Successful Cover Songs, by met on May 7, 2018 15:02:54 GMT 1, Martina Topley-Bird feat. Mark Lanegan & Warpaint - Crystalised (The xx cover, 2013)
Topley-Bird being exceptional here, as usual. And a surprisingly remarkable voice from Ferrell, who looks like he's had a few rough years since I last saw him in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.

Successful Cover Songs, by met on May 7, 2018 16:19:39 GMT 1, Drawing on the earlier Smiths post above ... an extremely talented artist who in my view deserves a lot more acclaim - covers the Smiths; a move which could make grown men turn rabid before the chorus ... but this works for me. The original [...]
Cheers for posting.
I've since listened many times to this Ebony Bones version of What Difference Does It Make? (her own title without the question mark).
Everything about it is fantastic to my ears โ from the whistling and finger-snapping, to the down-tempo bass which kicks in one minute into the song.
Previously, I thought there was an artificial choir effect being used with Bones's voice. It's only today that I learned the New London Children's Choir is singing (and chattering at the start).
___________
By listening to the cover on YouTube, I also heard for the first time the song below โ through YouTube's creepy / disconcerting yet rather useful algorithm.
Proof that you're out of the loop is saying to yourself, "Hey, I've discovered a new band" โ only to find out the video was released six years ago and already has 30,000,000+ views.

Having discovered Major Lazer now, and from your comment I assume you like Get Free ... I would be curious to know what you think of Major Lazer's Guns Don't Kill People ... Lazers Do - their first album which is "raw" ... and in marked contrast to the sweet / commercial Get Free.
There's far too much music available these days to ever truly be in the loop ... recommendations and sharing of music go a long way ...

Successful Cover Songs, by mutatis on May 11, 2018 15:45:21 GMT 1, Continuing the Sisters theme .... they did their fair share of covers, most of which breathed new life into the subject matter and with covers like 1969, Ghost Rider, Sister Ray, Teachers, you were left in no doubt as to their influences ...
Emma, a live favourite from the early days and released later, at first seemed an odd cover, but the Sisters captured the darkness at the core of the song. Even though I'd heard the Hot Chocolate original many years before, I didn't really listen to the song until the Sisters performed it.
The Sisters would play this live occasionally (with a hint of irony?) - but I've opted for the Leather Nun's version.
I don't think this has already been posted but having ended up with Abba, it would be remiss not to include this stunning cover.

The Portishead cover of SOS is extraordinary. Never heard it before, so thank you for posting.
Regarding the video, I've always been a fan of simple, effective ideas that are well executed.
__________
EDIT:
A nod should also have been given by me to the International Morse code distress signal โ aurally at the beginning of the song, and with the flashing imagery in negative throughout the video.

In reverse order, I did listen to Guns Don't Kill People... Lazers Do by Major Lazer.
It's an eclectic album, which I dislike on the whole. As for the individual songs, I would describe them as ranging from annoying to unbearable.
Pretty much the only one I do like is the opening track, Hold the Line, featuring Mr. Lexx and Santigold. It required three or four listens, so there was an element of ear training involved.
[I spent a good half hour as well trying to figure out what was familiar about part of the guitar riff. My conclusion is that it may be a sample from Miserlou by Dick Dale and The Del-Tones.
Mr. Lexx's voice also pushed me to rediscover Tricky's album Blowback โ especially the songs featuring Hawkman / Garrison Hawk (such as Evolution Revolution Love and Over Me).]
______
Ebony Bones is much more my style, in song construction and spirit.
From what I've heard thus far, the memorable songs would be The Muzik (the video for which may cause some forum members to press 'pause' in a couple of places), and a great live performance of Neu World Blues on the WNYC programme, Soundcheck:

I say this with all due respect. Have a break. Go and have some fun. Say something like human beings talk, rather than f**kingSiri. Jesus. No more. A very fair comment, and no offence taken whatsoever.
The counter is that forums, by their nature, often attract obsessive individuals. This includes people who take great pleasure in details, reverse engineering, breaking things down โ working out the why, the how, the what if.
You say "Go and have some fun." Rest assured, I completely get where you're coming from.
But this is my idea of fun. Our notions of the concept are merely different.
And it's the fact that members here have such contrasting outlooks and priorities which, at least to my mind, makes this platform so potentially rewarding.
The last place I want to be is in some echo chamber, where everyone's views are similar to my own. That's where thinking stops, and where any hope of a proper exchange (and progress) vanishes.

Successful Cover Songs, by met on May 12, 2018 0:37:51 GMT 1, Having been introduced to The Cure through Faith and Pornography, I've generally found their song The Love Cats to be terrible (although not as atrocious as Friday I'm in Love).
It was therefore a pleasure to discover Tricky's cover, which I do enjoy.
Tricky (feat. Costanza Francavilla) - The Love Cats (2003)
Re-watching the video below, I may have worked out from whom Bjรถrk picked up her more irritating mannerisms.

Fair comment
Jesus Met. I lose the will to live whenever I see your posts. It's like everything said is analysed in a courtroom. I say this with all due respect. Have a break. Go and have some fun. Say something like human beings talk, rather than f**kingSiri. Jesus. No more. A very fair comment, and no offence taken whatsoever. The counter is that forums, by their nature, often attract obsessive individuals. For the sake of balance, there are few posts I enjoy more than yours met (your analysis of which seat a member had on a plane was a terrific read), and are one of the things that keep me reading this forum.

Funny you should mention the aeroplane analysis Coach, because that leapt to my mind this morning when reading this. Was going to search to see if I could find it again, worthy of another read.
