Grenfall Tower Block Fire, by .dappy on Jun 17, 2017 19:16:53 GMT 1, ... I don't normally post political stuff ... but wtf is Theresa May all about?
Go and see the fireman, police, volunteers and other services ... but don't bother with the victims? ๐
... the excuse being - she did not want to get in the way! ... if you did not want to face families or it to become a media circus, you could of at least gone and visited those in hospital ...

Grenfall Tower Block Fire, by Deleted on Jun 17, 2017 19:26:16 GMT 1, The whole thing stinks. The normal attitude of we'll address the issues after lives are lost.. I can only hope the right people are held to account but fear they won't be. The May attitude says it all.
I'm not much of a royalist but they were fantastic on the other hand and you could see the boost it gave those people who's lives have been destroyed by incompetence and arrogance...
Sadly May is just another number in the list of people unfit to run this country!
I havent voted for ages, that says it all. Not one person I could justify giving my support..

Grenfall Tower Block Fire, by tartarus on Jun 17, 2017 19:41:53 GMT 1, She's pathetic. Has no idea how she should behave and then just tries to conform with what she is told the public and press have said she should have done. Desperately trying to save her job, but uninterested or incapable of doing it.
The picture of her meeting the firefighters has been claimed as pretty much fake as well. She was meeting with managers in the fire department. So didn't even meet the people that put their lives on the line to rescue those she won't even meet. Her to late to little gesture of 15 at Downing Street is a disgrace. She did visit some in hospital, but there wasn't any media id guess as nothing has been shown. To scared of the response she would get if you ask me. weird that the visit is aimed at showing support and sympathy, I can only imagine how those she visited felt about it. But I guess that wouldn't matter really, as long as the press report she has been.
Some of the stuff I have seen written online by those desperate to defend her position has been truly vile and beyond contempt as well. They have gone from defending her to attacking the residents of the tower for everything from education to ethnicity. While blaming them for their inability to get out. Makes me feel sick, and these are literally only trying to defend Mays position!
She really should just get the hell out. I have no problem going to vote again, don't know about anyone else, but it would be a pleasure!!!!

Grenfall Tower Block Fire, by mojo on Jun 17, 2017 23:21:48 GMT 1, I'm still moved to tears even thinking about this tragedy, the images of all those families screaming from their windows on the advice to stay put inside their homes, unable to escape, while they burnt to death will never be erased. Completely horrific, unforgivable and absolutely preventable. This is corporate penny pinching manslaughter at its most despicable. The Grenfell Tower was only ever renovated to make it appear more attractive from the outside, since its Kensington, the wealthiest borough in London. At no point was the residents safety taken into account. The recommended fire proof cladding was not used neither was the sprinkler system, the fire doors or even the fire extinguishers on each floor. I've also heard that during the renovation the legal fire regulations were 'lifted'.....whatever that means!
My love and deepest condolences go out to all those that lost their lives and their loved ones, the death toll is currently at 58 and is rising and is expected to for many weeks to come. Respect to the fire and ambulance services and the 1000's of volunteers that took it upon themselves, with practically no help from the relevant authorities involved to organize the chaos and reunite missing families, provide shelter, food and clothing to those that were lucky enough to have escaped yet have lost everything.
As for the prime ministers visit ....pathetic.

Grenfall Tower Block Fire, by tartarus on Jun 18, 2017 9:53:09 GMT 1, And political point scoring is sickening. Oh really. I think theres a confusion between caring and politicising. I know its rare for a politician to care, but he does and its clear to see. May has been cashing in, and yet oddly she is being let to, and its as clear to see as it could be.
Corbyn went down and met people, the victims and those there to help.
May has met the managers from the fire department and grabbed the photo op, didn't even meet the firefighters that went into the building apparently!! She then met a few victims in hospital and some in number 10. Out of feelings? was it arse, the public feeling turned on her as did the press to some degree, so she did what she thought she had to. All about self not about compassion at all!
May has also jumped fast as hell for a public enquiry, rather than an inquest. Why? Because a public enquiry can be directed and led by the government. Nothing at all fishy about that is there.

I live in a block on the 13th floor, we've recently had the same cladding fitted that grenfall had, defiantly a eye opener. If a fire started in somebody else's flat we wouldn't know about it until it's too late as there is no main fire alarm in the building just small smoke detectors in each flat that aren't loud at all.

i think they picked this particular cladding to save a couple of quid per meter. Yes our block is social housing also. We also had an asbestos survey carried out around 6 months ago and apparently we have asbestos in every room but it's ''OK'' as long as we don't disturb it!

That is correct. It's asbestos fibres that cause problems. If a sheet is broken and the fibres become airborne this is when fibres can be inhaled.

Grenfall Tower Block Fire, by iamzero on Jun 18, 2017 11:20:39 GMT 1, And yet we choose to personally attack those who choose to do this task. Again... (really!!) damned if they do damned if they don't. I can't stand Corbyn but will admit his tactic of mingling with the mourners came across well. Point scoring... who can tell? May has not come across well with her people skills over the last few weeks but to hold her personally accountable for that tower is absurd. To have to listen to idiots blaming her for the deaths of those in that tower must be awful for her... anyone in fact no matter. Decisions in refurbishing that tower don't rest on one person, I've sat in on authority meetings where hours are wasted when people in power don't want to make a decision because they know if something goes wrong they lose their job. Pathetic. This every successive government has played a part in this farce so finger pointing and riots in the streets aren't gonna help.

Asbestos is everywhere dude. Loughborough University is full of it so don't go thinking it's a social housing problem.

