Banksy in Palestine ๐ต๐ธ, by wisky on Mar 19, 2017 19:23:20 GMT 1, You want a debate but throw in ism's to halt other people opinions, to call someone a neo nazi because of a generalisation is ludicrous!
To me, you sound anti muslim.....
What is your angle? what do you want? what are you hoping to achieve from this thread?

Banksy in Palestine ๐ต๐ธ, by Deleted on Mar 19, 2017 21:12:57 GMT 1, Palestine is heralded as a worthy cause by unconnected, British artists because liberals place Muslims at the top of the victimisation hierarchy; thus it has become the cause celebre of the left. It's incredible how so many people write rambling non fact based responses, attack me for zero reason and ignore my initial question. I just keep having to respond to unrelated stupid points instead of hearing actual responses to the real question. A few of you have actually tried to engage the question by stating- this cause likely calls to banksy in some way. Maybe he is arab or his wife is etc. he has a linkage to it. I think that's a reasonable answer. But what about straight British artists that have zero link? Seems money grab no? FYI that image of scale is stupid. US has given Palestine 5bln in aid as well. Why is that excluded if not to be unfactual. We seem to be ignoring facts and the intital question because the answer seems too ugly. I certainly do not place muslims anywhere near the top or anywhere in the victimisation hierarchy.
I have always supported by peaceful means and negotiations the end of the oppression of the Palestinian people by their own government Hamas and by the Israeli government.

Banksy in Palestine ๐ต๐ธ, by Fake on Mar 19, 2017 21:17:10 GMT 1, When I wrote, "media is largely controlled by Jewish Americans," I believe that may have just come from a quick google search, which now in researching again may have been written by illegitimate sources. My mistake. It was not an anti-Semitic statement, nor was it intended to be interpreted that way. I could care less what race/creed/religion owns the media. The point was that the media clearly has biases and does not cover certain subjects, including those other world atrocities that you linked to. That in turn leads to what the masses/artists are informed about and the subjects they might create art about. That was my hypothesis to try and explain your 'honest question.' But based on your steaming vitriol regarding that statement, you clearly have other aims in posing your question as others have mentioned and are not looking for an answer to your question. Perhaps only you know the answer to your question and are dying to share it with us? Some recommended readings: Manufacturing Consent by Noam Chomsky, The End of the Peace Process by Edward Said, and The Case for Israel by Alan Dershowitz. Recommended Alternative News Sources: Democracy Now, Znet I just think that racism has no place in this topic and saying "Jews control the media" is about as neo nazi as it gets. Again I'm not Jewish. My whole point in all this is truth. I think there are so many non truth driving this
Artists are creating art to draw the attention to this issue. And you know what!? They just succeeded and used YOU as a vehicle to do so. YOU just became part af a Banksy installation! Congrats!

Banksy in Palestine ๐ต๐ธ, by Deleted on Mar 19, 2017 21:25:07 GMT 1, E.L.K the Australian artists makes art in Syria. he has an expo.
Stik raised money for a hospital. He sells prints.
Gonefellow raised money for the PDSA. He sells prints.
Musicians made records and performed at Live Aid and Band Aid.
Protest artists like the Gorilla Girls made art to protest. Not to sell prints.
Other artists have made protest art.
Judging whether an artist also raises their own profile by getting involved in making art for charity is not constructive. I should hope they do raise their profile and thats down to instant media today.
I think which one gets the most publicity is down to the media looking for a good story in order to sell papers etc and nothing to do with which cause is more deserving.
PLus of course when there are magazines like Time Out etc. One photo can raise awarness globally. Which is probably why artists decide to get involved in causes they feel personally the most for.

Again I'm not Jewish. My whole point in all this is truth. I think there are so many non truth driving this I don't know if "Control" is the right word, or whether any of them are in any way motivated by politics, but it's not racist to point out that a large number of CEOs or top executives of the top US media companies are Jewish. Or at the very least that proportionate to the overall population (that you pointed out) they do extremely well.
Calling someone racist just for making a suggestion about why the media might be biased towards news about Israel and Palestine, rightly or wrongly, is ridiculous.
You asked a question based on assumptions and bias in the first place, and frankly people are humouring you by even trying to offer answers.
>>>This is probably not a topic for this forum, as we've seen this type of discussion go badly downhill before. So perhaps lets all stick to facts, and not opinion <<<

