Six Nations Rugby, by Hubble Bubble on Feb 6, 2017 17:30:06 GMT 1, I know a few of us follow the egg.
Had a sneaky feeling Scotland could overturn Ireland and pleased they managed to see it out. Really a game of two halves though. Thought Hogg and the Gray brothers were outstanding for Scotland. Also thought Laidlaw led really well.
Ireland were much better in the second half and should really have put the game to bed. But Scotland survived and that, with such well matched teams, makes all the difference. I still fancy Ireland to do very well in this tournament, possibly win it, and the bonus point will be handy.
England's performance was the worst I've seen under Eddie Jones but they continue to prove to be very hard to beat. I think they'll be much improved for Wales. Good to see Haskell back in action and my feeling is that Itoje is definitely not a Test number 6.
Pleased to see France back in the game and firing. I think they'll get stronger as the tournament progresses and this win for England may prove to be significant.
Hard to assess the Wales game. They looked a little one dimensional against a tough but undemanding Italy team. I think we'll have a better idea after Cardiff on Saturday.
Got my tickets and will be in the city centre pubs by midday for a 5pm kick off!

Six Nations Rugby, by Harveyn on Feb 6, 2017 18:06:16 GMT 1, I am not prepared to talk about Rugby until we have thrashed Italy next week. There you go that's fate tempted.
We did not even deserve a loosing bonus point. Predictable from a tactic perspective which when combined with no heart/passion could only mean one thing, defeat!
Well done Scotland.
HB if Ireland will this tournament I will eat my hat, gladly. That said I sense this is year is going to be full of surprises.

Six Nations Rugby, by yobaby on Feb 6, 2017 18:07:09 GMT 1, Wrote a lengthy response only for my PC to crash...
โข It's a proper competition now instead of a 3 horse race although difficult to asses Wales as they were playing Italy..
โข England VERY fortunate to win but their superior conditioning made the difference. Sign of a good team is when they can win a game playing poorly. They'll hit their stride next match and only get better. Itoje needs to pick a position and stay there, world class player in the making IF he specialises.
โข RIP Joost van der Westhuizen. The best 9 ever to grace the game IMHO.

Six Nations Rugby, by oxfordwelshchap on Feb 6, 2017 18:19:28 GMT 1, I still think Wales are weak at the moment. Lots of our key players are underperforming. Cardiff is always a difficult place for any side, particularly England to go. I really can't call next weekend. I think the wind is in England's sails and with the strength in depth they possess and Wales under performing I think next weekend England will sneak it.

Six Nations Rugby, by Dibbs 45 on Feb 6, 2017 18:41:51 GMT 1, Watched England with some forumites after an art walk. Unfortunately missed the first half and after sinking a few caught up on the second half. England looked shaky but as always there residence shone through. Itoje is a great player in the making and looking forward to seeing him grow as a player. England did look a little sloppy dropping the he ball a number of times, but I think they will be geared up for the next game. I have say France looked strong on my the ball and although England won they still pose a threat.

Six Nations Rugby, by oxfordwelshchap on Feb 12, 2017 21:57:59 GMT 1, England remind me of 2003. Shame they have peaked now more than two years away from the World Cup. The grit to pull a win from a clear loss is the sign of a great side. I will be cheering Ireland and Scotland however!!

Six Nations Rugby, by yobaby on Feb 12, 2017 22:32:39 GMT 1, Excellent game of Rugby. Wales not converting pressure to points lost them a game they should have won. It's test rugby, when there's points on offer - you kick your goals. It's turning into a great 6N... only Ireland can stop the English now.

Six Nations Rugby, by Hubble Bubble on Feb 13, 2017 12:43:25 GMT 1, Just about got my act together again after a fabulous Saturday. My mate arrived at 0800 and we set of for Cardiff. Checked into hotel and was in the pub by midday. Went to the match and have a fantastic time. Wales should have closed out the game but, in all honesty, I really didn't see a huge difference between the teams. Both defences were outstanding and Wales definitely had the edge in the back row. Critical error in not clearing their lines at the end of the match led to the ball being punted back to England. When you're as exhausted as both teams must have been, the last thing you'd want to see in broken field play is George Ford, Owen Farrell and Elliot Daly running at you to win the game. The accuracy and laser like execution of that attack and those passes was sublime at that point in the game.
Back out into the Cardiff night and more beers until midnight. Dirty burger for dinner on the way back to the hotel and back home by 1300 hrs on the Sunday.
Was made to feel really welcome in Wales (I've had a few dodgy experiences there as an Englishman) and the game and atmosphere was all that is brilliant in our 6N tournament. Long may it continue.
Two home games to come (I think Scotland will mount a fierce challenge but might find themselves outgunned) and then a trip to Dublin.
Got my tickets for that safely tucked away

