Do Banksy's prints feel dated now?, by jimbofatz on Aug 7, 2017 21:03:39 GMT 1, I really can't see a smooth way out of escaping his "mystery" gimmick. At this point no one believes anything anymore and he's turned himself into the boy who cries wolf. Honestly, I don't care who he is but I think the best thing anyone who's in it for the long haul and investment purposes can hope for is he starts acting like a reputable artist. Its also starting to piss a lot of people off as he's essentially calling long term friends liars in his ridiculous quest to stay a mystery. I really think museums will continue to by pass him and if that's the case the trend to him becoming forgettable is inevitable.
His biggest claim to fame is going to become he invented the exclusive limited edition merch DROPs that have became huge cash grabs for trends. He could end up in some business textbooks at this point. Nice little lesson on supply and demand, cop and flip, pop up stores, online sales. That's more relevant than his art is today as far his contributions to current youth culture.

Do Banksy's prints feel dated now?, by Daniel Silk on Aug 7, 2017 21:19:28 GMT 1, Interesting thread.
Yeah, I'm sure many of the messages behind the images just aren't gonna be relevant or make sense to future generations, and are not gonna even be of interest in a nostalgic way. I think the scene is ripe for an artist to come along doing art in a similar style to Banksy but with more up to date subjects that connect more with the younger generation.
Interesting thread.

Do Banksy's prints feel dated now?, by Daniel Silk on Aug 7, 2017 21:58:20 GMT 1, It feels a little like artists are nervous to tackle some of the big subjects in the world at the moment. In the past when many of them were maybe only known within the scene and were possibly not full time artists, maybe they would produce work a little more controversial, but now with Galleries, Managers, PR, Social Media to worry about, have things got a little weak?

Actually, thinking about that more, Banksy did tackle a big subject with the election print release. He wasn't afraid to possibly upset over half the population by encouraging people to vote a particular way. So it was good he wasn't afraid to do something so controversial, and something he really believed in, but of course in the end it was a bit of a disaster.

Do Banksy's prints feel dated now?, by rbrt on Aug 7, 2017 22:08:58 GMT 1, CND Soldiers and Christ With Shopping Bags always seem to be relevant to me year in, year out.
I do not think Banksy will be forgotten about as he is one of the few street artists who really traveled the world and put art on the streets.
I think if a new artist is going to compete then they will need to do what Banksy and Shepherd Fairey have done and get on the streets in awkward and hard to get places (not just where they live and legal street art gigs) and put lots of art up for people to enjoy for free and at the risk of being painted over / binned quickly as only Banksy stuff seems to bypass council / legal rules nowadays. Not just putting art up on an Instagram feed or Facebook.

Fair question though, but I don't think people are avoiding the big subjects. It's just unfortunate that they are so disgustingly obvious it's hard to be witty/smart/subtle about them without coming across as trying too hard. The urban art world is probably still leaning left overall, so controversial works are still going to appeal to most.
And what is there to be addressed that hasn't been done already? Art (or "art") is so readily available to the masses now, your original concept has probably already been created and shared by some hack on Instagram.
Self-censorship is now down to - "am I being too obvious?" and "has this been done already?" rather than "is this offensive?"

I take it that you think his "ill conceived and legally dubious" comments were applicable solely to his print that never was nor would be and not some of the Tory party manifesto ?

Do Banksy's prints feel dated now?, by Daniel Silk on Aug 7, 2017 22:38:27 GMT 1, Keep seeing a lot of posts in the past few weeks with "missed the boat" comments. What does that mean? The people who love the art, the images still can just like always enjoy the work of Banksy or whoever. Things like "missed the boat" and "bitter" seems to sound like they are coming from those only interested in values and increasing values of the pieces they own?

Do Banksy's prints feel dated now?, by coller on Aug 8, 2017 0:25:28 GMT 1, None of the images seem dated to me. And for the few that may later become dated due to pop culture use (i.e. Pulp Fiction and maybe S&S), there are hundreds that are timeless.
Most of these images will be relevant as long as there is no world peace and universal happiness. We should be fine for a bit.

