Bitcoin, by alexdb on Nov 28, 2013 11:37:42 GMT 1, T3C, what I meant is that once this bitcoin becomes a monetary currency (and my understanding that is the purpose, right?), the value will decrease since a monetary currency is relatively fixed and has a marginal bandwidth.
However, currently, yes the price may rise, but also may fall since it is just speculation. There is no real technical analysis or economic analysis for this fluctuation. The chinese may go crazy, but I have lived for a couple of years in China, and stock trading was mostly done by the elderly. And chinese love to gamble and perhaps they see this just as a gamble and not a serious investment.
Personally I dont see this as an investment, I see it as fun and yes, you can make some money out of it.

Bitcoin, by maxf on Jan 29, 2014 15:41:42 GMT 1, Thats the issue - the market is incredibly immature and unregulated. Try converting them back to cash and you suddenly find yourself dealing with small brokerages with low trade limits. Depends how many you have as to whether thats an issue though I guess.
Wish I'd bought a load when a friend excitedly told me about this 'new currency' which was a 'sure fire bet' - I'd have a few original Banksy pieces now!

Bitcoin, by Sliding on the Walls on Sept 18, 2017 15:12:30 GMT 1, I thought I'd start a thread about Bitcoin and other crypto currencies, seeing as the past couple of weeks have been pretty interesting.
First of all, China's central bank banned ICOs which had an effect on Bitcoin. There were rumors China would try and ban crypto currencies all together. This caused it to drop to a 90 day low.
Last week JP Morgan's Jamie Dimon went on record saying that it is a fraud, a pyramid scheme, worse than tulip bulbs and will blow up.
There are rumors that JP Morgan have since invested a lot into bitcoin, implying the statements were released in the hope of lowering its value in order to buy in at a low price.
Today, Bitcoin has surged to over $4,000 but it is still off the $4,522 all time high.
What are people's thoughts?
Do you have any stories, any crypto currencies you think might follow in Bitcoin's footsteps? Perhaps this thread could be the place to share information.
I know there is another thread called 'If you had $10,000 to spend' which kind of turned into a thread about bitcoin etc... but I didn't want to keep hi-jacking that thread and I apologize if there is already a crypto thread which I have overlooked.

Bitcoin, by kharupt on Sept 18, 2017 15:26:08 GMT 1, I feel like all of this bad press is to lower btc's price. When low enough those institutions buys in bulk like JP Morgan. A bit like the anti hype in this forum.
Bitcoin's all time high is actually $4,928. I'd keep an eye out for litecoin and ethereum. I have NEM and OMG. They look to be solid altcoins.

Bitcoin, by RoboJ on Sept 18, 2017 21:31:22 GMT 1, Crypto has taken a hammering which is odd because the whole point of it being decentralised was so decision such as the one China just made are supposed to have no effect. This just shows that those with Bitcoin are largely made up of mainstream investors now rather than those who believe in the fundamentals of Bitcoin. I have a small amount of ethereum. If you think the price of a banksy jumps quick, try crypto! Although it plummets just as fast too haha

Jamie Dimon should be locked up.

If you think the price of a banksy jumps quick, try crypto! Although it plummets just as fast too haha Yes so very odd that the price dropped, it's almost as if market makers used news to drive price down after millions of uninformed investors FOMO bought BTC. In a market with fixed supply, rapid increases in demand drive price exponentially higher. This momentum can not be maintained indefinitely and so as demand wains price falls. The time to buy BTC for this cycle was over a year ago, the risk reward right now is appalling over medium timeframes. 99% of BTC trades have happened under $1300 if you are investing money now then you are at best trying to catch the tail end of a bull run and you will get REKT.
That's a lovely chart. I enjoyed your peice on the Bitcoin cycle. Are you suggesting Bitcoin is not in its infancy in terms of global adoption?
Why would anybody be trying to catch the tail end of a bull run? Unless they were selling. And at best!?

It would be interesting to see if the hype that you quite rightly mention is as large as you may think. I was talking to a casino manager last week and I asked if they had considered accepting Bitcoin as a form of payment, he didn't know what I was talking about.
We may find that the wave which you mention is merely a ripple right now.

Why would anybody be trying to catch the tail end of a bull run? Unless they were selling. And at best!? No that's actually exactly what I'm suggesting. People's expectations are way ahead of reality at the moment. People are buying bitcoin with no real understanding of what they are buying, why they are buying it, or with any time frame context to the investment. They are buying it because they heard their friends made money. They are buying hype. Bitcoin (with a capital B) is a protocol, it's a technology. A really f**kingbeautiful technology at that. Tech adoption comes in waves. We are in a wave right now, this wave may keep going higher or it may crash back down without making a new high over $5k. My point is you buy at the bottom of the wave not near or at the top of it - that's where you sell.
No sh#t sherlock regarding your "waves". I wish "people" knew that you are supposed to buy when it's low and not when it's high. But people are so stupid aren't they? Buying something and not knowing why. Luckily, you're smarter than people. Phew.
