NEW YORK Framers • Who do you Recommend?, by WOOF on Feb 5, 2022 16:19:04 GMT 1, I personally don't recommend framers that take artistic liberties with framing.
If the artist didn't want the frame to be painted, neither do I. To that end, the best luck I have is by walking into high end galleries/museums and asking who frames their shows.

NEW YORK Framers • Who do you Recommend?, by Criminal Mischief on Feb 5, 2022 16:20:24 GMT 1, I typically use Rooq which has 3 locations in the city (NoHo, Chelsea, and Tribeca) and I've been happy with them. For me it's convenient, good quality, and competitive pricing. I've been wanting to try Ziello framing in Brooklyn because it looks like they work with a lot of top galleries, but the location is really out of the way for me so I haven't made it over yet.
Curious to hear other recommendations.

NEW YORK Framers • Who do you Recommend?, by MattWolf on Feb 5, 2022 16:21:11 GMT 1, MattWolf I was gonna recommend Wade Maxx. Never heard negative things about them tho. I'd be interested in knowing more about the negatives, as I only have heard great things.
I’ve used Wade Maxx as well in the past and never had any issues. A tad expensive but it was also a particularly big work that I had framed with museum glass….

NEW YORK Framers • Who do you Recommend?, by Criminal Mischief on Feb 5, 2022 16:27:47 GMT 1, Downing Frames in Long Island City is the preferred framer of Pace Prints and a number of other top tier galleries. I've never personally used them. Their quote was a bit higher than competitors when I was shopping around a print job, but might be the way to go if you want the best quality.

I think opening a second (and now third) location was a bad idea for them.

NEW YORK Framers • Who do you Recommend?, by kwatis on Feb 5, 2022 16:59:31 GMT 1, I know everyone wants to find competitive affordable pricing AND high-quality, but I sometimes think that in that situation the quality suffers at the expense of saving some money. Personally, if I’ve spent more than a couple hundred dollars on a piece, the cost of a high-quality framer is worth it. Museum-standard framing will never be inexpensive but it ensures that the piece will be safe.
I agree regarding framers taking artistic liberties. I will never go this route, but just cuz Wade Maxx and others (Frame Chicago here in the Windy City) offer that doesn’t mean that they do that for everything. They are capable of doing museum-quality framing without the crazy matte and frame gimmicks.

For me personally though, I want the place I hire to be known for the thing I'm going there for.
Going to Wade Maxx, who are known for their creative framing, and asking for traditional framing feels to me like going to a Mexican restaurant and ordering pierogies.

NEW YORK Framers • Who do you Recommend?, by WOOF on Feb 5, 2022 17:16:53 GMT 1, Yet you still haven't recommended anyone. I moved out of NY and I think it would be irresponsible to recommend anyone personally since it's been long enough that there should be better options than the people I used. My first call though would be to your recommendation given their relationship with Pace.

NEW YORK Framers • Who do you Recommend?, by Viennese on Feb 18, 2022 22:47:11 GMT 1, I am now in NYC and think about trying Wade Maxx as I am in Manhattan and don’t want to take long trips with differently sized artworks. The comment about the non-archival strips threw me off of Rooq as I plan on not removing the painting from the frame to check if everything was done correctly
I have to say I am quite taken aback about the different quotes I received for other pieces (haven’t been to Wade Maxx yet). I understand that you have to pay extra to receive a high quality product but the pricing here differs extremely even among framers that advertise doing “high end museum framing”. Therefore very grateful for experiences shared!
