Banksy - The Walled Off Hotel ★★★, by Viking Surfer on Mar 8, 2017 8:20:03 GMT 1, Just been speaking to the wife about this, and we are thinking of doing a 5 day trip, maybe a Friday to tuesday. been on our little list of places to see for a long time, but its a big world, and this maybe giving us the nudge we need. Looking perhaps at staying in Bethlehem, and doing a bit of travelling around during our time. Will try to reserve the walled-in, but unlikely we'd get Any advice? anyone else going? Cheers
Make sure you go to the Dead Sea. One of the coolest things I did over there.
You get to lob mud at your wife too.

Banksy - The Walled Off Hotel ★★★, by Guaanie on Mar 8, 2017 9:16:42 GMT 1, To anyone going, I'd like to reassure people that the West Bank was one of my favourite places I have been. Despite the poverty and stories you will hear, I felt super-safe and the people there are just absolutely lovely and we were shown the greatest hospitality.
In 2012 I flew into Israel and then went on to the West Bank - not before the full-on interrogation at the airport in the UK and in Tel Aviv mind you. Believe me, it was pretty hardcore. Lots of one-on-one questioning and I was singled out for a detailed swab and search (I don't think they like beards...). Nevertheless it was efficient and we got there in one piece. It's surprising how quickly you get used to the airport-style security at shopping malls, bus and train stations - it does make you feel safer.
Seeing groups of young Israelis on national service hanging out on public transport carrying guns was pretty odd at first but then you do get used to moving your bags for their automatic rifles!
Anyway, we went from Tel-Aviv to Jerusalem (worth staying there for a bit for sure) and then took the bus to Bethlehem.
You will be shocked at the difference between Israel and the West Bank- the poverty is very apparent. However, we were greeted by a load of taxi drivers looking for fares. We ended up meeting this driver called Yusef and after taking us to the hotel, we agreed to meet the next day. We paid him for the day and he took us around pretty much all the West Bank. It was eye-opening and fascinating to hear his story of 'living under occupation'. He introduced us to some of his friends and it was so interesting to hear their stories. Anyway - I fully recommend doing that to get a flavour of what it's really like. You will be shocked and you will see some horrific sights but it is something I personally believe people should do.
After staying in and around the West Bank, we went back into Israel and stayed in Haifa. This is a very beautiful coastal city and throughly recommend it. The people there are very multi-cultural and open which was very nice to experience to get the other side of the story.
Anyway - to sum it up. It was scary, beautiful, strange and safe. An odd combination of experiences but certainly one I would recommend to anyone.

Thank you for sharing that! If I end up scoring a reservation at the WOH / get some appropriate time off work then might need to get some recommendations from you.

Very painful, particularly for the contact lens wearer. I went to the Jordan side of the Dead Sea a few years ago and the mud is treacherous! Pretty interesting place to visit though.

I wouldn't,t go with in a thousand miles of that area. I was told exactly the same thing by numerous people when I booked a flight on 4hrs notice to Santa's Ghetto in Bethlehem in 2007.
They were all wrong.

Raising threads for non events is getting desperate
We'll be traversing threads just to complete a conversation at this rate
I put this here as I really wasn't sure which thread to choose

The occupied territories are tense and subject to acts of violence from both sides at the drop of a pin which given what has happened in the past is understandable. Just a year after your visit at the end of 2008, Gaza witnessed terrible crimes against humanity in a 22 day full scale invasion by Israel - albeit Gaza and The West Bank are quite different my point is that if an Israeli soldier is stabbed to death or a Palestinian teenager is shot in the head, history shows us what usually next between these two sides. More death, more destruction.
Bethlehem & Jerusalem are also massive tourist hot spots and considered safe in most cases.
I always advise people to never be put of by things you have heard, be about your wits, stay smart, show respect and do your research (culture, law etc) and you will have a good time - I'm sure.
Saying all that, I have a tripped planned to Lebanon, Israel, Palestine and Jordan so will try and make this work. I will keep this forum post on how reservations go
P.S If anybody would like to read up on life inside occupied territory then I fully recommend
I shall not hate by Izzeldin Abuelaish
