Skiing in France, by romano on Jan 26, 2017 10:44:06 GMT 1, Hi I would say " Les Gets" in haute savoie. It is a pretty village, the resort is not too big and very Friendly. For a familly it is perfect lots of activities to do, tracks are easy. Finaly It is only at 50 km away from Geneva airport. Definatly a good choice for a familly and ski biginner. Hope that hrlp R.

Skiing in France, by Blakeies on Jan 26, 2017 10:55:09 GMT 1, Can't go wrong with most places
Avoriaz and morzine are very nice
ADH and LDA are both great.
Or you have somewhere like flaine. Which might not be the most exciting in the evenings but normally has great snow

Courchevel - You super rich but prefer a more bourgeois atmosphere and shit slopes ? Megeve - You pretty rich, in good shape, and like being with Brits? Val D'Isere - You not too rich, are OK with baggy pants and cheap restaurants ? La Clusaz - You want ski, but no funds ? Chamrousse - You want sleep in bunk bed next to Jeremy Jones, and brag, and then break all your bones ? La Grave

Skiing in France, by Matt on Jan 26, 2017 11:00:36 GMT 1, I would suggest looking into Italian Alps for the best value of resort / slopes / food / atmosphere
Courmayeur is great ski for all levels, nice resort, great food a decent prices (for a ski resort) and easy to take car and go to Aoste (i think) for some good ham and wine

Skiing in France, by RoboJ on Jan 26, 2017 11:39:58 GMT 1, I've been boarding most places in the French Alps. With costs rising I always prioritise 'ski to the door' access to the hotel rather than having to get a bus etc. I also look for the highest resort I can find as that will give you the best chance of good conditions. Naturally going on a reletive budget I also compare lift pass costs as these hike up the prices. Finally it's worth seeing how much half board is. Although it's a cost up front the restaurants in resorts are expensive so some times it has made sense to pay the extra on half board. Hope that helps.

Skiing in France, by mandelbrot on Jan 26, 2017 12:01:39 GMT 1, Agree with Robo J. Close to ski lifts and high resort are the priority although the Dolomites in Italy are great. I liked Arabba. Huge ski area (superski), so great for all levels. good, inexpensive food, and like a lot of the places round there feels more like a small town than a resort . Not great for partying if that's your thing.

Skiing in France, by Deleted on Jan 26, 2017 12:18:01 GMT 1, A lovely resort I went to last year was La Thuile which is in Italy but you can cross over into France with the lift pass. Great easy slopes up top with loads of space for novice skiers but some more challenging slopes for the more experienced. Great food in the centre of the village also for not to expensive prices. Great steaks at Le Coque!

Skiing in France, by t3c on Jan 26, 2017 13:24:17 GMT 1, Chamonix no question
Huge area that caters for beginners to the seriously hardcore - you can also pop over to Italy & Switzerland if you buy the full Mont Blanc pass. I've snowboarded extensively in France and for me Chamonix wins hands down every time. I can't go this year annoyingly so have fun on my behalf!!

Skiing in France, by avec art on Jan 26, 2017 15:22:23 GMT 1, I went up to the top of the black run, and I came back down (very fast) wiped out and ended upside down with various bits and pieces littered all the way up the mountain slope. I learned the hard way that just because you can skate doesn't necessarily mean you can ski. After then, I enjoyed the snow and the alps just as much on foot.

Went for a week. Within two hours on first day had bad fall, even though on nursery slope. Ski should have come off. It didn't. Dislocated knee cap and torn ligaments. Rest of week in chalet, daily injections in the stomach. Could not get out. Flown home separate from family. Operation.
From what I saw in two hours, I agree, the scenery was lovely.

If you were a beginner the binding should of been set with this type of scenario being a possibility. I remember the first year I went at the end of the week I was finally starting to get confident and my bloody boot kept coming out of the binding. Not funny for me but funny for the other people I was with!

Indeed. I think it was incorrectly set. The instructor said the ski should have come off.

It's a shame that you got injured on your first day. I'd imagine skiing is a good adrenalin rush. The scenery is great and the fresh air too.

Otherwise I'd second Avoriaz, have only heard good things when taking young'uns skiing. This is where I'm going to take my wife and daughter this year.
Good luck and have a great time where ever you end up !

Andorra is very nice. Soldeau and Arsinal are both very nice, I spent a winter there when I was younger. I'd avoid Pas in Andorra with a family though.
