Both. Banksy has gotten some media coverage, but not really lately.
It's a tiny niche of a tiny niche.
The most recognizable contemporary work would probably be Fairey's Obama.
When I talk art at work or social events in NJ, the focus is usually on older things. For example, the MET's recent 'Michaelangelo' exhibition was probably the most attended by people I know. It did over 800k visitors overall, making it one of the top-5 exhibitions, all-time, at the MET. Picasso exhibitions draw people. As do Monet(if friends visit MoMA, they always comment about the huge Waterlillies painting)
Murakami isn't known by name, only by his multi-color LV bags.

I'm really not shitting on Banksy here this is simply a reality. People will for sure remember him. But maybe more as a business model for cop and flip marketing in business text books than in Art books.

Not sure why that makes him a phony though. Highlighting major political/world issues, largely using the money generated by his own art and projects, isn't the work of one man alone.

No artists alive or dead whose popularity has existed for decades just because people connected with their work rather than it being a PR exercise?

I don't think anyone is proclaiming banksy to be the new messiah, though he is a bit of a naughty boy.
But a lot of us do like him, have liked him for 10 + years. i don't know what he does to piss people off?
I used to get the grafitti tagger type dudes calling him names, art fag I think was one?
and i get people calling him a vandal for drawing on walls
if he retired tomorrow and just wrapped it up and called it a day, and lets say for whatever reason all his art value dropped to zero, i'd still have enjoyed what he has done and given.
i haven't got that from any other artist
