And i think their explanation is a convenient fiction, but primarily a fiction. A close inspection reveals all kinds of quality control issues with the paint that would not fly in a mass produced action figure, much less a premium art object. The molds and 3D models were clearly quite good and the seams on the connected pieces seem tight with good tolerances, but the paint just has issues.
The fingerprints and black smudges are quite apparent, but even if you dont have those i suspect if you really start following the paint lines you will see uneven application and big swoops that go outside of the intended molded areas. Stuff that is just not commensurate with high end production. I presume they subcontracted the paint to a vendor they had not used before, and i assume that on this recall and replacement they will put the fear of god into them to get it right or use someone else.

I think it will be difficult for them to explain why they offer replacements in some cases and not others.
They have admitted to defects on their pieces, and offered refunds or replacements, so it is going to become easier to go the PayPal or CC route now and have them explain why the refund - replace is not applicable in your case.
