shame she jumped ship.
What do you all like about this place? What aspects could use improvements?

Yeah, you're probably right. I'll get out of the way and let the train of RETNA tirades continue on its path to eventual disappointment. There will be griping on the price, insults about the print (won't he do something new?), cries about missing the drop, questions about when it's going to ship, finger pointing at potential flippers, remarks on how high the eBay prices are immediately after its sold out, additional reminders about domestic violence and drunk IG posting, and then silence.
I think I just saved everyone 3 additional pages.

Retna โข Say My Name, So You Can See Me , by Matt on Jan 25, 2017 9:40:06 GMT 1, I seem to hear it frequently, that this board has gone tos**t. I've only been on here for a year and wonder what it was like before. What was it like before? And is there a way to bring that magic back?
Cliff notes version
- Forum was about art in the street, with a secondary focus on the bi-product of said art, aka prints
- In the last 12-18 months balance shifted to being a forum about prints, not art
- This commoditisation attracts traders and brokers who focus content on value to flog their wares
- The members are born again as "investors", buying said wares, before they are hung out to dry
Conclusion : this morning instead of a flood of pics from the Invader show, recent posts are mostly reminders of Banksy prints increasing by 1k overnight, or some story about - I kid you not - emergating to Canada...

Retna โข Say My Name, So You Can See Me , by Deleted on Jan 25, 2017 12:39:29 GMT 1, Thanks Arthunter. Halo, I seem to hear it frequently, that this board has gone tos**t. I've only been on here for a year and wonder what it was like before. What was it like before? And is there a way to bring that magic back? Same story 1 year ago... It was good some years ago but gonna say that these kind of posts have always been there. Great post by the way, yes you could start a new thread to ask. As for the all RETNA bashing, I don't mind the ass-eating, pussy grabbing and al. (wife beating, that's another story), it is just that it is done in a very bullshit-gangsta-demago attitude. I hate people with attitude. When Zappa sang about going anal and ramming it, I am fine with it because it is humor and done in a sarcastic way, here it is not even fun ! I was quite amused to see that Retna's best client is a lawyer Mike Goldstein - @ladefenselawyer
but of course,
There are hundreds of artists out there doing similar type art and often a lot better too and without the backing or support of the Goldsteins of the world with their rich friends struggle but live in the real world.
Commercialising street art and rich kids playing at being urban warriors is fine, flashing the cash and mixing with celebs. It does attract a clique who will always support them no matter what. They only see certain art in terms of financial value.

Nope I've been here 10+ years in various guises and I hate to burst your bubble but this place came from an ebay forum. There's always been money talk, just not at this level.
What's changed is a lot ALOT of knowledgeable members have left and been replaced by ppl without that knowledge

No bubble to burst mate, point in case really :
With the more knowledgeable folks gone, all that is left is talk of prints and their price, whereas there use to be a mix of that and some great content relying to Graff / art / shows / artists.
It's not only this forum by the way. The scene can't be fresh forever and like any counter culture it get absorbed by consumerism and will resurface somewhere else in some other shape...