Banksy in Palestine ๐ต๐ธ, by nex on Mar 19, 2017 22:56:44 GMT 1, I see many comments on this board talking about the great work artists do for Palestine. From tagging a wall, to setting up a hotel and bringing spotlight to the region. I think the topic might be the most discussed humanity concept on this board by a factor of 1000x. It would be super insightful to hear the art communities take since we are the buyers and consumers. Keep in mind i am not Jewish. I HAVE traveled to both places and have spent real time there. I also dont want this to get insane and blabberish. Try and shine a light on this for me because I simply dont get it. A few thoughts that dont click in my head that I have always wanted to make sense of in relation to art and this causeโฆ Israel- its imperfect. Building crap houses on disputed rock piles. Agro military like police is an issue. Lets keep in mind it was founded 5k years ago so itโs nothing new. These peeps have been in the same tiny area before there were Christians, Muslims, Buddhistsโฆ. Also, Jews have basically been eliminated from the planet with roughly 13 million left. They have never really been safe anywhere aside from the USA from attack or genocide be it from Spain to Germany. Probably the most persecuted people on the planet by a factor of 1000x. Keep in mind 13mm/7.5bln means jews are .001% of the world population. Flip side, there are 450 million Arabs and the population grows not shrinks, with 22 nations. Ample space and natural resources, wealth. All the ability in the world to make the lives of Palestine better overnight. Now for the nature of things. Art embraces acceptance right? the odd? gay rights maybe? womens rights? minorities (like those that make up .001% of the world?) Dont think i need to highlight the difference for a womens freedom between these 2 societies, or for a gay person. Of which i am neither. Yeah, think i have a clear opinion or bias. i will admit this and i do not want to start some firestorm of hatred. What I do want is for the art world to explain why this is, of all the problems on our planet, the one art likes to hug? How am i so misaligned form the art world that I generally love? educate me please. What I really want to know, is why artists pick this topic of all on the planet 9 out of 10 times? does it sell prints? is it a safe and easy that looks dangerous? can look like its front lines but really its safe place to be risky from? why not pick one of these----- genocidewatch.net/alerts-2/new-alerts/Explain why the central African republic has never and will never be in a print anyone quotes or โlikesโ on Instagram from Banksy? 5,186 people have died in Central African Republic since fighting between Muslims and Christians started in December. That is about the number of Palestinians killed since second intifada in 2000. And we must think some of those were militarized right? Not saying thos ethat have died anywhere are not important. Simply trying to understand the extreme focus. I want to understand why ART, forget media or other orgs that have own financial and political motivations. Picks this topic for its prints, stunts, charities? What I hope this discussion can bring out is an answer to why this topic engages the ART world (not uni student world) more than say, Somali genocide taking place now. No need to site more facts about this specific conflict. Explain why it is the art worlds darling over much more dire situations. Not who is right or wrong. That will be debated for eternity it seems. But specific to this forum, why is art all about this topic. If the world simply doesnโt like Jewish people, itโs an answer. Not a great one, but at least it answers my question. As a side topic am very interested how female artists, or gay artists feel. Not just white dudes.
I had to go back and read the original post to remind me why everyone should leave this thread alone, read again people, one point being is made and one point alone. There's a clear subtext that to me at least is unpalatable.
Conor would hate to know you're a fan.

I think there are so many non truth driving this ... no place for racism ... says the man asking 'an honest question' but believes that Muslim women dress in black bin bags with slits ...
'why is anyone tolerant of a society that calls for religious law, keeps women in black bags with slits for eyes'

Happy. So what's the answer?
So when the hotels closes that art is staying in the community? Is it going to be a museum?

Banksy in Palestine ๐ต๐ธ, by ricardob on Mar 20, 2017 2:44:30 GMT 1, Building a hotel/installation in Somalia wouldn't be effective in bringing awareness to the issues faced there because no one in its good mind would go for a holiday there because it is very very dangerous. When you have a gun pointed to your head it is not funny, not a game... I speak as someone who had one pointed to my head a few times.

Banksy in Palestine ๐ต๐ธ, by thomasmer on Mar 20, 2017 3:43:45 GMT 1, I agree with one aspect of this, but a key detail is missing. Muslim women are the most abused group in the world. Let's all try sitting our lives in 120degree sun with a black cloak on. Metal cage over face. Thats just not true is it.
You werent asking a very 'honest question' were you really.

FYI that image of scale is stupid. US has given Palestine 5bln in aid as well. Why is that excluded if not to be unfactual. We seem to be ignoring facts and the intital question because the answer seems too ugly.
Please review the numbers and give annual stats or a 4 year average comparing the two. Also please cite whether the aid is humanitarian aid or military aid - there is a clear difference and intent for the types of aid provided.

