Bristol Museum • Paint Pot Angel Poster • WITHDRAWN , by moron on Jan 17, 2018 19:32:28 GMT 1, So someone posts about a poster of a garden center statue with a pot of paint on it's head. Definately not one of Banksys best efforts. Been done before in the teenage vandal realm, sort of look mum ain't i naughty i tipped a tin of paint on an old statue.
Then someone posts they are buying one, then all the little Banksy fishes swim over and the feeding frenzy begins.
Grabbing all they can as all they see is a few quid they can make by flipping anything Banksy.

Bristol Museum • Paint Pot Angel Poster • WITHDRAWN , by 11 on Jan 17, 2018 19:40:12 GMT 1, Image rights are very different to owning art - the rights are nearly always retained by the artist BM inadvertently thought they had express permission to reproduce the images but it was only ever so they include the work In their brochure
As soon as they realised their mistake BM did the right thing, why the hell would they piss off an artist that held An amazing show there and donated an Incredible work of art
Nobody screwed anyone over. It was an error on BM’s part and they have done all they can to rectify it - with the utmost integrity.
People are disappointed because they didn’t get what they thought was a bargain but did get there money back. Where’s the issue ?
Re. Photography; I think the term is incidental inclusion (nabbed from my mate Johnnyh) but a photo of a wall - sold or not is very different to reproducing an artists image for commercial gain.
Being fans of urban art doesn’t mean we don’t have to respect an artist and their trade.

Bristol Museum • Paint Pot Angel Poster • WITHDRAWN , by moron on Jan 17, 2018 20:07:35 GMT 1, The irony. Banksy goes round sticking his art inside museums without asking permission. His corporate side came out when he drew up the contract to have his show at Bristol museum. Lawyers and clauses and all that stuff. Keeping tight control of his copyright.
I don't think Bristol museum have done anything wrong. They probably thought they had permission to create an image of an exhibit they own. When it turns out the small print says they can only reproduce the image as part of a brochure. Personally I think museums should be allowed to reproduce any exhibit they own as a poster etc in order to raise funds for the museum.
This could be Banksy's prima donna celebrity side coming out or it could be Banksys management contradicting Banksys own phrase that "copyright is for losers"
It could also be that Banksy does not think this image of an angel statue with a pot of red paint tipped on its head is appropriate for his image today.
An angel is usually a christian or catholic symbol. A statue of an angel in stone is usually found in cemetaries.
Some vandal tipping a pot of paint on it's head is symbolic of someone who despises religion or statues as in the case of the taliban etc. The angel is feminine and with todays turn towards pro feminism in the media an image of a female angel with a tin can on her head does not come across as supporting women.
Regarding comparing what Bristol museum have done with what West Country Prince does. Is not logical.
The Bristol museum clearly had good intentions and the money from sales going to the museum. The museum certainly would not pull a stroke like making posters without permission if they knew that they did not have permission. WCP is a copyright thief, selling pirated images of Banksy art to line his own pockets.
Now it's funny that Banksy does not go after WCP with a desist notice from his management. Is it because of being seen as a hypocrit or is it because he, Banksy management does not want it to end up in court?

Definitely an age thing.

Bristol Museum • Paint Pot Angel Poster • WITHDRAWN , by Deleted on Jan 17, 2018 20:23:53 GMT 1, I reckon the difference between all the tossers like WCP and the others fakers is we all know they are not attributable to banksy or his 'firm'
The museum doing what they did with a piece of art that Banksy Donated, and calling it a print could have construed as Authorised banksy, I think some were already on sale on ebay for I am guessing over a fiver? So if the 'firm' allowed it to happen then Guys called Steve would be asking for COAs, Photocopied fakes would be flying around everywhere. There would be chaos and the universe would struggle to rebalance itself
And worse than that, ebay and paypal would have made more money off it than the museum

