Retna โข Say My Name, So You Can See Me , by savannahsam on Feb 2, 2017 15:28:51 GMT 1, ^^exactly daveart ! I'm also trying to buy! I've wanted a Retna print for years, and I think these are stunning! The sheer size alone, (and that "diamond dust"), makes these winners IMO. An OG this size (as in both together), would run close to 80K. Not a chance these were EVER going to be $750 LOL! The Eastern Realm prints that were released three years ago, were that...and they're tiny in comparsion. I looked and saw that a set of those sold for 8K USD years ago. So at 10K these are almost priced perfectly IMO. Yes, I think every collector wishes that they were priced at about half of what they are, but realistically at that price, everyone would have flipped the crap out of them At this price point, it keeps it to collectors and galleries who don't mind sitting on them for years. And look at KAWS...a few years ago you could of got one his prints for what? 3K? 5k? Now, they're being released at 15K and still selling out!? So even at 5K per print, I really don't think these are too bad! p.s. Oh and on the colour scheme, I'm actually happy they went black and white! I'm not a fan of the Eastern Realm colour prints at all. Oh...and nobody has mentioned that "Sangria" was like 10K alone, years ago! I think if you've actually been keeping an eye on Retna's past prints, you'd realize that these aren't that far fetched at all price wise. Sangria was $15K

Retna โข Say My Name, So You Can See Me , by noirrion on Feb 2, 2017 16:01:41 GMT 1, Might look good if nicely framed but very boring for me compared to Sangria or Eastern Realm imo. Could imagine that some of the diptychs will be splitted and that single editions will be sold then. They look very similar. Just my two cents.
So good luck for everybody who wants to go for them.

Does anyone have a Rosetta Stone for Retna's alphabet?

^^^ ditto, I would love to know what my Retna says... hell, I would be happy with just the title of it ! lol
I think everyone was hoping for 5k, but 10k does seem about right for these when compared to today's
higher end print market. Mounted on a white board with a plain black frame, me thinks these will look
pretty sweet! - I can't afford them though, nor do I have the wall space for them. ec

Retna โข Say My Name, So You Can See Me , by Deleted on Feb 2, 2017 18:29:42 GMT 1, Price aside i found the image pretty disappointing - for me there's too much similarity between the two sheets and no balance. As much as retna is a total knob I actually like his calligraphy and his own alphabet always gave his work an edge over some of the other calligraphic style writers and the visual impact of some of his other prints is incredible but this at ยฃ10k ? It's offensive! Of course this will sell-out, at that price point they cannot afford to leave any sitting on the shelf otherwise he'll be derided for such a ridiculous price in the first place. The price, the imagery and the total lack of any direct artist involvement in these is arrogant & disrespectful to his fans and collectors and is a very crass (but completely fitting) move for the artist I won't even wish him luck as this is no better than him posting on Instagram 'that some mo fuckin' dicks just paid 10k so I can go beat on mo bitches and pretend I'm gangsta' .....who the f**kis Kyle anyway All I see in his prints is I, O, M and X. B O R I N G. I think it's just a style and means nothing. I might be wrong but a lot of pseudo intellectual art is very basic and interpreted as having great meaning by people who invest in it to justify to themselves the reason for buying it.
Or it could spell Chorizo?

They do mean something. He has his own system to code. I hade one of the older Nike store prints, and that one was a little easier to decipher.

Retna โข Say My Name, So You Can See Me , by Whitefish on Feb 2, 2017 18:42:43 GMT 1, "Los Angeles-based artist RETNA accesses spaces between text-based imagery and abstract emotive states with his mysterious lines of verse. Each block of text is a sophisticated system of hieroglyphs, calligraphy and illuminated script. With influences from Arabic, Egyptian, Hebrew, Anglo-Saxon (or Old English) and Native American typographies, RETNAโs distinctive language communicates a personal form of poetry. RETNAโs messages are masked in ciphers: words and meanings that are never immediately revealed, nor capable of being accurately translated. He employs ancient totemic symbologies as a baseline, overlaid with beats from the urban jungle (sourced from his background in Los Angeles, born from Pipil - western indigenous El Salvadorian - Cherokee, Spaniard, and African-American bloodlines. These diverse subcultures are channeled into his work, often accompanied (either in the studio or on the street) by a stream of ambient or musical sounds. It is this multi-sensory experience that is brushed onto the surface for RETNA: a synthesis of auditory and visual content, spontaneously manifested. RETNA (Marquis Duriel Lewis) was born in 1979 in Los Angeles. At the age of fifteen, he began painting on posted fashion advertisements and, from there, led one of the largest and most innovative graffiti art collectives in the city. In addition to exhibiting at institutions and galleries in Los Angeles (including the faรงade of The Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art's Grand Avenue location for their 2013 Gala celebrating the blockbuster exhibition Art In The Streets), Miami, London, New York (including the prestigious public exhibition space of the Houston-Bowery Wall), and Hong Kong, RETNA has created exclusive collaborations with brands such as VistaJet, Nike, Louis Vuitton, and Chanel. RETNA lives and works in Los Angeles."

Retna โข Say My Name, So You Can See Me , by Iqra'a on Feb 2, 2017 19:24:44 GMT 1, Curious if someone could provide some insight on how to properly decipher the lettering in Retna's work. I can spot recurring characters or symbols in his works, but the meaning is unclear. Does anyone have a Rosetta Stone for Retna's alphabet? I went through a phase of trying to duplicate Retna's stuff for a while and did notice a pattern. Though most of my connections were to Latin/English letters, I was able to decipher portions of his work on rare occasions. As a person who experiments with neography/calligraphy, I did notice a couple of symbols that were likely "space fillers" (ie. not have a meaning but are there for visual purposes). I mean it is possible they were accents on top of letters I was not familiar with, but part of me doubts that.
What is likely the case is that Retna has a word/sentence in mind when he writes, initiates with a symbol that he has chosen to represent at least the first couple of letters, and lets his hand motion -as well as available space- guide the rest of the "inputs". Think of it like a signature; he starts off legible with clear initial letters and fades away into scribbles with a few added/missing letters or dots to make it look better.
What I think is important to note is that you shouldn't assume his words are formed horizontally from left to right. If you look at his other works, he plays around with the organization of letters and probably doesn't always have them in sequential order.
In short, my thought is he probably assigns a handful of symbols to letters (likely latin) and has a bunch of others that are just there for visuals. But if he does actually assign every symbol or accent to a letter, then it is likely he is writing in anagram form (jumbled up sequences).

Retna โข Say My Name, So You Can See Me , by Happy Shopper on Feb 2, 2017 19:33:32 GMT 1, Very tempted on these, I'm sure they'll look awesome, but that's a lot of money!! Would people split them? I guess there's no reason they have to be displayed as a set.

Retna โข Say My Name, So You Can See Me , by Iqra'a on Feb 2, 2017 19:35:41 GMT 1, On the page: "The text utilized in this print is RETNA'S fascination with word play. Its a takes on RETNA'S name where he purposely took out the โIโ from the correct spelling RETINA. "Say My Name, So You Can See Me" is basically putting the โIโ back in his name. The third eye. The โIโ in our eye." Retna"
Only right of Retna to have a description harder to decipher than his symbols.