Banksy in Palestine ๐ต๐ธ, by Iqra'a on Mar 20, 2017 4:38:30 GMT 1, It was entertaining to see the progression of this thread.. interesting opinions
Anyways just felt the need to kind of sneak in a word:
I'm Arab, born and raised, and have even spent nearly a decade in Saudi Arabia. I am a practicing Muslim too. All I can say about most of us is that we're pretty chill. We smoke our hookah and eat with our hands and watch a lot of football. There is a kind of unspoken separation between genders in gatherings but that is mostly due to cultural reasons rather than an enforced law due to religion (except in Saudi - Saudi is run by some interesting people). And in parts like Bahrain, Qatar, UAE, Kuwait, Lebanon, and Morocco the separation is almost nonexistent. In none of these countries are women required to be dressed in the cultural black attire though it is worn by those that are a bit more traditional. Anyways, the point is our opinions/way of life isn't that different if you simply take the norm into account. We believe women need more equal rights and realize that our laws need to be updated, but as we don't operate under a full democracy, it is a little hard to motivate change from upper management. We also have no problem with the Jewish people claiming right to their own state but we really wish it didn't have to happen at the expense of an already-established country. We do not condemn Jewish people for what illegal expansions occur in Palestine, but we do oppose the Israeli government. The reason why artists choose to comment on the conflict is none of our concern, we just appreciate that the struggles have not been forgotten.

I'll save you the trouble. Here are the numbers from USAID.
Since 1951, the US has provided Israel with $24,747,740,183 more in Economic Aid than to WestBank/Gaza and $127,807,623,867.00 more in Military Aid. Of course with the disclaimer that US Aid started to the Westbank in 1988.
In the period 2013-2016, the US provided $4,191,544,572.00 more in Economic Aid to WestBank/Gaza. And they provided Israel with $18,775,535,076 more in Military Aid during the same period. Total Aid was 447.94% higher to Israel and with the main emphasis on military aid.
So those are the facts, please use them as you will.

Banksy in Palestine ๐ต๐ธ, by daveart on Mar 21, 2017 14:10:29 GMT 1, interesting thread and congratulations to all who have participated without for the most part letting this degrade too far..
anyone ever see this article about the Plensa scupltures. Sculptures made with letters that form a human outline. Unfortunately in at least one sculpture the letters can form words - incredibly (to me) the artist representative stuck to the story that this was a complete random happening. We have a large Plensa sculpture in our town. I love it .. It is very hard to find words .. i find it hard to believe this was accidental but I suppose we will never really know the truth of it all.. I believe the city had the sculpture modified by the artist but i couldn't find any articles stating as much in the 30 seconds i looked. As much as i like to think artists are all about the common good it would be naive to think artists dont have social agendas just like everyone else in the world. to the OP .. i think there is plenty of art created in support of many causes - womens causes, save the planet, water, pets, you name it. i think you are a bit overly fixated on this cause but respect that you wanted to discuss it..
is this random ? you decide... just copying in the first few links i found.. i am sure there are more ..
i used a URL shortener.. just copy paste this into your browser.

There is no harm in assuming that it was an honest mistake, but at the same time, if multiple sculptures of his had the same phrases, then I would reconsider.

Banksy in Palestine ๐ต๐ธ, by Leo Boyd on Apr 15, 2017 21:25:13 GMT 1, There has always been - and will always be - persecution in the world, it's called 'natural selection' and has been going on since day dot, who wiped out neandrethals...... The homo-sapians? What about the Aztecs, the Egyptians, the Vikings, the Saxons or the Romans...... were they persecutors or persecuted?? The answer is that they were BOTH, as the more powerful will persecute the weak for their own interests and needs, it's not nice, it's evolution!! I am pretty sure that you have no idea what you are talking about and think you maybe confusing outdated ideas of social darwinism with actual darwinism

Banksy in Palestine ๐ต๐ธ, by robart on Nov 2, 2017 17:28:29 GMT 1, The recent anti Israel piece today in the news has me wondering will Banksy prices tank in the future as he upsets many of his buyers especially as in the art world many Jewish people are Banksy collectors. Although Banksy has a huge fan base when artists or musicians take strong stances politically people are often reluctant to part with the money as feel it goes against their values to support an artist with a strong position against what they stand for. Of course people who share the same view will like him more but think there will be a trade off.

I don't think so either, he would be more in trouble if he supported Israel: look at the recent Radiohead or Nick Cave controversy, just because they played a show in Israel. It is a bit beyond me why the world reacts that way as I think artists should be free to express themselves and bring their art anywhere regardless of political contexts. People are people.

Banksy (quoted yesterday) - โThis conflict has brought so much suffering to people on all sidesโ.
