New Banksy - UK Election Souvenir Special, by Eton Groover on Jun 7, 2017 19:40:09 GMT 1, Ploppi? Why don't you go and do some art or something instead? It says you're an artist after all but all you ever seem to do is talk rubbish on here.

New Banksy - UK Election Souvenir Special, by Coach on Jun 7, 2017 19:42:25 GMT 1, This is developed into a bitter, bitter thread and quite depresses me. I do so loathe election times and the spite, bile and vitriol that seems to flow towards those with views different to those that shout loudest. I've lived through three day weeks, wildcat strikes and unions holding the country to ransom under labour, entire communities torn apart by Thatcher, continued neglect of the NHS and our education system by both main parties, Tory and Labour governments taking us into dubious wars and, if there's one thing I'm sure of, hating and mocking those that disagree with us will get us nowhere. We are all different. In different circumstances. We should respect those that don't think like us and celebrate that this democracy produces swings and roundabouts of government. Sometimes, I feel so much negativity on here it grieves me.
I suspect, my friend, that I have contributed to that feeling, and for that I apologise. I do get passionate about politics. I get upset by the forum at times like this (and equally the brexit referendum), and I crave for happier days. I will try to be more positive. That having been said, I do think that there is a small number of people here who goad other members, often it seems just for the sake of starting an argument. I wish that would stop.

In defence of you Ploppi, your entitled to your opinion. I don't think you should change it just because some people don't like it. If you don't like it don't respond and move on. Don't see why people get so offended by somebody else's opinions and views. Better to have your own opinion than sit on the fence and get splinters in your arse... Peace

New Banksy - UK Election Souvenir Special, by mojo on Jun 7, 2017 21:31:45 GMT 1, Nothing like socialist art collectors though. ๐๐๐ I don't get this comment? Most of the artists I'm aware of in street art/graffiti ARE staunch socialists .....and initially most of their work was collected by the very socialist art collectors you are ๐๐๐'n about. You don't have to be skint to be a socialist and there should be absolutely nothing odd about talking politics on a forum named after one of the most famous political artists in the world.

New Banksy - UK Election Souvenir Special, by anodyne13 on Jun 8, 2017 0:02:30 GMT 1, You don't have to be skint to be a socialist No, but you can't be wealthy. You have to be in the same economic position as everyone else.
In any case, economic inducements or perceived economic inducements to get people to vote in a specific way is a very bad idea all around for everyone and thus illegal.

seriously you think that parties spend millions of coin on adverts and the like for the good of their health? if politics was a game of logic we would have had the whole thing sorted out a good few thousand of years ago.

Yeah but isn't the government telling banksy not to do this super hypocritical? I admittedly know NOTHING about the campaign finance laws in the UK, but I imagine that its somewhat similar to the states in that corporations and wealthy individuals spend millions on campaigns one way or the other. That money is spent on ads, merchandise, bribes for Putin, ect. How in reality is that any different then Banksy doing the same thing for his candidate of choice? Its the same damn thing! What's the difference between a print and a free bumper sticker? They are both literally ink on paper. Its just us crazy collectors that place perceived value onto these precious prints.
Ok, admittedly, campaign donations are spent on convincing the public to vote one way or the other, not directly incentivizing voters after they cast their ballots. However, almost every campaign promises SOMETHING in exchange for your vote (free healthcare, better infrastructure, whatever the hell the upside to brexit was, ect.). Those are actual promises people rely on to literally make ends meet, and are far more powerful then what Banksy is offering. Hummm, free cancer medication or a fancy Banksy print? Free medication wins every time.
I'm an American and never had a shot at this print. It was a pleasant surprise, but at the end of the day we just go back to the status quo; no new Banksy prints, EVER, no matter how desperately we may need them. I just find it silly that people think this was a unethical move. We let the 1% essentially determine the outcome of our elections through campaign finance, why shouldn't an artist be able to do the same thing?
I'd also like to add that Banksy is the bad guy in this situation, not for offering the print, but for withdrawing his offer. So your telling me the most badass street artist of our generation isn't going to do something because its "illegal"? Isnt everything he does illegal? A hostile government perpetrated a massive attack on my country to influence an election, and that didn't "invalidate the results." I don't fault him for making the offer, but if your gonna give the finger to the ruling party you better be ready for the consequences. He just looks weak...Sad! I don't care about owning this print, but I do care that I lost some respect for Banksy in the process.

New Banksy - UK Election Souvenir Special, by anodyne13 on Jun 8, 2017 1:23:48 GMT 1, People spend a lot of money trying to convince voters that they should vote a certain way or come up with platforms and entire parties that may result in economic gain for a particular type of voter (tax rates are a very direct example, as is "free" healthcare you mention). However there is still a fairly clear line that can be drawn based on policies that may favor a certain group economically, money spent to convince people to vote a certain way and flat out inducing people to vote through "gifts" or other direct monetary inducements.
To illustrate the difference, think about what would be more effective. The free print offer or Banksy making an equivalent monetary contribution to his chosen candidates campaign fund.

I totally see the difference. I'm an attorney and will 100% concede that this is strait up illegal, even in the good ol' US of A. But my point is that 1) the illegality is kinda the whole point of Banksys artwork so why back down to threats by the government?, 2) even though it is technically illegal it has the same practical outcome as a millionaire spending 500k on merchandise and ads for his candidate, and 3) it wont "invalidate" anything, there is no way in hell a government would recall an election result after all the BS that went down with the US/France, its simply a different age were living in.
In the end, who the hell cares? I would be stoked if every single major artist did the same thing in the US. Conservatives have the entire resources of the elite and Russia doing every shady trick in the book to swing elections. What do us liberals have? NPR? If we want to take back our countries from this upsurge in right wing madness, we need to wake the hell up and start playing dirty. Its not ideal. Its not nice. But it is better then having Trump as a president. Banksy, if your reading this, stand up and show the world that if the politicians are going to just allow Russia to shape our western democracies, liberals arnt gonna take ii laying down!

*I take my ethical responsibilities as an attorney extremely seriously. All I'm saying is that Russia has declared war on the west and actually attacked our countries, and you know how the that mantra goes..... "Alls fair"! If a client of mine declared war on me and my closest allies, I'd be in one hell of an ethical pickle.

It's the Martin Whatsonification of the scene. Sterile and dull.

New Banksy - UK Election Souvenir Special, by Deleted on Jun 8, 2017 8:16:41 GMT 1, Just out of interest, whats the penalty?
has anyone been prosecuted before?
what did they get?
Oh, and i seem to remember some vote rigging happening in Tower hamlets, did many get prosecuted?
I know i am being a wanker, but there are lots of laws, we all break one or more everyday

New Banksy - UK Election Souvenir Special, by Leo Boyd on Jun 8, 2017 8:49:38 GMT 1, I guess it comes down to choosing to vote for a party who routinely use fear and appeal to our basest instincts or choosing to vote for one who at least attempts to engage with you in a logical fashion. Anyhoo good luck everyone

Results > Ethics*
*I take my ethical responsibilities as an attorney extremely seriously. All I'm saying is that Russia has declared war on the west and actually attacked our countries, and you know how the that mantra goes..... "Alls fair"! If a client of mine declared war on me and my closest allies, I'd be in one hell of an ethical pickle.
I think you meant "All's fair".
As a favour, from one lawyer to another, you will not be invoiced at my usual hourly rate for this correction
