having scanned through the pdf, I'm seeing little to no progression in fact it just seems to be the same images he's used for at least 5 years, just generally on a larger and more expensive scale.
where there is progression I only see the tombstones and the statue as interesting.
I can imagine swizille biscuits and his friends love the look of these large canvases in their huge mansions and that's who most of this is aimed at.

I assume you were replying to Jaylove since I was saying the last LA show was a failure as well and many pieces went unsold, some of them even resurfacing in this show. Instead of adjusting prices and switching things up he basically regurgitated the exact same thing and raised pricing again. You are exactly right about his demographic now..Friends and people who just don't know any better (aka dumb money). At these prices it only takes a handful of sales to put him in the green, but hey, if someone loves a piece and the price isn't an issue then there's a happy customer regardless, unless at some point they want to sell it. He had a good run but he is done imo. |

I ended up barely taking photos since there were SO MANY people and I had to wait for forever to get a clear shot at anything. All in all I enjoyed the show, some locals like RISK, Shep, etc. wandering around chatting. Very eclectic group of people but everyone was super friendly.
The whole print situation was a mess though. Whoever thought it was a good idea to create MANUAL RECEIPTS for every print or tshirt sale was crazy. Ridiculous amount of time to ring up each person instead of just getting an iPad and a Square like any other sane person in 2017 would do.

Retna -( calligraphy... over and over..)
Clean Peterson -( stabby people looped sometimes on a pot)
Stik - ( self explanatory )
Katrin Fridriks - ( swirly paint )
Invader - ( pixels )
Harland Miller - ( book covers with paint daubs and "amusing/clever" one liners )
Ben eine - (fonts fonts fonts )
For the record I like 80% of the afore mentioned artists I'm merely highlighting a point that all artists have a specific and particular style.

With Dface I think the issue is more that it feels like "meaningless repetition". He seems to be churning out his lichtensteinesque images without any real artistic intent.
He started by "DFacing" legends and icons with his "DDog" tag which made senses. Then he explored other cool ideas (Assembling books,currency, Vanitas and entomology), and then he came up with the Dfaced Liechtenstein idols which was full of meaning at the start...and then it seems he just got stuck, minus the meaning and now it seems like cash grab
He is the artist, and does whatever the fuck he wants, but a lot of his early followers will have deserted him and sold a fair portion of their collection I believe

I actually like the lichtenstein-esque style but get why some think it's repetitive. |

Depends on the artist, some do not need to โprogressโ
keith haring (just for example) never progressed as his style was iconic as hell and did not need to. It was so simple and said alot. Same as Stik... it wont progress, it is what it is. There is no point in making it more complicated as the โartโ is in the emotion that 6 lines and 2 dots can capture. Why complicate it? The LA2 collabs for example looked terrible, it just does not work when you add something to it.
Art collectors seem to think art is about diamond dust, thickness of paint and finishes - that is more GCSE art class rather than actual โartโ
Eine wont progress - it is what it is and he has made that style his and it is iconic if you see it anywhere. but he is a typographer and not an artist. The first thing you say is โthat looks like an eineโ to any circus font used. That is quite some feat.
Fridriks is an abstract painter - that style is hers and iconic like the others above. Maybe she will start adding it to furniture like whatson has, but its more stylistic and looks great in expensive houses.
I have never seen dface as an โartistโ. Richard is an ex commercial graphic designer / illustrator and really should be more adaptable in his style as thats what designers do more than frequently. They are visual people who are reactive to trends, so he could easily progress it if he wanted to, but obviously he has found this groove that brings the money in. I just hope he does not progress into book covers...

I'm just not sure about D*face, as every now and again he comes out with a decent image and so much of his older stuff are classics. He seems these days to have drifted into a bit of an artistic cul de sac, which I'd imagine is financially lucrative for him.

Was surprised to open it up and see his 'Rear View' painting in the middle. Was more surprised to see the London background on it too... The print version came with a California background so would've made sense considering the album name, no?
Anyway, from what I've seen of this show I really liked 'Turncoat' and 'Unlikely Hero'. A nice progression on his style, I thought.
