Banksy, Basquiat and the Barbican, by Rouen Cathedral on Sept 22, 2017 13:17:07 GMT 1, Man banksy sure has everyone like puppets. It's quite incredible. Cities protecting his graffiti, fans complaining if graffiti is done adjacent or if anyone breathes on the work. Man that really is his most impressive piece of work. Fact is only he can do it
Sure but he has changed a lot of perspective about graffiti and street art.
I think the thing about it mostly being his work says more about the people protecting it and thinking it's holy to not be touched. And it's not necessarily saying something good...

Banksy, Basquiat and the Barbican, by Deleted on Sept 22, 2017 13:38:29 GMT 1, I suggest everyone who wants to stop this piece falling in to the hands of 3rd parties - should be calling City of London Planning and finding out who authorised the covering up of this work and for what purpose? It's a waste of local authorities money to place security guards 24/7 to protect it, while also allowing pretty deep holes to be drilled in to a listed building without consent. I'd rather see it buffed then get removed to be sold. City of London isn't a local authority. As it's full name suggests it's a corporation. I'd assume they will go with the Barbican's management views on how to handle these pieces.

Its a corporation, but still operates as a local authority, especially when it comes to planning issues, as it a public body. Also this is a listed building as such has protected public status, therefore English Heritage will need to be consulted in regards to changing its appearance or any works to it - the Barbican is owned and managed by the City of London Corporation, so the Barbican Centre in essence take steer from them. What I think is not clear is, who is covering the pieces, is it Bankrobber as previously suggested, if so what arrangement do they have with the City of London Corporation or is it the latter and what is their purpose in doing so.

Banksy, Basquiat and the Barbican, by medichead on Sept 22, 2017 14:00:55 GMT 1, The important thing for me is that they have been covered and will be preserved for many to enjoy for years to come. They won't be tagged over (apart from that plagiarist Minnick) or chiselled out.
Yes, that's not exactly the spirit of street art, but sometimes we are given something so brilliant it would be sad to see it disappear.

Why shouldn't the adjacent work be protected too?
At least if they are going to protect it that are doing it right.

Banksy, Basquiat and the Barbican, by illicey on Sept 22, 2017 15:19:56 GMT 1, because the adjacent work looks terrible? To you. Plenty of banksy works haven't been great too. Do those deserves to be saved? In reality due to the nature of the medium many great works by Banksy (and others) have been destroyed, lost or through whatever reason ceased to be gone forever. Shame or no Shame. Everyone gets that, street art right?--why should Banksy works be judged different to the next person in the street? Under the premise of where this medium began, the beliefs behind it and the fact that street art is street art, fair enough let things be eroded by nature or through human nature. However, like it or don't like it, Banksy has propelled himself above the common wall and for those that believe in evolution, protection of history and treating everyone fairly but not equally, is it not obvious why you would want to preserve one over another? If you could go back in time and plexi a Haring or Basquiat in a subway, IMHO you would. I get swimming against the tide but surely you would. Maybe I like 'history' and 'art' too much and am biased but with this artist and this movement you can't argue against both of these factors.

Skip's personal opinion is..." After the spraying..what ever happens next is part of the works history/cycle. I dont think Banksy et al give a flying fishes you know what if its mashed or saved. I think this is the same for anyone putting non permission pieces out - I imagine half the joy is seeing how long it lasts and what happens next. The last time I was pi**ed as maggot in a barrel of cider, I didn't ring up my Dingo chums and discuss the ins and outs of my hangover, that said , Im not pi**ing on anyones BBQ, just thought I'd put it out there like a Dingo in a mixed kennel"

How hard is it?
It was clear from his initial Instagram posts. โMajor new Basquiat show opens at the Barbican โ a place that is normally very keen to clean any graffiti from its walls.โ
โPortrait of Basquiat being welcomed by the Metropolitan Police โ an (unofficial) collaboration with the new Basquiat show.โ
Nothing more than irony and a tribute.

But what's the motivation. I don't think it comes down to what I want.
I think you need to take into the account the medium and the history. What made street art and banksy so great is now gone. It's a shame.
Honestly I'd love to see a basquiat or haring in a subway. But that would go entirely against what and why haring or basquiat made the Work in the first place. Viewing that work 30 years later under a piece of plexi loses the whole purpose and meaning of the art and the movement.
Sure you can argue the movement and the art has changed and now these things should be treated as work like in a gallery. But then the point to that would be that it's no longer street art. It's no longer graffiti. The whole meaning is changed.

True, however the world changes and people change but there is always a future generation that is interested in history and pioneers before them. Richter destroyed some of his paintings and in some parts regrets his early actions. Many early thoughts and beliefs evolved, morphed and changed into something different to the beginning belief and became great and progressed life. Most old people look back at their early days and think they made mistakes and some beliefs were wrong. In my opinion that's not a bad thing that's evolution and that's what makes this special. Clearly I can't be sure that Haring or Basquiat posthumous would want their early works plexied. However, I am pretty confident that if it was a yes / no decision now on behalf of the people, it would be a clear yes.

If any lesser known artists did the same thing, a few would say obsessed with Basquiat, jealous that Basquiat art has museum and art world recognition, wants to be in the same position. Others might say, it's Banksy generating publicity for the Basquiat show. Subliminal advertising. Ticket sales for Basquiat show, the art world art circus big wheel money go round critique. It's all a bit Dismaland.

Sure you can argue the movement and the art has changed and now these things should be treated as work like in a gallery. But then the point to that would be that it's no longer street art. It's no longer graffiti. The whole meaning is changed. Motivation, lots of publicity. Early Banksy, anti establishment. Today part of the establishment, urban decoration for the masses.

Banksy, Basquiat and the Barbican, by Unica on Sept 22, 2017 15:52:35 GMT 1, Man you guys crack me up. Why shouldn't the adjacent work be protected too? At least if they are going to protect it that are doing it right. Because its s**t.

Banksy, Basquiat and the Barbican, by moron on Sept 22, 2017 16:00:26 GMT 1, Hopefully it will be left in place. (for the duration of the basquiat show at least) The image works well and no harm done. I guess it depends on if the city of London authority views the art as political or not with references to black lives matter and stop and search and racial profiling.

Yeah but if it was by banksy it would be great!
How do we know it wasn't banksy coming after the fact and adding it?
How do we know banksy didn't coordinate it with him? Maybe banksy asked him to do it. Does that make it great now?
Hey they are protecting it so maybe they got word from banksy that it should be protected. Let me guess now that banksy says it's good it's good!!!!

We know who it's by and the rest of his work is identical rip offs of Keith Haring's style.
