New Banksy in Paris???, by redliquorice on Jun 26, 2018 19:38:42 GMT 1, Why is it a shame? Not everyone will like or appreciate the fact that a mainly middle class art collector/speculator who's only interest to visit a run-down/no go area is to look at art on the wall, while at the same time ignoring the real issue around them. Whilst I completely agree with your sentiment, at least it gets the middle class art collector/speculator into the run-down/no go area and see for himself how these people are living and experience a little bit of their plight at first hand rather than reading someone else's version of it in a newspaper. And perhaps, hopefully a little seed of compassion or sympathy might germinate I know I'm an optimist.
I’ve worked in that area. There are 400 refugees there at breakfast and in the evening. Police presence is aggressive. No middle-class anyone would have gone even if they made it to the metro station. The placement is as deliberately unapproachable as it’s possible to have chosen - unless of course he was covering up the swastika and so had no choice. It’s raised awareness by its placement but these people don’t need poverty tourists shuffling past them to see some graffiti. They are in a desperate situation. I think the piece has gone its job and the refugees will be left to take advantage of the services offered here without gawkers.

New Banksy in Paris???, by disappointed on Jun 26, 2018 19:58:05 GMT 1, It could explain this really great stencil ! Similar as these ones ... ( Hull ? i still did not understood the context )! I don't know if anyone responded to your question about the Hull piece as I stopped reading this thread as reading some of the more bizarre speculations was too tiring.
Anyway, 'Draw The Raised Bridge' is just a reworking of the phrase/term 'Raise The Draw Bridge'. In this case the kid is playing at/imitating raising the bridge by drawing on it (it's painted on the road surface of a non-operational, vertical, drawbridge). I'm sure we can read a little deeper and maybe suggest that it is some commentary on how many nations are closing their borders/shutting their doors/and raising their metaphorical draw bridges as we slip into nationalism, insularity, and paranoia. Or maybe he just likes a cheap pun?

How many are refugees and how many are economic migrants?
How many of these people have actually registered themselves with any authority and have applied for asylum in France?
Asylum seekers have to register in the first safe country they enter.
These people are "in a desperate situation". Why is that? Why have they come to Paris?
What do they want and what is the end game?
I do agree that it is irresponsible of the French government to allow these people to sleep in the street and should provide a place for them to sleep. Plus the French government should process these people by interviewing each one and issuing some form of permit and identity card for each one which includes taking their fingerprints.
Leaving them in limbo in the street is no good for anyone.
Are these NGO and migrant so called "non profit" ships making money directly or indirectly from providing a free boat service from the shores of Libya and Africa to European shores?

Even OFII who are responsible for looking after asylum seekers acknowledge that of the 3000 picked up in the most recent evacuations a significant percentage a) have papers or b) have been kicked out of their accommodation for minor infringements of what are often draconian rules. E.g. you can be kicked out if you let a homeless friend spend the night, you miss the curfew etc etc. But this isn’t a political board. My point was about Banksy doing work to highlight the refugee crisis, whether it should be preserved and commoditised or if it had done it’s job and so no longer needs to exist.

New Banksy in Paris???, by whyseepee on Jun 26, 2018 22:46:23 GMT 1, Interesting analysis. There is clearly something going on with the rats moving, but at the same time there is incentive to steal rats if your ethics are low. from my perspective this excavation job looks way too clean or neat to assume a thief would have done it. If so, why the 2nd version has not be taken during the night then ? I saw it earlier this morning.

Is the rat with a Stanley knife done with a stencil or freehand? From Banksy's comment I assume the the knife is referencing stenciling rather than crime?

New Banksy in Paris???, by lee3 on Jun 27, 2018 6:28:04 GMT 1, They might be by banksy but in reality they are not very good, there again they are quick stencils sprayed clandestinely without permission on walls. The rats are sort of banksy branding, the guy feeding the dog it's own leg bone, in my opinion the result of a sick mind and no one has said what it actually means. I don't believe any artist in any medium is supposed to tell you what their art means. That's part of the fun, forming your own opinion and deciding for yourself. I like art that makes me think and in the man/dog piece i happen to see commentary on our exacerbating wealth divide. The man representing the wealthy instead of being nice to those less fortunate, is sawing of their leg (the poor dog in this case) and making them beg in return for their own bone. It is sick as you noted, dark and twisted too but an ugly reality growing worse while lacking empathy. I love that piece and I could be completely wrong regarding the intentions of the artist but that's part of the fun, no?
As for the branding statement, I'm simply not as cynical as some of the folks that post here now. I happen to see pure intentions from this artist, same as it ever was really. It's more enjoyable that way.

P.S. what did you all buy this week

New Banksy in Paris???, by shy on Jun 28, 2018 10:41:41 GMT 1, What about the building owners? Are they sleeping? These Banksy's add tremendous value to their buildings. These owners should protect their banksys.
It's like they've won a lottery ticket, but the dummies don't seem to do anything?
If my building just went up 500k plus cuz of an original Banksy you can bet I would be jumping for joy and get off my butt to protect the artwork

The rats are sort of banksy branding, the guy feeding the dog it's own leg bone, in my opinion the result of a sick mind and no one has said what it actually means. Napoleon in a burka, is how many will see that one and that old chestnut being dragged up about a country's past history means nothing as to what is happening today. The black girl and the swastika a blatant attack on the French being nazis and accusing the French of racism. There again I guess it's just banksy being a provocateur. I'm sure that if the migrants from africa who are in Paris were migrants from say eastern Ukraine where there is a civil war who decided to flee to France etc for economic reasons that there would be hardly any symptahy from the antifa no borders mob. The French have a long deep history of anti-Semitism that continues to run rampant today.
They might be by banksy but in reality they are not very good, there again they are quick stencils sprayed clandestinely without permission on walls. New Banksy in Paris???, by J0NNY on Jun 28, 2018 11:46:48 GMT 1, i simply do not understand why some stupid people would even consider defacing or covering up a Banksy painting? Or any artworks of graffiti/street-artists. Respect
Isn’t it a given though that as soon as you have finished painting, it’s fair game for anyone to paint over? I mean it’s not like they own the wall they choose to deface?

New Banksy in Paris???, by shy on Jun 28, 2018 11:50:54 GMT 1, Hi Johnny- very true...but man-It's a frickin Banksy original!!!
Any morons would know "Don't Touch!"
IMO it's very selfish to wheat paste over or graffiti spray on any original Banksy.
It's like spitting in the face of your school master!
