Bhutanese Government Removes Invader’s Work Fr, by sakyamuni on Feb 8, 2018 14:59:36 GMT 1, From Artnet news:
The French street artist Invader sparked outrage in recent weeks for plastering nearly a dozen of his mosaics, created in the style of pixelated vintage video games, onto historical Buddhist sites in Bhutan. While a number of observers, including many of Invader’s own followers on Instagram, found the action disrespectful, the artist told artnet News that he had permission from the “chief” monk to install at least one of the works, a mandala mosaic in Cheri Goemba—the oldest monastery in Bhutan.
Nevertheless, officials from the government’s cultural properties division have now taken down Invader’s works, which included a levitating monk, a dragon, and a target, according to Bhutan’s Kuensel newspaper. The monastery “is one of the most significant monasteries in the country,” Kuensel reports, and is currently undergoing renovations.
“It’s premature to say anything about the issue at this point,” home minister Dawa Gyaltshen told the paper. She said that the government was still investigating exactly how the street artist came to install the works at the sacred sites.
Neither Invader nor government officials returned requests for comment on the works’ removal.
The government’s decisive move was praised by a number of Bhutanese residents, including Instagram user @yoezer29 who posted the paper’s story to his Instagram Story account and wrote “Finally! Thank goodness. #invadershouldnotbehere.”
Other fans, however, are disappointed at the removal of the works. “We were worried that people might steal the installations to sell them, but for it to be vandalized like this is so saddening but also embarrassing for us as a nation,” wrote the photographer Pawo Choyning Dorji on Instagram.
Invader defended himself against critics on January 30, when he penned his own Instagram message: “I know that some people will scream that it is disrespectful to have practiced my art in Bhutan. Personally I don’t think so! My practice tells a story, and I don’t know why I should deprive Bhutan from this story. I’m proud to have left my trace in that wonderful country.”

Bhutanese Government Removes Invader’s Work Fr, by timmundo on Feb 10, 2018 5:36:11 GMT 1, As a follower of Invader on Instagram, I continued to question what was going on with his recent trip. At first it felt like a quick hit in a village he was visiting, made his intentions known, helped the locals, tagged a place or two with consent... kinda cool.
Then it seemed to be an obnoxious tag-fest. lots of camera angles with "hey, look at the hut, and when I pan the camera, I tagged the wall next to their laundry". then it became camera's taking pics of work next to village symbolic structures. once again, a beauty of a camera pan from mountain to 2,000 year old wall with space invader pixels.
Left a really bad taste in my mind. To be honest, I think it's fucked up, classless and disrespectful.
Edit: 7 beers deep.

Also didn’t think it was disrespectful if he sort the blessing of the monks. It looked like he had a nice holiday & did his thing at the same time. I feel for him if this has been received in a negative way. Just my take on things

Bhutanese Government Removes Invader’s Work Fr, by cmartin on Feb 11, 2018 7:44:42 GMT 1, I find it funny that this is an “urban art” forum and people are upset about this. How many street pieces do we applaud that were done without the building owners permission? Where do we draw the imaginary line? And who draws it? If Banksy were to tag a Catholic Church with toxic Mary would you praise him or criticize him?

This just sounds incredibly arrogant. Maybe he didn't mean it to sound like that, but my god does that make him sound like a p*ick.

Ok, he is french, i am french too, english isn't our native language, we are trying to express ourselves as best as we can but lack or wrong vocabulary could lead to misunderstanging. I've seen it many times.
About this specific quote, i read "I've invaded many countries, Bhuthan is not on the list, there is no particular reason to skip Bhuthan, let's invade". It could be "skip" or "pass on" or "deprive", etc...
Try to be comprehensive and not too picky on the terms, keep in mind that this is not our native language.

Have done fuck all themselves as in what exactly?
Do you mean have not resorted to plagiarism like Invader has with his copying the Atari Invader caracters and design plus calling himself Space Invader and marketing the so called art as his originals?
Anyone can make those small mosaic tiles and mosaics using the same tiles done on buildings and bathrooms long before Invader did.
So basically nothing to stop other people making Invader caracters from tiles and slapping them on buildings too plus calling themselves something similar to Space Invader.
How many Invader prints have you invested your money in?
That's all it comes down to in reality, keeping the good PR going for invader to make sure some stupid stunt doesn't turn buyers off him.
Invader is all about the invasion, his so called global invasion. The rules of Space Invaders, the original game is that the invader caracters have to be obliterated in order to win the game. The more obliterated the better. So in reality, Invader puts them up on buildings without permission and to play the game properly , people should go round removing them and obliterating them. Whoever removes the most Invaders off the streets wins the game.
Regarding the Bhutanese government and the monks and peoples objection to Invaders tiled efforts put up without permission. It's their country and their heritage and culture they are preserving not pandering to some idiot publicity seeker promoting his stunt as advertising to sell his prints.

Bhutanese Government Removes Invader’s Work Fr, by moron on Feb 15, 2018 18:55:30 GMT 1, let me undertand.... the walled off hotel in front of a wall that means pain and death , and lot of people going there just to see banksy art and eat humus and buying souvenir is ok and a a f***ing mosaic in bhutan is suddenly disrespectful ? cmonnnnnnnnnn that is art! shouldn't art means to be less hypocritical??? btw ... been to WOH twice and huge fan of both SI and mr B Art and artists are some of the biggest hypocrits. With their preaching and messages of love and environmental concerns etc etc.
Banksy and others have permission from the Palestinian locals in Bethlehem. It helps publicise their (palestinians) situation. I don't see visitors doing stencils and graffiti on any temples, mosques or churches in Bethlehem, only on the dividing wall.
Invader had no permission and the environment he chose to slap his crap came across as insulting to the locals.
me me me , it's all about me me me for these plagiarists