Its exactly who he is. with May everything is fake as fuck. nothing to do with point scoring, thats just applying a label to something in order to make it look bad.
How does anyone end up with responsibility in this? if May is too high, at what level is someone responsible? or is it all about swerving responsibility and blame? The way i see it, that culture leaves everything open to abuse as no one ever has to take responsibility. That along with the "reductions in red tape" that have led to the cladding being allowed to be used and you have laid down the foundations for unregulated and unfit practices being used with carte blanche.

Grenfall Tower Block Fire, by chainsaw on Jun 18, 2017 11:48:38 GMT 1, Asbestos was used in almost every building up to the 70s as fire protection. Don't drill into it, hammer a nail in it, break it or cut it and its fine if left undisturbed. Just slap some paint on it. Its great for fire protection.
The houses in the streets next to the asbestos factory near me have the attics filled with inches thick asbestos dust. The answer, seal the attics up, so no one can get in there!
When its cut, drilled or broken..... thats when it goes into the air to be breathed in.

Grenfall Tower Block Fire, by iamzero on Jun 18, 2017 11:59:43 GMT 1, Nobody wants to take responsibility for anything when it comes to buildings. I've seen it with my own eyes. May didn't build that tower and wasn't even in charge when the refurb took place so how is blaming her gonna help? Granted I don't particularly like her but to say the buck stops at her is plain foolish. Are we pointing the finger at The Mayor of London too... who was booed from the site? Of course not. It's clear from the last few weeks that May isn't a person to engage with the public and it will more than likely lead to her downfall but Tony Blair engaged beyond belief and what a c**t he turned out to be.

Grenfall Tower Block Fire, by chainsaw on Jun 18, 2017 12:19:16 GMT 1, those responsble are either:
1. Specification of the details of the refurb- architect, planner, contractor, decision maker at housing association/council planning department. 2. installation of the refurb bits - some poor fitters who didn't do it properly, site contractor who didn't oversee the installation properly 3. manufacturer of the refurb bits - some wrongly made or poorly designed bits
or
4. Politicians for budgetry constraints/ interfering saying it has to look new and pretty for neighbours/ austerity for the general lack of cash/ immigration for the pressure on housing, so they can't replace tower blocks with modern less high rise dwellings/ politicians for the 60' and 70's policy of building high rise, / original designer and fire regs at the time for providing only 1 fire escape route down.
Any other wild accusations I can think of ?
WW2 bombing.... so its Hitlers fault.
Any other realistic possibilities?
Sadly its happened, it shouldn't have happened, the fires should have been compatmentalised in the original flat and not spread.
The important thing now are the families and community effected first, then identifying the problem and stopping it happening again elsewhere.
In todays compensation culture, how much money from those at fault which could go to rectifying and identifiing mistakes, and protecting lives in the future, will have to go to the lawyers.

But the cutting red tape and reducing requirements is just madness for profit surely. Putting people after money can't be right. And like a said, who is going to take responsibility, it does sound like no one. And that can't be right. How can Boris not have any responsibility? again it seems no one has to be accountable. that alone means its all wrong in my eyes.
People are booing them because they have put themselves up as leaders and been shown to be totally inept.
I'm really lost in where your going with accountability, are you actually suggesting no one should be responsible? or am I not quite getting what your saying? I can't see why you would be, I just don't get where you think it should put.
Nobody wants to take responsibility for anything when it comes to buildings. It's clear from the last few weeks that May isn't a person to engage with the public and it will more than likely lead to her downfall but Tony Blair engaged beyond belief and what a c**t he turned out to be. no argument re Blair! But the cutting red tape and reducing requirements is just madness for profit surely. Putting people after money can't be right. Grenfall Tower Block Fire, by iamzero on Jun 18, 2017 13:28:05 GMT 1, The blame, if it turns out to be the cladding, should be aimed at the person that said yes to using it if they knew it could go up in flames like this. That isn't May, it isn't Khan, it isn't Corbyn or any of those. It'll be a host of people quoting for the job. Blame them if anyone but it isn't this government or the last. A succession of beaurocracy and red tape so no one can point the finger at one person.

Grenfall Tower Block Fire, by Deleted on Jun 18, 2017 22:31:19 GMT 1, It's a tragedy that should never have happened. The responsibilty lies with the landlord and the contractor and with whoever signed off the use of this cladding on the building. If the landlord is the council, then their planning department or engineers, architect would have known about this cladding and agreed to it's use on the building. If it is illegal to use on buildings over ten storeys tall, or illegal in the UK. then the council should have refused to have the building clad with this material. The fact that they allowed it is very suspicious. Cutting corners and making a profit for what reason? Collusion between the company that supplied and fitted the cladding and some people at the council would not surprise me.
I don't see any political point scoring from this avoidable tragedy serving any purpose. By groups or political parties who use it for politics or other agenda. The media attacking May only because they want to see their puppet Boris Johnson as leader of the Tory party.
The people should be angry. With the landlord, the contracter who would have known the cladding was illegal or not fit for purpose, plus angry at whoever from whichever council department gave the contract to the company and agreed for this cladding to be fitted. The police should be investigating corporate manslaughter and investigating if any corruption or kickbacks occured and the links with this company and the council.
People living in tower blocks with the same cladding have the right to not wait and start removing the cladding themselves. At the very least the council or government should order it's removal immediately.
I don't believe what I have heard so far from the council that the residents prevented a sprinkler system being fitted. It's all too convenient.
Every one of the residents who managed to escape and every one of the victims families deserves our support.
The investigation needs to be totally open and transparent and no cover up of any kind. If the cladding was illegal to use on this building over ten storeys tall and the contracter given permission to use the cladding. Then someone profited and someone at the council gave permission. Collusion, corruption and a criminal investigation. No matter who these people are if guilty they should be jailed for a long time.
