Banksy chosen over Turner and Constable for nation's favouri, by Dungle on Jul 26, 2017 12:49:48 GMT 1, Banksy chosen over Turner and Constable for nation's favourite - The Telegraph apple.news/ApMGSIfLTQ0qznqy3xgplYw
A stencilled image of a girl letting go of a balloon by Banksy has been voted the nation's favourite artwork, from a list that included more traditional images by artists such asย JMW Turner and Johnย Constable. Known as the Balloon Girl, the piece was originally painted by the anonymous artist on the wall of a printing shop in Shoreditch 15 years ago.ย In 2012, a version of the image was painted on to cardboard and sold at auction for ยฃ73,250. ย The original stencilled work remained on the wall until 2014, when it was removed to be exhibited and sold.ย The work was chosen from a shortlist of 20 compiled by arts editors and writers. A poll of 2,000 people, conducted by Samsung, chose Balloon Girl to beat The Hay Wain, painted by John Constable in 1821, The Singing Butler, a 1992 painting by Scottish artist Jack Vettrianoย and Turner's The Fighting Temeraire. The Angel of the North, Anthony Gormley's enormous sculpture in Gateshead, completes the top five. There were other works of pop culture in the list. The Beatles' Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band cover, by Peter Blake and Jann Haworth came in eighth place, followed immediately by Hipgnosis and George Hardie's Dark Side of the Moon album cover. Jamie Reid's Never Mind the Bollocks album sleeve for the Sex Pistols was ranked 20th. The shortlist was predominantly male, with only two female artists named: Bridget Riley, whose Movement in Squares was placed 15th, and Maggi Hambling, whose sculpture, Scallop, came in 18th place. Haworth, who collaborated with Blake on The Beatles' cover, was not attributed in the list.ย The choice of Banksy has inspired mirth and delight online, with people citing it as both a demonstration of a lack of taste among the British public as well as a refreshing appreciation of modern art.ย

rosac, perhaps you could advise or point to instructions on how to search for active threads? I can see I'm not the only one that finds this a little difficult. I've searched before in the thread search bar for a thread I know exists but it hasn't returned it. Cheers.
