Years ago on the now-defunct WallKandy forum, I started a thread for impressive or at least interesting cover versions of previously-released songs.
[It is a source of ongoing upset and irritation for me that the content of WallKandy disappeared. Besides the run-of-the-mill banter, countless well-considered and informed posts were also lost. The latter would have retained historical interest and value, and much of it would still be relevant to today's street art and graffiti scenes.]
This message board could perhaps use a cover-song thread as well.
It's worth bearing in mind the differences in age, cultural backgrounds and reference points among members. Consequently, for the benefit of anyone who may be unfamiliar with them, I recommend that contributions here also include videos featuring original versions of the relevant songs.

Anything by Nouvelle Vague is arguably cheating, but I'll throw this in regardless.
Rather than sacrilegious, I found the cover below surprisingly good. The running footsteps on gravel and Haitian voodoo rhythms are in my view truly inspired. Sung by Phoebe Killdeer.

Bauhaus - Bela Lugosi's Dead (1979)
The original version also brings to mind a nightclub scene with Catherine Deneuve and David Bowie.
As for the 12" record cover, Bauhaus enthusiasts will know it features the actor Ricardo Cortez and originates from the silent film The Sorrows of Satan (1926), directed by David W. Griffith.
