Grenfall Tower Block Fire, by tartarus on Jun 23, 2017 22:10:56 GMT 1, Seems they have evacuated 5 tower blocks in Camden now. One story about the cladding and another saying its to do with internal gas pipes!
Hope they get this sorted soon and people can get back to normal lives!

Grenfall Tower Block Fire, by Jeezuz Jones Snr on Jun 24, 2017 6:25:38 GMT 1, There are so many large scale developments throughout the world which use this combustible composite cladding. Here in Australia we've been building like crazy recently as the bubble keeps going and I read around 2600 developments with this type of cladding.
I work in design and construct and since last year it's got really strict here in queensland which is good, I meet the fire brigade during initial design (which is compulsory for large developments ) and now they aren't allowing any composite cladding. The other thing is these companies are still selling their cladding and are testing other products to get them approved quickly.
My mate works for a large bank and the Insurance companies are already onto them about all their investment buildings. there's going to have to be huge spending on making safe the facades. Just hope they start sorting it out quick and if anyone on here is buying an apartment ask about the cladding specification, fire engineering report etc. buy on the ground floor its safer..

Grenfall Tower Block Fire, by Deleted on Jun 24, 2017 14:22:14 GMT 1, I do not believe the council surveyors and architects and planning dept did not know this cladding was flammable and did not know exactly which form of cladding was approved for use.
It needs whistleblowers in council departments and an investigation to see if any corruption collusion or backhanders or favours were paid by the companies supplying and fitting the cladding to any council officers.
These are multi million pound contracts.

I would be very surprised if this is down to the contractor, or indeed the hundreds of other buildings that will have this fitted
It will have been specified
Its the spec that needs to be pulled apart and questions will be asked
Builders fit what they are told to fit, if they don't ..................

Grenfall Tower Block Fire, by Jeezuz Jones Snr on Jun 24, 2017 22:30:49 GMT 1, Good posts.
Yes the architect specifies the cladding type for planning approval, which usually says or similar. The council approves this in terms of how it looks. Then the building regulation Certifier (council or private) has to approve the product for fire, thermal etc..
Most large jobs are design and construct (design and build in uk) where say the job costs $200m dollars. The builder wins the contract but to win he has to save another 10-20m off the contract price and deliver the same building to the client for $180m. First element that gets cheapened/refined is the facades, the builder will chose cheaper cladding, fixings, the amount etc then re send this back to council for re approval (architect now out of the picture). This new cladding has to get certified also but obviously there hasn't been proper testing carried out on some of these products and they are combustible.

Grenfall Tower Block Fire, by tartarus on Jun 28, 2017 10:04:42 GMT 1, Victoria derbyshire on BBC2 has the victims on asking questions and putting their point of view over. They are getting a pretty good platform to say it as it is too.
