Bristol Museum • Paint Pot Angel Poster • WITHDRAWN , by tab1 on Jan 18, 2018 2:20:27 GMT 1, If they'd signed it and tried to pass it off as my work I would be pissed off, but as it is it's just a copy. Lord knows I've copied other artists work when I was a kid. I can give you a list of artists as long as my arm who use other peoples' creative work and turn it out as their own. Sometimes modified, sometimes made in a different media, sometimes just a blatant copy. Where do you draw the line satifactorily? The only line I see is when the copyist attempts to sell it as an original work in the name of the original artist's hand. I was recently sent a picture of a piece by Shep Fairey of a high contrast portrait of a woman looking upwards, simulated as being printed on newsprint in dark brown colours. It was posted to me by an american lawyer who offered to take Shep to task over it legally on my behalf as he claimed the spirit and aesthetic style of my work was being ripped off (basically the twit thought he could make a killing because of Fairey's profile). Artists don't live in a void and sometimes the same, or similar, aesthetic concerns gain popular currency - it's not always 'copying' and 'forgery'... It's the same with this poster (I refuse to follow the BBC and call it a print as that, in my mind, is another thing altogether). The museum was doing what it does with all other work it has in its collection that has sufficient punter interest to warrant printing knick-knackery to raise funds. And our public museum spaces need that additional source of money. Regardless of the email sent out to people that ordered the poster I'm sure BANKSY would not pursue the museum over this legally. I think there's been a misinterpretation of the denial of authorisation. I might be wrong. I hope I'm wrong. I think it's just as, if not more insulting that this guy Jordan signed it and tried to pass it off as his own work. However, it is up to you and whatever you choose is what you can live with. I'm sorry but I can't help to feel that I'm pissed for you. We here all know what a great artist you are and this kind ofs**t just gets under my skin. I literally hate people who are not genuine and those that possess not a single iota of integrity. f**kingposers.
A lot of artists copy others , with the internet it is easier to catch people out.
Just think before the internet was formed just find a artist a few decades before copy their work and market to the youth of present and many would think its original

Bristol Museum • Paint Pot Angel Poster • WITHDRAWN , by Daniel Silk on Jan 18, 2018 5:06:38 GMT 1, Official reply from Bristol Museum that I have just received: "Hello, This was a mistake on our part. We own the art work in question and had been granted permission to produce the image in our Guide to the Art gallery published last Autumn. It was assumed that this would allow us to produce prints however, having contacted Banksy's management we were told that this was not the case. As a result we have taken the decision to withdraw all products of the Paint pot angel image from sale and offered full refunds to customers affected. We have apologised to Banksy and would like to offer our apologies to any customers who felt misled by this sale. Many thanks The retail team Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, Queens Road, Bristol BS8 1RL" Strange move by Banksy.

Bristol Museum • Paint Pot Angel Poster • WITHDRAWN , by itskento on Jan 18, 2018 5:17:38 GMT 1, "People are under the impression that these are official Banksy releases..." Are they? Really? I saw the poster for sale and thought... Banksy poster for a fiver. I reckon that one day it'll be really as valuable as a Banksy poster for a fiver. I'd buy one if it didn't mean I'd have to take down my 70s Athena tennis player scratching arse poster (which is VERY collectable now - I felt it somewhere in my teenage undercrackers - I knew it was going to be worth something, somewhen...) Anybody that saw this for sale on the museum website at that price with that description and thought they were getting something that was on the same value scale as an editioned Banksy release needs their bumps felt. FFS
Hey, would you look at that. Does that make me famous too?! Haha. You found my Instagram and some dbag cry baby trying to tell his story to anyone that had purchased one. He sent me a message first then made comments.

Bristol Museum • Paint Pot Angel Poster • WITHDRAWN , by team3d on Jan 18, 2018 9:38:23 GMT 1, Anyone know if they’re authorized? Figure they would be but doesn’t specify the sculpture it's owned by the museum, so it's authorized by museum. but the poster is not printed by banksy.
this is not a banksy poster, it's museum poster with a photo of a sculpture made & donated by banksy..
do museum needs artist permission to make any merchandise with donated art ? no, but, in this case, bristol didn't want to upset banksy so it's wise to refund than continue with the sale

Bristol Museum • Paint Pot Angel Poster • WITHDRAWN , by Hairbland on Jan 18, 2018 15:03:43 GMT 1, The irony. Banksy goes round sticking his art inside museums without asking permission. His corporate side came out when he drew up the contract to have his show at Bristol museum. Lawyers and clauses and all that stuff. Keeping tight control of his copyright. I don't think Bristol museum have done anything wrong. They probably thought they had permission to create an image of an exhibit they own. When it turns out the small print says they can only reproduce the image as part of a brochure. Personally I think museums should be allowed to reproduce any exhibit they own as a poster etc in order to raise funds for the museum. This could be Banksy's prima donna celebrity side coming out or it could be Banksys management contradicting Banksys own phrase that "copyright is for losers" It could also be that Banksy does not think this image of an angel statue with a pot of red paint tipped on its head is appropriate for his image today. An angel is usually a christian or catholic symbol. A statue of an angel in stone is usually found in cemetaries. Some vandal tipping a pot of paint on it's head is symbolic of someone who despises religion or statues as in the case of the taliban etc. The angel is feminine and with todays turn towards pro feminism in the media an image of a female angel with a tin can on her head does not come across as supporting women. Regarding comparing what Bristol museum have done with what West Country Prince does. Is not logical. The Bristol museum clearly had good intentions and the money from sales going to the museum. The museum certainly would not pull a stroke like making posters without permission if they knew that they did not have permission. WCP is a copyright thief, selling pirated images of Banksy art to line his own pockets. Now it's funny that Banksy does not go after WCP with a desist notice from his management. Is it because of being seen as a hypocrit or is it because he, Banksy management does not want it to end up in court? Really? Banksy' s prima donna celebrity side? A Junior College theory on angels and women? Actually all good, here in Brooklyn I like to start my day with a chuckle of two courtesy of a buffoon.
I do think another buffoon calling PC over a 5 quid poster is derserving of public shaming within the community. The posters have been resold for prices between $90-$350 for the most part, I'm guessing Banksy realized the opportunistic leeches were going to take advantage of the museum's naivety or lack of thought.

I can use my works photocopier to blow the image up to A3...I'll even go out and buy some nice card. Deal? Great.

Bristol Museum • Paint Pot Angel Poster • WITHDRAWN , by moron on Jan 18, 2018 17:16:38 GMT 1, A lot of artists copy others , with the internet it is easier to catch people out. Just think before the internet was formed just find a artist a few decades before copy their work and market to the youth of present and many would think its original www.stuckism.com/Hirst/StoleArt.htmlHow dare you! Hirst works sell for money money money! Aka he’s the best! If it’s not clear I’m being sarcastic :-) and in a nutshell that's what it all comes down to these days. Money.
in the words of Banksy.
Artist shows gratitude to Bridge Farm primary for naming house after him, but tells pupils ‘forgiveness is easier to get than permission’

Bristol Museum • Paint Pot Angel Poster • WITHDRAWN , by moron on Jan 18, 2018 17:25:24 GMT 1, I bought the bag with seagulls on it whilst you lot were buying this poster.
I heard from good authority that Banksy once saw a seagull in Bristol, so the bag is definately banksy memorabilia.

I wonder if Steve the Snitch harassed the museum like he did everyone else? Probably spooked them with his rants and they decided play it safe and cancel the orders. He's created all this bad press about both the museum and Banksy now... What an ***
