Successful Cover Songs, by mutatis on Dec 2, 2017 14:38:50 GMT 1, A cover which launched a career ... written by Prince for a band he put together ...
I don't like the cover and in my opinion the video "performance" helped sell the song. What is of interest is the (negative) effect the hit had on Prince's ego and his subsequent reclaiming of the song by introducing it into his live sets.

Successful Cover Songs, by eye like on Dec 2, 2017 15:11:31 GMT 1, Working Week, one of my favourite bands of the Acid Jazz era did a brilliant cover of Marvin Gaye on their debut album. It's damn hard to compete with any track from 'What's going on' but they did a fine job in my view.
And if you needed reminding here's the original...

Successful Cover Songs, by Warm Gun on Dec 2, 2017 15:25:06 GMT 1, Personally I much prefer Sinead O'Connor's version of that track. It's a stunning tribute that she has claimed as her own and superior in every way to the original. Her vocals are haunting and full of hurt, her passion is genuine, her pain is real. The track has better production qualities to it and I'd say the orchestration is better composed with a more tranquil undulating flow to it, It's heavenly. I find the tempo of the original a bit disjointed. I very much enjoy the video and am always captivated and transfixed by the emotion in her beautiful face, she is living the song and clearly has a strong connection to the lyrics (attributed by the death of her mother). It's a fantastically simple but powerful video made all the more impressive by that long unedited take, it's certainly a part of pop culture......the tear is genuine as well, I always find myself looking out for the exact moment it spills from her damp glistening eye onto her unblemished cheek.
I must admit that you have educated me today though Sir, I was aware that Prince wrote the track but did not know that he had done so for 'The Family'. I doff my cap to you.

Successful Cover Songs, by mutatis on Dec 13, 2017 1:28:19 GMT 1, Drawing on the earlier Smiths post above ... an extremely talented artist who in my view deserves a lot more acclaim - covers the Smiths; a move which could make grown men turn rabid before the chorus ... but this works for me.
The original
Back in the day this was (and still is) in my view a killer cover
The original
Before Madchester ... there was A Certain Ratio
The original ... classic break, sampled to death