Six Nations Rugby, by yobaby on Feb 13, 2017 13:31:10 GMT 1, Hey Hubble, sounds like a stellar weekend for you. Talk about adrenalin winning in the dying minutes! I was impressed by the speed and accuracy of both sides for the entire 80 minutes. The ruck clean outs by Wales were pinpoint and brutal all afternoon, really should have done better with the ball at their disposal. Handling skills from both sides was top draw, range of passing and again the speed and accuracy of this in the final minutes sealed the win. I love watching the Welsh flankers, not the biggest by any means for international rugby but divesting as combination. I can keep waxing lyrical at how impressed I was all afternoon here but suffice to say - this years LIONS tour is going to be HUGE!!!!!!!

Six Nations Rugby, by yobaby on Feb 13, 2017 13:56:21 GMT 1, I can't see the Scotts mounting a challenge at Twickenham. They got scrummed in Paris and hardly troubled the French in the 2nd half.
It'll come down to the Ireland match.

Is it what the French call a conversion then? If so, that's my something new learned today.

Six Nations Rugby, by Harveyn on Feb 13, 2017 18:32:02 GMT 1, I am not prepared to talk about Rugby until we have thrashed Italy next week. Ready for you now Mr H... Not quite eating my hat yet. Its the hope that kills you!!!!
Better performance by Ireland but Italy were very poor.
I think its all to play for and despite initially thinking it wouldn't the bonus point system is adding a new dimension.
France deserved the victory and England won ugly again. The sign of a good team.
France in Dublin will be pivotal for us but I have a feeling we might just win that one but unfortunately loose to Wales away making the last match against England a decider for them not us.
On a separate matter I am starting to struggle with the residency program that allows players at the height of their career after living in a country for 3 years to represent that country at International level. Our man of the match CJ Stander being a good example. I just feel that it should at least reflect permanent residency rules of 5 years. In fact it should probably also only be granted to players who have actually applied and been awarded Citizenship.

There's a vast number of South Africans plying their trade in the 6N. Quite funny actually.

Six Nations Rugby, by Hubble Bubble on Feb 14, 2017 10:08:35 GMT 1, I think the issue with the recent influx of South African players (and I can think of only three currently playing regularly in the 6N - CJ Stander for Ireland and WP Nel and Josh Strauss for Scotland -- EDIT -- Scott Spedding plays for France but has lived there seven years and is a French citizen, Brad Barritt has lived and played in the UK for 10 years, has English grandparents and Rhodesian parents and holds an English passport) is that they are 'project' players. This term means they are, effectively, cherry picked from SA provincial sides and brought to 6N countries with the express intention of having them qualify for the national team concerned.
I agree with you Harveyn , this is wrong and a bending of the rules that is unsportsmanlike. I think it's very different though (and I'm sure you'd agree) from Dylan Hartley, Taulupe Faletau, Vunipolas etc who were raised and schooled in their countries and who, in this age of multicultural countries, should be celebrated as part of our national make up, not excluded.
In terms of the conversion or la transformation (something knew learned for me too), apparently it was nothing to do with the referee or the time allowed for conversions (which, at one minute, is the same as for penalties). It was taken quickly at the urging of the Scottish kicking coach, who was on the field with the kicker and who had been informed that there was a chance the try scored was about to be reviewed by the TMO. (There was a feeling that the chasing Scot had pushed the French full back out of the way to get the ball). Once the kick has been taken, the try must stand. So, perhaps the canny Scots lost two points but gained five!
Anyway. I've finally sobered up. Looking forward to a quiet week then doing it all again.

That 2011 WC was a farce, the last WC was a belter The standard of officiating seems to be improving but the rules need to be simplified for everyones sake.

