Damien Hirst H4 • Veils, by blerd on Aug 9, 2018 9:12:28 GMT 1, I can't help feeling that we have all been played perfectly by Hirst, Serpentine, Tate etc. H4 an edition of 600 is released to moderate hype and sells out. H5 an edition of 800 gets released a week later to considerable more hype, with talk of sleeping bags and sarnies. At this rate H6 will need the Riot squad! Very clever guy that Hirst. ;-)

And for the flippers, they get to 6x their investment to the folks that rather not venture out to the Tate

Also you don't have to be there to register. As we saw with H4 it isn't always first come first served. If this was the the case why not just queue up and pay.

Because of the Tate membership element I think onsite applications will be 'processed' first, but yes I agree the prints that don't sell out would be more than likely offered to those who are on the email list for an application

Hirst is a factory he won't stop. This is great for people that actually hang work, but not ideal for the flippers. Reading between the lines on this thread I get the feeling that quite a few people won't be hanging these. Again IMO.

Yeah be interesting to see Q4 / Q1 auctions where these pop up and at what price, I don't see them being flipped on this forum. I assume though that if you flip and change the name with Heni, you're blackballed for the next release? Risky to say the least.

When it comes to crunch time though (i.e. when they actually have to pay), and they're not surrounded by their friends drinking champagne....a lot less will buy.
Doesn't mean it will not sell out though.

"Please note, we are anticipating a large attendance for the event and would like to make you aware that there will be a queuing system in place to allow everyone the chance to register their interest in a Hirst edition. We will be handing out the forms to be filled out before entry."Perhaps I'm missing something here but it strikes me as slightly odd filling in the form before you get in to see the actual prints in the flesh. Whys that odd? We're asked to buy based on pdf all the time But if you are going to the event, I presumed you would want to see them and then make your decision. If not, you can fill the form in online.

It is possible to create a frenzy and hype and "people that don't much about the art market" as you say being left holding the baby.
A lot of flippers were not pleased that H5 another 800 Hirsts were released a week after H4. It definitely devalued H4 and I own one. ;-)

Damien Hirst H4 • Veils, by Deleted on Aug 9, 2018 11:43:53 GMT 1, Did any Tate member figure out the exact protocol for the print launch? At what time is the private reception? 7pm or is that the time for the general public? Is the queuing for members too? (I’d assume so since almost every other Londoner is a member...) I'm a Tate member. I have been told 7pm to 9pm. By the way, there is no "general public" time. It's Heni invites and Tate members only. There was no RSVP for Tate members; we are told to just turn up on the door.

A large percentage didn’t get paid for. Buyers were offered unheard of credit terms and payment plans. The end result might be slightly different to the Coup d etat the media portrays.
Selling in that manner was a bold move. Allthough he’s back with Gagosian now and releasing non tiered prints via a Heni after closing his own publishing company? Slightly strange state of affairs to my mind allthough I’m sure he has a strategy.

Damien Hirst H4 • Veils, by njr911 on Aug 9, 2018 12:16:06 GMT 1, The 2008 Sotherbys sale is legendary, many got burned for millions. H4 and H5 arn't exactly a high risk buy at £3k tops. Not many Hirst prints sell for much less than £3k even in the worst auctions A large percentage didn’t get paid for. You can bet Larry has a plan, that kid doesn't play!

Care to elaborate, wise ol' Posterbob..? You don't know much about the art market.

With H5 released so close to H4...and an edition of 800...the market has been flooded somewhat....Now here's my opinion: due to this, these may not sell with as much of a profit as previous Hirst releases if that's your intention - hence being burnt if you think these will bring (a lot of) easy money.

Damien Hirst H4 • Veils, by Dibbs 45 on Aug 9, 2018 12:49:36 GMT 1, I saw these at the serpentine and I wasn’t impressed to be honest. A big glossy high def photograph of an original painting. Not a popular opinion but I think it would have translated better to paper.
However the originals must be amazing and I can understand why he would authorise a reproduction. Once the OGS are gone then there’s no where left to see them. More a reminder of something great than something great with these.