Bristol Museum • Paint Pot Angel Poster • WITHDRAWN , by Guy Denning on Jan 17, 2018 20:28:47 GMT 1, Wow, you seem pretty passive about this. I would be pissed. I understand copies being in a book or someone printing an image off the internet to hang on their own wall but someone plagiarizing your work to profit from, that's really low. I would at least let the hotel know that they are being played by a wannabe artist or more of a scam artist and demand that they remove the piece from their walls and take it off the wall and burn it. If they did not comply I would take action, legal or otherwise. If they'd signed it and tried to pass it off as my work I would be pissed off, but as it is it's just a copy. Lord knows I've copied other artists work when I was a kid. I can give you a list of artists as long as my arm who use other peoples' creative work and turn it out as their own. Sometimes modified, sometimes made in a different media, sometimes just a blatant copy. Where do you draw the line satifactorily? The only line I see is when the copyist attempts to sell it as an original work in the name of the original artist's hand. I was recently sent a picture of a piece by Shep Fairey of a high contrast portrait of a woman looking upwards, simulated as being printed on newsprint in dark brown colours. It was posted to me by an american lawyer who offered to take Shep to task over it legally on my behalf as he claimed the spirit and aesthetic style of my work was being ripped off (basically the twit thought he could make a killing because of Fairey's profile). Artists don't live in a void and sometimes the same, or similar, aesthetic concerns gain popular currency - it's not always 'copying' and 'forgery'... It's the same with this poster (I refuse to follow the BBC and call it a print as that, in my mind, is another thing altogether). The museum was doing what it does with all other work it has in its collection that has sufficient punter interest to warrant printing knick-knackery to raise funds. And our public museum spaces need that additional source of money. Regardless of the email sent out to people that ordered the poster I'm sure BANKSY would not pursue the museum over this legally. I think there's been a misinterpretation of the denial of authorisation. I might be wrong. I hope I'm wrong.

I can see the museum avoiding artists and shows at the museum in the future.
Maybe it's a valuable lesson when allowing the space to be used that an artist who turns up with lawyers before making the show is best avoided.

"People are under the impression that these are official Banksy releases..." Are they? Really? I saw the poster for sale and thought... Banksy poster for a fiver. I reckon that one day it'll be really as valuable as a Banksy poster for a fiver. I'd buy one if it didn't mean I'd have to take down my 70s Athena tennis player scratching arse poster (which is VERY collectable now - I felt it somewhere in my teenage undercrackers - I knew it was going to be worth something, somewhen...) Anybody that saw this for sale on the museum website at that price with that description and thought they were getting something that was on the same value scale as an editioned Banksy release needs their bumps felt. FFS

Is there a kittens forum? I can put you onto a fake kittens forum... Run by some bloke that used to work in the post room of the Bristol Museum but he was just laid off due to lack of work.

Bristol Museum • Paint Pot Angel Poster • WITHDRAWN , by Poly Mindset on Jan 17, 2018 20:53:42 GMT 1, Wow, you seem pretty passive about this. I think it's just as, if not more insulting that this guy Jordan signed it and tried to pass it off as his own work. However, it is up to you and whatever you choose is what you can live with. I'm sorry but I can't help to feel that I'm pissed for you. We here all know what a great artist you are and this kind ofs**t just gets under my skin. I literally hate people who are not genuine and those that possess not a single iota of integrity. f**kingposers.

That wouldn’t be the same forum for small pussies... I’ve checked.

I think I'm just grateful for the relatively fragrant existence I have as it is. I've lived long enough to know that there are more years behind me than ahead of me and I'm not going to waste those years left getting carved up over who's copying my work or not. And, to be honest, most of the artists I know of who do get really aggrieved about the superiority and particular originality of their own work - are usually the ones that have very little to shout about. It's not a club I want to be in.

At my age it's getting to the point where I'm lost between wondering where I left them, did I have them, can I even reach them and can I be bothered? I'll have a cup of tea I think.

Lol.... 1000 in a day, some hundreds if UAA buying multiple copies of the poster...