Do Banksy's prints feel dated now?, by andyroo0312 on Aug 8, 2017 0:32:42 GMT 1, Why does art have to be relevant to be interesting. I think any art that makes people stop look and hopefully think is great art. Things in this life we live tend to go around in circles what was popular in the 70,s was seen as dated and tacky in the 90,s but cool and sheik again in the present time. Is a beautiful woman in a pair of bell bottoms out dated? not to my eyes. I think Banksy will have a long shelf life even if at times some feel his work is dated or the artist himself is just no longer relevant. For me personally i feel 90% of his images are still very relevant maybe not in their original context but still relevant in the world somewhere to someone. Images like Rude Copper, Toxic Mary, Donuts, Trolleys, Laugh Now just to name a few are even more relevant now than when they were originally done. Some things in this world will never change wether its dirty cops, corrupt politicians or just plain lazy fat ones, obesity & heath issues or greed ruining our planet. Like most things its all about perspective, what i see is not what others may see and that is a good thing as we are not sheep,,, well most of us anyway...

Do Banksy's prints feel dated now?, by Unica on Aug 8, 2017 1:56:55 GMT 1, I can't think of any urban artist other than Banksy, Fairey, STIK or Swoon taking on any world issues at the moment. Many of the popular names seem to be going from one art festival to another painting pretty images on legal walls and churning out prints every few months. Most of Banksys best known images are close to 15 years old and all feel pretty relevant to me.

Do Banksy's prints feel dated now?, by Schrödinger's Chat on Aug 8, 2017 8:00:42 GMT 1, Apologies if this has been asked before or if it is considered derailing this thread but what do people think would devalue Banksy's work?
I ask, because I had a large record collection with lots of rare Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Plaid etc. And they were all gaining in value in the late 90s early 00s and then along came MP3s and all the rare stuff I owned became freely available, which devalued most of the stuff I had.
I suppose the equivalent would be if Banksy re-released all prints as open editions. That or he appeared on Love Island or Celebrity Big Brother!

Do Banksy's prints feel dated now?, by Nick on Aug 8, 2017 9:27:21 GMT 1, I will chime in 1 more time to add that I missed the boat.. I just recently got my Morons.. so I paid up to have it, and it's in my wall. I don't own, and never will own a flat file. I buy to hang, and enjoy Now let's have one of these guys that thinks they're outdated sell me a copper, choppers, grannies, mary, etc unsigned
With the way you seem to have caught the art buying bug since you joined these boards I bet you $20 you will one day own a flat file! I mean this in the nicest way but as time rolls by and you see more and more art you like you'll get to that 1st world problem stage of "shit, I want this, but I have nowhere to hang it". My solution is hmmm I will buy it and soon I will sell something from the wall and put this new guy up. Problem is selling stuff is hard and the file and framing queue mounts up. It's not a negative.

With me it's started with buying things for the wall but some impulse purchases kind of had to go along the way. I also started buying low end pieces as I was cautious , some of which are still my favourites, but some got upgraded along the way. Now I am at the point where I am trying to uniform my art for example I want my games room to be all old school graffiti style art and my living room to be colourful modern contemporary. It's just the evolution of the addiction I think, I put things in my flat file that most likely won't ever be coming out again but I've also got things in there that are going on walls at some point ( or so I like to think).

Do Banksy's prints feel dated now?, by mose on Aug 8, 2017 15:45:09 GMT 1, Apologies if this has been asked before or if it is considered derailing this thread but what do people think would devalue Banksy's work? Percy Shelley's "Ozymandias"
I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert... near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
'My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Do Banksy's prints feel dated now?, by mose on Aug 8, 2017 15:52:28 GMT 1, I ask, because I had a large record collection with lots of rare Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Plaid etc. And they were all gaining in value in the late 90s early 00s and then along came MP3s and all the rare stuff I owned became freely available, which devalued most of the stuff I had. MP3's killed the 'value' of my 90's techno, ambient, and gabber vinyl collection. That being said, there is nothing quite like pulling an original copy of something like 'Analogue Bubblebath 1' on Mighty Force(though I admit I usually use the TVT records one), 'Live '93' by the Orb, or a personal favorite in Nasenbluten's '100% No Soul Guaranteed' and throwing it on the turntable.
