That's speculation. Could be any billionaire or corporation or consortium or syndicate.
Bill Gates is in a position to where can afford this painting.
But given his recent charitable causes, indulging in a painting of considerable value seems excessive by comparison.

If they pay. Remember the days of the Hirst auction, after two years some buyers had not settled. Also the Chinese porcelain record breaker at a regional auction house. They never paid. And not to forget the Chinese fellow that bid on two of the zodiac heads from the Yves Saint Laurent auction. He refused to pay too.

Da Vinci, Salvator Mundi, by moron on Nov 17, 2017 16:11:59 GMT 1, I think this painting will divide opinion for a long time or if one day another better Salvator Mundi by Leonardo is discovered in some obscure place.
Da Vinci painted hands better than the left hand holding the globe in the painting sold by Christies. Da Vinci also painted peoples eyes looking leftwards or right. This painting the eyes look cross eyed. The eye lids and other parts look amateurish compared with Da Vinci. Plus the shape of the head doesn't look similar to the way Da Vinci painted. Apart from all that the painting looks over cleaned.
This article states the restorer: "Modestini then professionally restored the Salvator Mundi. Despite some damage to the face, the flesh tones fortunately retain their layer structure. She stabilised the picture, removed most of the later overpaint and fillings, and made cosmetic changes to bring it back closer to Leonardo’s original." theartnewspaper.com/news/christies-releases-condition-report-for-leonardos-salvator-mundi
Since when does a restorer make cosmetic changes?
Personally I would not be surprised if it is either a later copy of an engraving based on Da Vinci's Salvator Mundi. Where this painting has some major differences to the engraving and where an engraver who copied a painting would have made the engraving exactly the same as the painting the engraver was working from.
Or if it was painted by someone like Andrea Salai or another artist during or after Da Vinci died.
There were many artists students of Da Vinci and who came after Da Vinci who painted in a similar style to Da Vinci. The pigments and wooden panels remained the same for a long time after Da Vinci died.
Restored with cosmetic changes.
Andrea Salai
A good article here about this paintings sale and ongoing litigation. Somehow I think regarding this painting there is more to come.

Da Vinci, Salvator Mundi, by moron on Dec 7, 2017 13:02:39 GMT 1, Apparently they are paying it off in six instalments. I wonder why? Interestingly enough 450 mil is about the same price they paid France to use the Louvre name. So behind all this stuff what exactly are these arabs buying? Art or a certain influence and acceptance of their ideology in the west?

Da Vinci, Salvator Mundi, by andyroo0312 on Dec 8, 2017 8:45:07 GMT 1, It was a minor Saudi Prince that brought this painting and because he is close to the Abu Dhabi crown prince the painting is stopping off at their version of the Louve before going to a wall in a Saudi Palace. I think doing this will not make him a lot of friends in the Muslim world as it is haram and general very much frowned apon to have any pictures of a prophet and Jesus is seen as a prophet in Islam. Normally pictures like this would be destroyed or hidden in the palace basement....