Six Nations Rugby, by mutatis on Feb 14, 2017 21:35:19 GMT 1, England's performance was the worst I've seen under Eddie Jones but they continue to prove to be very hard to beat. I think they'll be much improved for Wales. Good to see Haskell back in action and my feeling is that Itoje is definitely not a Test number 6.HB (English) Agreed the win was ugly and we were probably outplayed but they all count
As for Itoje, after storming performances by Launchbury and Lawes against Wales and the fact when Kruis is fit, he should be a starter, I think that we are going to see more of Super Maro at 6, he's young and I think he will only get better and better wherever he plays. He's certainly athletic enough and gets through his share of work for a 6 and playing him at 6 gives an extra option at the lineout.
I don't know about you, but I would like to see Steffon Armitage at 7 or at least available for selection.
As commented on earlier the Lions tour should be something special and it will be really interesting to see who goes and more importantly who makes the Test team.

As commented on earlier the Lions tour should be something special and it will be really interesting to see who goes and more importantly who makes the Test team. Hey mutatis -- good points. I do still think Maro is more suited to second row though and, once Haskell and Robshaw are fit, we won't be short of blindsides (or number six and a halfs). But he was improved against Wales and got through a lot of work. I'm not so taken with Armitage. He had a good season but the 'heat' around him now is very cool, so he's obviously not enjoying the kind of form he once did. I don't see the need to select from abroad and support the policy of 'home playing' talent only being selected for England.
The Lions selection is going to be truly difficult I think. Look at second row, for example. The Gray brothers, Devin Toner, Charteris, Alan Wyn, Launchbury, Lawes, Itoje, Kruis (who, for me, would have been the first on the plane and must now be cursing his injury luck)... nightmare choices.
As ever, there will be many nailed on to go but it's the eight or nine that aren't who can make all the difference.
England's performance was the worst I've seen under Eddie Jones but they continue to prove to be very hard to beat. I think they'll be much improved for Wales. Good to see Haskell back in action and my feeling is that Itoje is definitely not a Test number 6.HB (English) Agreed the win was ugly and we were probably outplayed but they all count As for Itoje, after storming performances by Launchbury and Lawes against Wales and the fact when Kruis is fit, he should be a starter, I think that we are going to see more of Super Maro at 6, he's young and I think he will only get better and better wherever he plays. Six Nations Rugby, by yobaby on Feb 15, 2017 13:21:59 GMT 1, Maro needs to decide where HE wants to play. There's competition in all departments and that is a good thing for any team. He's an athlete who's quick off the mark and is developing some decent ball slowing skills, this takes time to evolve as not all fetchers are born with the skill. He's not a blindside when you look at who's at your disposal in the squad but he could fill that open side roll for you guys. Robshaw gets through a mountain of work but I'd have him and Maro fighting it out for that spot. Maro is just too quick out the blocks to be in the 2nd row, you want his stopping power and breakdown work at the first tackle point not the 3rd/4th. A nice selection headache to have. Armitage will struggle to get into this current squad, great player but you've got by without an out and out fetcher and are playing more of a power game where carrying and stopping power holds more of a premium for Eddie. Stroll on the Lions tour!

Ireland playing at home so really expect them to win against France (that's fate tempted). If they loose I cannot see it by that sort of margin.
Wales have been unlucky but away to Scotland means I think Scotland will edge it.
England at home to Italy so the score line will be ugly and certainly 50+ points but maybe not difference.

Six Nations Rugby, by oxfordwelshchap on Feb 22, 2017 19:19:02 GMT 1, All fair points - Wales haven't lost to Scotland in 10 years - I have been in Edinburgh for every Scot v Wales game so far and each time I think this year will be Scotlands but it doesn't transpire. Ireland seem to struggle against France even at home and France are better this year than for the last 5.

Six Nations Rugby, by Hubble Bubble on Feb 22, 2017 19:44:49 GMT 1, I think
England v Italy will be a big score as Harveyn suggests. Wouldn't surprise me to see a rearguard Italian action though. Expect England to score 50 plus.
Scotland v Wales. I expect Wales to win quite comfortably. I think Scotland have been exposed as having a lack of depth in their reserves and without Laidlaw I think they'll struggle. Wales improved significantly against England and I think they'll build on this. Wales by 10 points.
Ireland v France. Ireland comfortably I think. They're due a return to form and I think France flatter to deceive. Ireland by up to 20 points.
Can't wait. Bring it on!
