Todd James - whats the deal?, by biglebowski on May 1, 2018 10:32:22 GMT 1, I am a big fan of Todd's work, and it seems that he is pretty well known in the art scene and is a friend of KAWS and other big artists, but he is sort of low key...he doesn't have many big hyped print releases, and seems to produce less work than other artists, and doesn't get much love compared with other artists who's work isn't as good in my opinion e.g. D Face, POSE etc. What's everyone's view on Todd? Love him? Hate him? Own some of his work? LETS CONVERSE!

Todd James - whats the deal?, by Briggs 74 on May 1, 2018 10:51:18 GMT 1, follow him on instagram - he's way more prolific than you think. He may not produce that many prints, but works from his last show were going for many tens of thousands of dollars. He not only makes art but also is involved in lots of fantasy comic stuff

Todd James - whats the deal?, by Happy Shopper on May 1, 2018 10:53:12 GMT 1, His recent print from v1 gallery sold out pretty quick (small edition size), and he's had 2 or 3 shows over the last year. Not sure how much sells, but his prices have gone up and up. (Wish I'd bought an original from his Lazarides show a few years ago!)
I'm surprised his prints with Lazarides are still available actually... but maybe they found a few extra copies and put them back online recently!??

Todd James - whats the deal?, by biglebowski on May 1, 2018 11:00:07 GMT 1, Yup they must have found some old works...very much torn between buying the 'come sail away' print or waiting for a naughty librarian which is my favorite print of his! Either way my wall is crying out for one of his works, love the vibrant colours

Todd James - whats the deal?, by Pavoni on May 1, 2018 11:01:41 GMT 1, I really like his work. Also worked under the name REAS.
Maybe not much on here, but his Instagram has almost 62,000 followers. Make of that what you will.
Couldn't afford the V1 paintings, but like his screenprints as they look so much like the originals.
Great use of color and dark, sly humor. I have 3 prints: The POW Somali pirates, the Laz print referenced above and the recent V1 Librarian. All 3 look good, like to hang them all together.
This Jets just ended on Paddle8. Was only up to about $700 near the end of auction. As with all P8 auctions, never know final price. The description says gouache and graphite, which implies a handmade original, but also 10 of 40 (WTF?) so a bit unclear.

Todd James - whats the deal?, by biglebowski on May 1, 2018 11:11:05 GMT 1, I am currently in contact with V1 as they are trying to find me an AP of the naughty librarian or any prints that got held back! Your Todd collection sounds great, I would love to see some photos of the works on the wall if you wanted to share!
The naughty librarian is undoubtedly my favourite of his print releases...not sure what that says about me :'D

Todd James - whats the deal?, by Pavoni on May 1, 2018 11:12:49 GMT 1, Avid reader...? (> _ <)
Naughty Librarian is good. The POW is also really cool. Love the Pirates. Don't like the cheesy textured paper they printed it on though...like burlap. Unnecessary decorative touch to a pure image.
LAZ print has nice colors and nice quality ink on smooth paper. Looks good. Didn't like the composition at first, felt a bit thin, but it's growing on me.
I think his print prices really reasonable.

Todd James - whats the deal?, by puritog on May 1, 2018 14:56:04 GMT 1, Todd James is one of my favourites, he has a big fan base and I think the wealthier collectors have a couple of Todd James originals in their houses. But I also tend to think along the lines of biglebowski's first post in the thread and don't think he has found the same hype as other artists.
For example Naughty Librarian was an edition of 35 and took 2 days to sell out. That's a rather bad result if you compare it to Parra who sold 250 sliding doors in a couple of hours (I consider this Parra's worst print ever). The Lazarides prints have been on sale for YEARS, they were never taken down. Also if you look at the resell market people are lucky if they can sell their Todd James stuff at cost.
However I have seen him once and have heard stories about him. My impression is he likes it the way it is and is not looking for more attention.
In case you are interested, there are also a couple of rarer Todd James books here since recently: muddguts.bigcartel.com/.

Todd James - whats the deal?, by biglebowski on May 1, 2018 16:15:05 GMT 1, Thats a pretty good summary of what I have found out about him. I do find it odd, he is definetly as talented as Parra, D Face, POSE, and other artists of that ilk, yet like you say, his prints never really sell like hotcakes. I guess he is happy with his status and following and more power to him! I personally love his work and will be adding a print to my wall soon.
Interesting to note that the LAZ prints have been sitting there for a while, I assumed they found some unsold and relisted!

Todd James - whats the deal?, by phototrak on May 4, 2018 12:27:22 GMT 1, He is a major part of the "Dean Collection", which is Swizz Beats and Alicia Keys.
People in the know collect him. He had a show at a gallery in Australia a Long time ago (think 12 or so years) and Laz (yep from Lazarides) was buying pieces cause the exchange rate made the works super affordable.

If you have any time could you share a picture of the come sail away print you own...really surprised its popped up on LAZ, I wonder how many they found Hey there. Looks like the only photos I took of the LAZ print were through the glassine. It's flattening in a folder. The POW print also flat in a folder, but somehow took more pics with glassine off.
If you don't have a Todd James print Come Sail Away would be a great place to start. (But hey, that's just like, my opinion, man.) The inks and paper are nice, quality. Get it direct from source at LAZ, see still available for 365 GBP.

Todd James - whats the deal?, by Happy Shopper on May 4, 2018 13:54:25 GMT 1, His work at primary is really expensive I think that's why there's less "buzz". He sells originals at the top price he can, there's little for room flipping, but people that like him still buy them.
I did a quick #toddjames search on instagram yesterday, and his pieces are in some amazing collections.
