Forum Auctions • Banksy Marketplace 🇬🇧, by sanssouci on Jan 29, 2019 23:21:48 GMT 1, Thank you all! Now I know. It was the second strange situation for me with artsy. A few months ago I was also outbid and the next day they offered me to buy the art work (a painting by Andy Denzler) at my maximum bid, as the winning bidder would like to cancel. I refused this offer as it was a bit strange to me. I guess I am not very successful in this game Never take the art when they offer it the next day as most of the time its the house bidding against you. If they come back the next day make them an offer below your high bid. Most of the time they will take it This was exactly my guess. Thank you for the confirmation.
I forgot to mention that I „successfully“ bought a signed Banksy HMV print in January at a gallery in the UK, which was destroyed on the way from the seller to the gallery. The full amount was returned, but it seems that I should better collect watches or cars

If not you could be in luck. People don't like to ship their art to a house, then wait 2/3 months for the sale and find it goes unsold. Rather than get it shipped back most of the time they will take an offer

It still had some tape on the back too.

Forum Auctions • Banksy Marketplace 🇬🇧, by sfnyc on Jan 30, 2019 13:38:23 GMT 1, Can anyone help? I was involved via my artsy account and stated a maximum bid of 35K for the barcode print a few days ago. They informed me that I was outbid by the floor, but at the same time the hammer price is the same as my maximum bid. how can the hammer price be the same as my maximum bid without winning?
I m done bidding online / artsy as well. These auctioneers place their auction on various sites without reconcilating the auction live. The result: they have different results across diff sites and sometimes a winning bid on a site is not the winning bid at the end. It is ridiculous and total bs, thus i m not bidding via artsy or any same auction across multiple platforms, as they are handled very badly / scammish....

Fully agree.
Also had issues with Artsy - Item estimate was at 7-12k - put in a max absentee bid of 10500 well ahead of the auction. - there was no other online bidding ahead of the auction (price stayed at 7000 with one bid which was mine) - was able to catch the auction online, and saw that they opened with my max bid !! - when I asked why they had done this I was informed they had forgotten to tell me this was the reserve...
I was happy to pay 10500 so proceeded with the purchase, but they are clearly closer to fraud than lack of professionalism as far as I am concerned.
EDIT : to be crystal clear this was a comment on ARTSY NOT FORUM AUCTIONS.
I bid through Artsy on an auction in the US and was not informed of a reserve that was not mentioned when I put in my max bid was in, and interestingly happened to be my exactly max bid, which they opened with déspite a much lower estimate.

If you place an absentee bid in any auction and there is no other bid placed then you will win it at the reserve, that's a good thing surely?

Forum Auctions • Banksy Marketplace 🇬🇧, by avec art on Jan 30, 2019 14:19:35 GMT 1, no. Because it seems as though, because the house knew they could receive a minimum of 10,500 for the item, they retrospectively chose to use that as a starting price in order to get higher bids and encourage people to place bids on top of that.
As the estimate was 7-12k then I think you'd normally expect the starting price to be at 7k or lower.

Forum Auctions • Banksy Marketplace 🇬🇧, by Graham H on Jan 30, 2019 15:20:51 GMT 1, In this day and age of mobile / online bidding, Ive never understood why people put in pre bids before auctions.. no matter what value.. as its inevitable the auction house will always go to this amount..
If its the lowest bid they have, they will start at that, and if its the highest above reserve its inevitable they will find a way to bid it up to the amount you have bid..even if no one else is bidding
Maybe its just me and my cynical thoughts, but id say this way will always end up costing the bidder and the auction house manipulating it to their gain
May be wrong of course, and just an opinion

Forum Auctions • Banksy Marketplace 🇬🇧, by Matt on Jan 30, 2019 15:35:12 GMT 1, In this day and age of mobile / online bidding, Ive never understood why people put in pre bids before auctions.. no matter what value.. as its inevitable the auction house will always go to this amount.. If its the lowest bid they have, they will start at that, and if its the highest above reserve its inevitable they will find a way to bid it up to the amount you have bid..even if no one else is bidding Maybe its just me and my cynical thoughts, but id say this way will always end up costing the bidder and the auction house manipulating it to their gain May be wrong of course, and just an opinion G Fully agree.
Although you are right, it’s also true that online / mobile brings unlimited options and communication, and businesses who screw their clients in this context won’t live long...
And we’ve all done dumb stuff to secure a piece, admit it, you’ve been there 🤪

They always say on bargain hunt, that you cant set a reserve over the low estimate. Seems really sketchy that they have pulled this stunt. That's the point they didn't, Artsy is just one of many bidders participating in the sale, there may not have been other bidders on artsy but clearly there were bids either in the auctioneers book, or from other online platforms.

Forum Auctions • Banksy Marketplace 🇬🇧, by Pattycakes on Jan 30, 2019 15:39:57 GMT 1, I m done bidding online / artsy as well. Artsy is great but when you're bidding with an auction house that has it's own online bidding like Sotheby's Phillips, Forum etc then why not just use their in house bidding platform, I'm not sure with Artsy but I know with Liveauctioneers they charge you an extra 3% to use them so I never do I always bid direct with the house.

Forum Auctions • Banksy Marketplace 🇬🇧, by Graham H on Jan 30, 2019 15:42:57 GMT 1, I'd say that all auction houses do it.. not just the online ones. Iits such an easy way that could never be disproved.. especially the phantom bidder on the Floor..
As said, ive no proof of that.. just cant believe it doesnt happen ( and have seen it a couple of times with people i know who have left bids )
As for doing dumb stuff... dont get me started!!

Forum Auctions • Banksy Marketplace 🇬🇧, by Deleted on Jan 30, 2019 17:27:27 GMT 1, Can anyone help? I was involved via my artsy account and stated a maximum bid of 35K for the barcode print a few days ago. They informed me that I was outbid by the floor, but at the same time the hammer price is the same as my maximum bid. how can the hammer price be the same as my maximum bid without winning? I m done bidding online / artsy as well. These auctioneers place their auction on various sites without reconcilating the auction live. It is ridiculous and total bs, thus i m not bidding via artsy or any same auction across multiple platforms, as they are handled very badly / scammish.... I've had problems like this too. I tend to avoid bidding platforms if I can help it. You are better off bidding direct with the specific auction house concerned if you can. It's a pain registering with loads of different auctioneers but you get a better service.
