a strange thing happened on the way to check over a print. , by rebate on Jul 4, 2018 23:08:59 GMT 1, Tripped off to london today to check over a print with someone. Lawrence Aitken Gallery, diva print.
Got there and had a look at the "mint print". it had clear dents on the top edge so i mentioned it, prospective buyer asked what i thought, so i replied "not my call, but i wouldnt". Gallery dude steamed at me accross the room got up in face face and shouts "did you say it was crap" with a whole pile of threatening attitude.
He then proceeded to deny anything was wrong with it saying it hasnt been framed. After being made to accept it was damaged, he stated "its not from framing, its where weve had this book on it", at that point i gave up.
But having wondered do i bother to post, i decided screw it, yes.
Bottom line, dont trust their gradings, and watch your bloody back in there, they are a bit friggin lose.

One of the more bizarre out of the blue confrontations ive had! outside of being punched out of nowhere!
Was with a forumite who wanted to buy the print. Think he was a little gobsmacked at their responses to say the least!
Another rather odd experience courtesy of the art world!

a strange thing happened on the way to check over a print. , by shy on Jul 5, 2018 2:21:12 GMT 1, Thanks for posting. It's always great to see any print or original for that matter in person. But sometimes it's difficult if it's out of town. I recently purchase a very expensive original painting. The pics that were sent to me were pristine but when I opened the crate the painting had some flaws Nothing I could do. So Buyer beware.

Perhaps you should speak to management? ... sorry to read that you had such a horrible experience.

a strange thing happened on the way to check over a print. , by shy on Jul 5, 2018 2:30:27 GMT 1, Another issue happened to me. I had purchased an expensive print from a high end gallery. They shipped it to me Internationally. When I opened the package, the print was damaged- creased in shipping. But this gallery was very reputable and they sent me a replacement print immediately (and packed much better this time) at no extra cost.
And I returned the damaged print to them, which they accepted with no problem... so I guess it depends who you deal with.
Also please ALWAYS make sure to open your shipments immediately- the way you know if there's damage immediately- cuz if you wait a few weeks or months then you could have a problem...
Always better to open the shipping box in front of a reputable framer- or let him open it for you- also take pics if the box is damaged before opening.
It's wonderful to finally get an anticipated art work... it's a horrible feeling when the piece ends up damaged after you open the crate/box/container.

a strange thing happened on the way to check over a print. , by Dahmer on Jul 5, 2018 8:44:31 GMT 1, Have to say this is a little surprising, have been attending the private views at LA for a couple of years now and speak to the management pretty much everytime im in there and they are always really sound, everyone really. Don't have a lot of experience as such buying from them, ive bought one print, a recent nick smith print which i actually picked up from the gallery and i watched Sam roll it in craft paper, roll it up nicely etc etc, was pretty happy with the service from start to finish, from my initial email, the phone calls of paying and picking it up.
Always found everyone involved with the gallery to be very pleasant.

a strange thing happened on the way to check over a print. , by Pawel on Jul 5, 2018 8:59:27 GMT 1, Yeah, the last Nick Smith print. I thought I had secured that print. Agreed to pay by the end of the week. I missed a call from the gallery on Friday (I was literally paying for it) and 5 minutes later got an email that they sold my copy to someone else and they are sold out.
Lesson learnt I guess

a strange thing happened on the way to check over a print. , by JJN on Jul 5, 2018 9:12:14 GMT 1, I bought a Nick Walker Print from ArtNet for about 1000 GBP but sent to old address when I opened it a few months later was totally different print. Thye refused to refund me and informed me they could no longer contact the Seller after much bitching they agreed to refund me their premium but still i was stuck with wrong print. So always check print ASAP.

Always found everyone involved with the gallery to be very pleasant. lol i bet it is, you should have been there yesterday!
Thing is though, i went to look over a print, and nearly ended up at full physical violence because someone had lied about the condition, then because i pointed it out, he got hump. Then because he misheard what i said to the buyer, steamed accross the room ready to attack me. It did become a somewhat longer confrontation (i dont like people getting in my face at all!), but i just highlighted the start point as that was enough. I would guess that most people will have had an OK experience with them, and would be amazed if many had experienced this, but this was appalling, and to be fair, was almost a case of having to fight some idiot because he lost the plot altogether. Im not easy phased, but someone else might have felt very different after that experience, so im just trying to see that people understand its possible for this to happen.
If i ignored it, and someone got hurt, that i would regret, posting about it, not so much. It was just too weird!

Plus under EU law you have an automatic right to a refund for any reason for goods bought mail order. You have to cover shipping. Only applied for 14 days, but it is quibble proof

a strange thing happened on the way to check over a print. , by Andy'77 on Jul 5, 2018 20:20:53 GMT 1, I once purchased a Lichtenstein Whaam print from a reputable gallery in San Francisco about 7 years ago. The print was sold as being from the limited edition of 3000 from 1988 published by the Tate on heavy stock paper. Paid about $1k and $400 to have it shipped over to the UK. Arrived well packaged and shipped flat but when I opened it, it was one of the open edition posters that are currently available from the Tate for ยฃ20. I managed to sort it out with them after a bit of discussion (me pointing out the dimensions were totally different), stupidly they paid to have it shipped back to them in the same manner, must have cost them another $400 for shipping a cheap open edition poster. My trust in galleries certainly dropped at that point.

The lesson in all of this for me at the moment is becoming "if your going to see an art professional about some art, be sure to either know what you are doing, or take someone that does".
That american dude said a gold mine is a hole in the ground with a liar in the bottom. Im starting to think an art professional is the same liar with some pictures to sell! At the moment they are a joke at best, i know there are good people out there in galleries, but there are so many shit ones now its getting to be pointless giving them the time of day! I really do get why the young n hip lot are doing it all online and direct these days!

At least hey are trying to get you your print and not going straight to refund though. I hate that more!
