Da Vinci, Salvator Mundi, by mose on Oct 11, 2017 17:27:29 GMT 1, I hope this ends up in a museum and not some super rich collectors private home!
I'd think it will go like the last private collection version of 'The Scream' did. It will be purchased by a rich collector, lent out frequently, and donated to an institution upon death.
What I find very interesting about this piece is the attribution. Still to this day, there is some debate about it being attributed solely to the master.
Here is a great discussion of some concerns: twooldliberals.com/2012/04/14/salvator-mundi-a-priceless-leonardo-or-a-fake/
All-in-all, in my slightly-but-not-educated-enough opinion, I don't see this topping the $119.9 million 'The Scream' went for. The current market may be spooked by the recent Bacon fail, the attribution issues will never go away 100%, the image being largely unknown, and global financial + political issues and I think you have the recipe for a let-down.
That being said, it only takes two, out of the entire world, to drive up the auction price.

Da Vinci, Salvator Mundi, by moron on Oct 11, 2017 17:50:06 GMT 1, Money and art authenticators never mix. If some working class guy walked into Christies or other major saleroomwith that under their arm saying saying they found it in their grans attic when she died. No way would their experts say it's by Da Vinci.
I thought Cezannes card players was the most expensive painting sold via a saleroom transaction (private sale?)

Anything is possible. I'm sure there have always been copies painted including in Leornados time and sold to wealthy buyers.

Da Vinci, Salvator Mundi, by gd79 on Oct 11, 2017 18:21:42 GMT 1, Raises the question.... What will be the first piece to hammer at >200mn. If football transfers are anything to go by, it could be one big leap from the current auction record. I was thinking about this question a couple of weeks back, and my first though was a Da Vinci, given the scarcity. Then I saw this. It's possible....

Interesting article. I do find the work to be quite bizarre at places as noted. But to think he drew a line down the middle and did exactly half is also quite bizarre.
Either way it does appear too good to be true.

Very true. I think this could go for mug for then the estimated 100 mil.
As for others I would think if any vermeers came up. I think one sold for 40 mil over a decade ago.

Da Vinci, Salvator Mundi, by chevyav53 on Oct 11, 2017 18:58:52 GMT 1, I find it interesting that Sothebys helped authenticate this after it was long thought to be a student of Da Vinci's. It has also been repainted.
Now I get it, you are a billionaire and need to show off or compensate but this is what is wrong with the world when people are dying due to starvation but we can pay $100+mil on a painting that may not even be a Da Vinci.... little vent there at the end

If football transfers are anything to go by, it could be one big leap from the current auction record. I was thinking about this question a couple of weeks back, and my first though was a Da Vinci, given the scarcity. Then I saw this. It's possible.... Its a fascinating question. A few works have sold privately for over $200million. A Pollock, a de Kooning, a Gauguin. I don't know there is much of a reason to go to auction that high when private sale is quieter and likely less expensive.
Thinking of auction, the first thing to pop into my head would be a major Twombly cycle. Something like Lepanto, Nine Discourses on Commodus, Quattro Stagioni, Coronation of Sesostris, Fifty Days at Iliam, etc. Most are locked away in museums. Sesostris is in the Pinault collection, so it could conceivably emerge at auction.
A major Jasper Johns, if there is one in private hands(I can't afford the raisonne right now, so can't verify), would be another consideration. Johns, in a 60+ year career, has only made around 400 paintings.
de Kooning's 'Woman III' sold privately for $137.5 million in 2006. It would likely break $200 million if it came up now.

though having wrote that, does that only work out around 5% ROI?

Da Vinci, Salvator Mundi, by Pattycakes on Nov 16, 2017 3:13:21 GMT 1, and it's news, but really it isn't much more. For someone it's big time bragging rights, half a billion if you have billions - frankly it's change. Sad really everything has a number. I sort of wish things didn't, but it's clear they do, perhaps this is the death of art, getting to the point where we simply cannot go beyond - I hope anyway.
