New Banksy in Hull, by Happy Shopper on Jan 27, 2018 11:55:50 GMT 1, Even at a basic level, taken at face value, it's a nice placement of a kid on what to a kid looks like a castle Draw Bridge, and getting the words wrong! Then there's the graffiti level. Simply "Draw on the raised bridge". Then there's the Brexit "joke".
I'm not sure how much of that was intended, but it's good!
Obviously you wouldn't want it as a print on a wall, but a great outdoor piece.

New Banksy in Hull, by iamzero on Jan 27, 2018 12:07:30 GMT 1, I have it on good authority that the drawbridge and red pencil represent the artists growing anger at the insane price rise in art materials from local suppliers forcing a new generation to use only chalk based mediums. The colander helmet signifies the holes left unrepaired in the roads around the north that John Lennon once sung about, mainly in Blackburn Lancashire... but it’s not that far from Hull. The wooden sword is Banksy pointing out that the perceived threat he has become to galleries and the world of fine art isn’t real, it’s as false as the weapon he holds and the fact the boy is sitting on a graffiti piece shows that Banksy’s whole world is propped up by the history of street art and if this is removed then the prices of Banksy artwork will tumble leaving investors with egg on their faces. That's interesting, thanks for the description. How would the history of street art be removed, thereby leaving investors eggy?
The graffiti piece the boy is sat on could be seen as bubble style in graffiti circles. The boy is waving a sword that could easily puncture the lettering therefore Banksy bursting his own bubble taking the art investors wankers market with it.

New Banksy in Hull, by rikkirattoe on Jan 27, 2018 12:37:06 GMT 1, I always like the ‘educated’ ideas of the interpretation of what where and why Banksy paints... could it be Hull just happens to have a bridge of this type and the red coloured pencil stands out best.
Isn't that the fun in art? Let your mind run wild 😁

Does pointing out the obvious, that this is a statement about Brexit, mean you are 'educated' these days? The bar is getting lower and lower, and not just on this forum.
Why is it obvious that it’s about Brexit?

New Banksy in Hull, by Hubble Bubble on Jan 27, 2018 13:46:50 GMT 1, I think you're underestimating banksy if you think it's just a pretty picture with some play on words, and Hull chosen at random.
So why Hull if it's politically motivated?

Maybe he's saying -
"You were a U.K. City of culture yet you voted overwhelmingly for Brexit. Now you're isolated, see what it does for your cultural opportunities"
Possibly.
Maybe.
You can reverse a car into most parking spaces and it'll appear like it was designed to be there.

New Banksy in Hull, by detail on Jan 27, 2018 14:03:07 GMT 1, Does pointing out the obvious, that this is a statement about Brexit, mean you are 'educated' these days? The bar is getting lower and lower, and not just on this forum. Why is it obvious that it’s about Brexit? ''Obvious' was probably not the best word to go with so I will rephrase the question. Why does stating that you think this is about Brexit, and giving basic reasons why you think that, mean you are claiming to be 'educated'? Also, why do people see being 'educated' as a negative thing these days, so much so that its used as an insult?
Personally, I think this is about Brexit, but if you think that the image and placement mean something else, or nothing at all, that is up to you. Everyone has thier own opinion, and if someone states their opinion it doesn't mean that they are claiming to be 'educated' or an art expert.

Hull has been in the news a lot with regards to Brexit over the last year or so, mainly debating wether it was a good idea for a city that relies so heavily on European investment (Siemens) and trade (its a port that trades with Europe mainly) to vote to leave the EU.

New Banksy in Hull, by dogma on Jan 27, 2018 14:33:10 GMT 1, Hi, first post by the way, apologies for jumping in, but I’ve just been to see this in Hull and came up with my own conclusion
Does the piece not represent the soon to be Winter Olympics in Korea where North and South will stand side by side in the opening ceremony? The lowering of the bridge, the boarder between conflicting nations?
Looking at the depicted figure, dress, style etc.... this is what I think anyways

Are you trying to say some people look for meaning/design after an event where there is none? If so probably not the best analogy.
I would agree people do that a lot, look for meaning where this isn't any, especially with art, but some art does have intentional meaning and personally I think the new Banksy in Hull does.

‘What a nice unserious image’ ‘great break from the political stuff’ ‘just silly and fun’
Turns to
‘An incredible work discussing the biggest political news in recent times’ ‘so complex and serious’ ‘ striking and influential’
So which is it?

i think the boy is wearing a pasta strainer on his head with a smile to represent the joy one feels after eating a delicious bowl of spaghetti. the pencil on the sword is a tribute to the what the old school italians would use to write down their recipes/showing you cooking is powerful. the writing in chalk symbolizes the taste of overcooked gnocchi, dry and grainy. notice the shoes the boy is wearing? they represent italy because italy is shaped like a boot. the boy is sitting on giant letters because letters can be used to spell ‘PASTA’.
